What are your Japanese study tips!? Let me know down below!! I tried to keep mine a bit more general so they can apply to everyone, but maybe in the future I will make more ~specialized~ videos about conversation, reading, etc.....maybe 👀

thanks for the tips! i started learning japanese 3 months ago and i try to be as flexible with it as possible. apps like renshuu, duolingo, kanji study, and bunpo are my go tos if i don't have enough time to open my textbooks. they're not perfect but at least i can make sure i'm exposed to some japanese every day! i've also started watching more japan vlogs and animes so i can practice reading and listening. i'm a lot less nervous about the language than when i first started 👍🏾

Great recommendations that helped me a lot years back when I was studying English and now I am trying to incorporate them in my Japanese studies. I trink the most important thing is to find something in your target language that you really like and then using this to learn, like really listening to your favorite songs and trying to understand the lyrics. And what really helped me too was the recap of your day in your mind thing or having a conversation in your mind. I did that a lot and it helped me so much in becoming fluent and coming over that barrier of embaressment to speak. Because when you are just talking to yourself, you have all the time you want to form that sentence and no one is going to judge. That way you can build up confidence to speak and actually do that later on. So it is a really really helpful method in my opinion to.

Yes to setting games you know to your target language! If your level is good enough, you can also change your phone or computer default language. I’m definitely not there yet in Japanese but did this for French and learned a lot of new words. Plus it gets you paying attention to the language you’re learning throughout the day.

Thanks for the tips! I've been trying to do most of these things but it still feels so hard. Specially to effectively open my mouth and speak. Have been trying a lot to prepare for some interviews but I failed most of them due to freezing or not being able to think fast on what terms to use. I study on my own and live in a country which I barely know the language of, and specially, have no one to train Japanese with other than my online professor from my home country which I have classes sometimes. I considered creating videos speaking Japanese for the sole purpose of practicing, but I have no courage nor the content to do it 😂

I find that motivation is just about everything in language learning. For some reason I was super motivated to learn Japanese and it took years but I’m pretty good now. Many years. Not 1, 2, or 3. Learning Korean now and that unlimited motivation is kinda dried up but watching videos like this one helps. So does reading. I’m actually looking for ways to break into reading for upper beginners. It’s so painful 😂

Hello! Thank you for your Japanese learning videos! I’m a beginner (currently crawling through Genki1) and I’m so glad I heard your advice about not obsessing over how to write kanji. I’m just using Wanikani for studying it but right now it’s not my priority to learn how to write them. Learning Japanese is hard as it is already, I would be too disoriented if I also added ‘kanji writing’ into this pile 😬

Good video!!! One big thing like you said... BE CONSISTENT!!!!! So many times you are on role doing well in your studies. Next thing you know you miss out on a day of study then it becomes a week... or month in some cases. I will say this though. At least a little bit of time a day is better than nothing. I reckon if I was more consistent like at least 30 mins a day... I'd be alot more skillful rather than stuck. To be honest, after genki series I wanted to venture out and i enjoy listening to easy podcasts along with a transcript. Finally will say this... I could listen, watch or read Japanese all day everyday.... BUT.... If I don't write anything down.... then I'm not studying.... Pretty much wasting my time...

Good tips. Not sure about the don’t write though. As a teacher there is so much research out there that highlights the connection between writing and memory. For kanji I continuously get wrong on wanikani I make the effort to write down and it certainly works. I’m well aware that I’ll never need to write it in a real life situation though.

Thanks for the real study tips as someone actually living in Japan. It's nice to hear study tips different from the oft repeated methods on reddit (by people extremely studious, only focusing on JLPT, or just beginners who aren't even going to last long in the language). That Hiragana Times looks pretty good too. I'm a forever learner been learning too long time like you, so your tips (and channel) are great. Keep up the good work.

Perhaps the only thing I can suggest that might help at the very beginning is to not only learn the Kana... Hiragana and Katakana... , but learn them at the same time (prior to learning grammar). If you haven't done this and need to learn Katakana after Hiragana, then learn the Katakana using the Hiragana symbols rather than the Romanized letters. On a personal note (so skip this part if you'd like), I'm slowly beginning to wonder if I'm actually allowed to learn Japanese, as I don't do apps, nor do I learn on a smartphone (I actually use it for contacting people... so like... phone calls and messages...yep seriously old school stuff), use next to no social network outlets (I've never taken a selfie, so why bother, eh?), and have little or no interest in 'Gaming' or Amine/Manga or reality dramas (regardless of the language they're in). Unfortunately I cannot sing or better said realize no one wants me to sing, so I'll spare everyone that grief. Anyway... I'm bumbling along in this journey simply by creating my own private vocabulary list (perhaps another recommendation, so in my case I try to learn words I actually use rather than textbook grammar that is selected especially for the 'student phase of life') and being very patient with myself.

Tip #2 is the biggest problem i see here in Puerto Rico. They are taught English in school since kindergarten or even PreK but as adults they use it very little because they weren't taught "conversational English". Some teachers even use British words like "lad" instead of "boy" so it becomes difficult for some to apply. It's getting better with the younger generations because of how Americanized the culture has become.

These are my tips if your goal is to learn through video games, which gives you both tons of reading and listening practice with native speakers. Okay so first off when you are starting your first goal to memorize the 2 basic Japanese alphabets which are called Hiragana and Katakana you can do this easily with KZread videos. Since you learning for video game I am going to recommend several KZread channels with that focus. First is Game Gengo this is the best also there are 2 videos that teach you all the basic Hiragana and Katakana, tons of video game language and grammar using video games. The next 2 are game streamers where you can learn a lot of game language. JapaneseQuest and Game Grammar they play games in Japanese and translate words and grammar also you can download the list of grammar that they made. The Finally 2 are general good the first is ToKini Andy which covers all the major grammar up to N3 which is most of it and lastly is Meshclass Japanese which is great pure Japanese channel teaching channel with subtitles and what also great is they have app which teaches you all the the N5-N1 vocabulary can also use it on the PC once you make a account. If get through all of this congrats, also it all free.
