    Some useful notes I took while watching this awesome and educational video: -Run Tails ONLY on a USB. -DON'T run Tor on Windows. -DON'T run Tails on a Virtual Machine -ALWAYS put the Security Level (Shield) on Safest (you need to do this every single time you boot Tails because it resets) -NEVER enable Javascript while browsing even if asked to do so. -If you want do download a file from the web ALWAYS disconnect from the internet before opening it. -Stretch the Tor browser window (don't fullscreen it)

    Because there may be inexperienced professionals who need privacy for personal safety reasons: Here are a few points NOT mentioned in this video. 1. Users should research just a little about the Development of TOR itself, it's funding and it's Jurisdictional obligations. 2. In most settings the ISP MUST keep records of User sessions. At any given moment, there will be a small number of users accessing any ISP (in encrypted mode) and so it will be trivial to identify users accessing the web Via TOR or indeed running ANY high end encryption. ISP would be forced to disclose. For those who do not understand this means the exact time and location path of the session can be monitored quite easily. ( Applies equally to use of TAILS) - NOTE that if an encrypted session was identified to have run across a Mobile network then it's trivial to extract the SIMM card details: it's number / phone type/ and even where and when it was bought. ALSO the observer can easily monitor for that SIMM card in future. 3 With reference also to point 1 - There is good reason to assume TOR nodes are compromised and user data could be accessed simply by following entry and exit nodes by synchronising data flow. By this method the session could be identified and probably encryption compromised. 4 there are only say 25000 TOR nodes active at any time. It's a village quite easy to police. 5. Always behave well and be legal at all times, be a good citizen, pay your taxes, - You know, be nice 🙂

    Old comment, but maybe someone will find this useful. A VPN is not a good idea unless you know EXACTLY what you're doing. It won't make you more private or secure, and it will likely decrease your privacy.

    Thank you for sharing. I will likely never visit the dark web but now I understand it a little more. I am almost 60 and didn't get my first computer until I was in my late 30s. I don't use a computer at work except for putting in my time. I seldom use a computer at home either. I use this Kindle tablet my granddaughter bought me for watching videos like this. I guess someone that grew up in the digital age would have a better understanding a dark web and why its needed. It really has nothing to do with illegal activities, Its more about what information the government has on you. Its kind of disturbing if you did grow up in the digital age. I am all for the dark web even if I don't fully understand it.

    You and I took opposite paths. I've been on computers