I don’t wanna come up as having holier than thou attitude, but to understand this tutorial you first need to understand how paint layers, opacity, and the few brushes work first. I recommend watching David Revoy’s vid on shading (at least the preparation part) to get an idea of how all this shading works.

It's not really a secret, the thing is they just don't really post it in English so Westerners aren't gonna find it. Stuff isn't hard to find if you know what to search for.
