How To Achieve The Old School Look

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey everyone! Happy to see you again!
So sorry for the delay, I wanted to upload this a day before but things got ahead of me. I also want to apologize for the quality of the video. I had a lot of background noise I could not get away from so I had to up the BG music volume a bit and the audio of my voice may sound a bit weird as I tried my best to get rid of the humming BG.
Anyways! I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful. I wanted this to be a video for people who may not want to directly change their whole wardrobe into old school, but might want to try it out and use it for a few looks. SO I felt like making a small basics video to kind of get people that want to try it out and get away from traditional lolita and more old school. So, some of you already active in this style might find it kind of uninformative, but please keep this in mind!
I hope you are all well and I am so thankful for the continuous support of you all. I have made so many wonderful friends through my youtube and I hope to make even more :)

AHH I hate when KZread does this! I am pretty sure this person didn't delete their comment because it was a very helpful one - but sometimes youtube shows me the notification and what the comment says but the comment is missing on the video! I hope they dont mind me reposting it because I think its a really helpful suggestion (if you do: Let me know and I will remove this comment/your user attached!) Here it is: "ironcladmermaid commented: "For more ringlet wig options - FancyNancyHairUpdos on Etsy has clip on ringlet pigtails! They're very appropriately called the double lolita and have the same tight curl as the Maple wigs."

As a non-cross wearing old school lolita, I recommend sliver or gold metal jewelry with roses and other classic designs: it goes well with pretty much anything. Plastic and food jewelry looks too modern imo. Old school round headdresses/canotiers are also really nice, as are the right type of mini hat! (don't @ me). Thanks for the video!

Thank you for adding more recommendations for necklaces! That's very helpful :) I agree with the food and plastic jewelry. I was going to mention mini hats as well! Truly old school. Thank you for commenting ^^

I think crowns are a cool design, as well as roses like you mentioned. I don't wear crosses either. I wore one with an old school outfit once, and I think this must have been around 2005 or something, and it got really awkward. I was at a friends party and she invited a bunch of people I didn't know. My friend (regular goth) and I were the only one wearing alt fashion. At that party more than one person started a conversation with me about religion. I thought it was so weird so halfway through the party I asked my friend what was up with that and she told me people probably assumed I was religious because of the cross I was wearing. I always assumed that it was just logical that if someone wears a gothically styled cross with an obviously alt outfit, that it doesn't necessarily mean they are religious. But obviously at least back then not everyone understood that. And with the way some people are today I wouldn't want to run into people who think I'm being disrespectful by appropriating their religious symbol. It's totally turned me off from crosses.

Love the video! But kinda disagreed on the raschel lace part, meta raschel stuff looks expensive and extravagant. Nothing better for old school than meta's raschel socks imo. My fanciest blouse is also a meta raschel one!

I agree! I think its totally preference :) I always just say if people are afraid of raschel lace (it was a huge fear of mine entering the fashion the time I entered) to look at crochet lace instead. I think raschel lace is great too!

I found some wigs that don't have those exact ringlets but aren't that far on gothiclolitawigs and dream holic. I personally have very tight ringlets so I use my own hair, to style it I wrap it around some chopsticks when it's wet for a few minutes and that's it LOL I don't even have to use spray. I am a lucky lolita. 😘

Wow that sounds so cool! I am so bad at doing hairstyles 😅 I need to learn more and try to advance in that because wearing wigs isn’t always the most comfortable. But that’s so good that you found more ringlet wigs too!

Yes I agree this is mainly targeting the most "iconic" (meaning, what most people think of when they think of old school) styles of old school. I kind of wanted this video to be more for people who maybe have one old school main piece that they would like to wear more authentically and pushing the iconic look as best as they can and the easiest they can (so, a bit more generic). Though, I think old school sweet can also benefit from some of these as a lot of people think black = gothic and actually just because a sweet piece is black doesn't make it gothic! But I totally see what you're coming from and I totally agree! I tend to lean more towards the darker side. As for classic, you're completely right - there is very little representation of old school classic and I would love to see more because it is so cute! Though I think it has been becoming slightly more popular lately in the old school community so hopefully! The bag suggestions you made are totally perfect! I love those! As for RHS, I think they are neat - and something you can use to get the point across. But, they were never a shoe I was obsessed with and I think mary janes are just a lot more practical. I still think RHS are cool though! Also thank you for writing a lot! I love to read them and speak to others who also love old school :)

Yeah its crazy isn't it?! I am so happy I am able to make community posts now because of that haha it makes it so much easier to be able to connect with you all. And thank you! I always appreciate you watching :) I think the main reason why you might not see much is because most old schoolers I have seen tend to learn more towards writing blogs and solely using youtube as a place to make fashion films or do tags! I wish I could write more blogs but I just find video blogs a lot easier and more fun for me personally so that's why my old school content might seem to be showing up more than others - there just doesn't seem to be many around!

I totally recommend them because they're truly a life saver for lolitas living in climates that have snow, ice, and rain haha ! Thank you so much :) I love docs ; expensive but totally worth considering my first pair has lasted almost 9 years now and are still going strong! I think I have also heard Doc Martens have a repair program no matter the age (? could be wrong I just overheard this) and you just send them in and they can fix them right up! Pretty worth it if you ask me :p

I don't know in what year the "you shall not show knees" became a thing because showing knees has never been something I worried about, and there are so many street snaps with people wearing UTKs. I can't imagine the no knees thing being a legit old school rule/guideline. Did that become a thing after 2008?

  • @PureRaee

    @PureRaee

    2 жыл бұрын

That sounds pretty accurate. That’s why I say it should be disregarded especially since UTKs were the most popular for old school. The not showing knees really is probably from some blog post on live journal or someone like misako might have said it off hand and people took it to the extreme. I say it’s pretty easy to figure out if something comes off as a certain style or not and showing the knees in Lolita never effects that imo

Wigs wereny always essential back then 🤔 te me, who wore "old school" back then(i'm 36, started te try wear lolita around 18) 😸 there's the "old school" of mooks, street snaps in japan, the internet forums, an' the everyday of various countries ootside of japan. It was a mixture back then. I had natural hair, an' saw the wigs in mooks as mair of content filler fir the tutorials. Most the snaps, seem't te show wigs worn te events mair aften. Hec, Sachi & Yuka of Kokusyoku Sumire that natural hair back then. Yuka a thin, an' clean but oily lookin' thin fringe,,,Sachi,,,some rediculously long natural hair that was almost Heian era long. The length of her hair was rather impressive, even te me that use't te hae down a wee bit past ma rear(thesedays its chest te mid waste, fir self care practicality, te put it politely). I jus' git a hime cut, parted ma hair & pleated it(same as i always did, especially as a child), an' pop't on a headdress, tyin' it at the back, under ma pleats. That was a hing, as well. These days, its pleats, or bun & hairstick(better fir kimono, then lolita, i guess). Naebiddy has te wear a wig, unless the 100% want te. There's nae "old school" rule or law that says its required. 100% a personal choice. Some of us try't te curl oor hair as well, curlers or rags,,,wi' varyin' results. Ma hair can get mildly kinky, but, curls go straight after a few hours,,,even wi' the right techniques & products. Though, i must admit, wan hing that can also be mistaken as a rule, an' it clear te see why 🤔 Babytssb, still has the most iconic lolita looks, re-releases, of basics, that are pretty auld school. So, their ushiro pintuck blouse, that shirt like blouse they had wi' the pintucks doon the sides of the sleeves. Anyhin' wi' machine made torchon bobbin lace, or cotton embroidered lace, is a winner. But, wan ma looks i wore a lot,,,blue Emikyu dress, has pockets, very plain, square neckline, 3 tier skirt, botton of the top two lined wi' lattice like cotton heart embroidered lace the fold of the hem sort of deep & left plain. I love it, wan ma favourites. It went great wi' ma ushiro pintuck blouse, an' a basic Meta apron, that had a deep button aff hem, so it could be long or short. I still love aprons te this day,,,sewin' up an IW pattern(G&LBible 37, autumn 2010,, which covers German faerytales)wan in linen as a way te update it, wi' drawn thread & a carousel horse te whitework embroider on the chest. Aye, i'm tryin' te blemd auld school sensibilities & historically inspired eco-friendly inspiration 😺 at least te me, i feel that should be the future of lolita fashion. Pannier wise 😹 i wore & still wear almost 5(especially wi' that Emikyu dress, an' an' Angelic Pretty advert in an early G&LBible, inspired it). Babytssb tulle wi' torchon lace hem,,,fir the cotton linin', over that a couple short(45cm?)Meta organdie pannier, an' a slightly longer(55cm or so)meta organdie pannier. These days 🤔 i'm very tempted te experiment wi' cotton organdie, fir any lolita patterns that call fir synthetic. Be it pannier or a negligee housecoat hingy. Demonia wise,,,dinne, jus', dinne. I got the Goblin's, after a hunt of goth shops in edinburgh. I wore them,,,they were like steel toe cap feel & painful te wear, hell te walk in. Really no wirth the money & effort(i had te order in te the shop & collect). Whilst the Babytssb heart buckles did not withstand a year of fridays walkin' aboot Edinburgh,,,their round toes didny hurt. Comfort wise, at least, they felt wirth it. They were sae comfy. Which is why i got their real leather Petite Ribbons, a wee bit after that. Which i still wear now,,,they became ma everyday shoes(i git them in the brown, as brown LL was aw that was left, white sell't oot fast,,,but hey, they match ma hair & wirk well wi' blue,,,so theres a coodinate idea). I really wish they'd re-release them. As leather is better then synthetic plastic "leather", enviromentally. As real leather doesny degrade inte microplastics. Get a pair of shoes that are comfy, will last, an' fit both the "old school" look & yer everyday needs. Whit i've learnt,,,is back then, Lolita was mair practical, as odd as that is te say, mair basic. Accessories like shoes & bags, in the very early days, wereny always lolita brands. They were wedged in te havin' te be loli-able. Black shoes were fine wi' black & white, as well as blue & white, it felt like colour shoes were a brand hing & mair fir pink coordinates. White shoes, was mibbe copied fae the fact real viviene westwood rocking horse shoes, were worn in white, as well as black, by those that could affor te drop £400(VW, instead of £40 te £80(lolita brands), on shoes. Like anyhin' else in history that is studied via the media of the time 🤔 the full picture of everyday life, isny catalogued. Since "old school" is living history. There's many oot there te ask. Though 😹 i dare people te go revive that trend of twinnin' wi' a ball jointed doll 😸 I'm in "don't ask, don't get mode" on Babytssb's social media a few times this month. Te try "hint, hint" that I'd love te see a SD10/SD13/SDgr suitible sized Lolita basics range, plus SD sized versions of the Baby Classical range & their winter coats, that could be offered as an option te buy alongside their hooman sized preorders each year *sigh* then i see they re-release aw the "old school" shimotsuma monogatari film ootfits, on limited edition "one off" dolls set te drop on the 20th of August, in japan only at an event. I dreamt, i wish't,,,yet, i got a "be careful what you wish for" version of ma wish 😹 sods law stuff.
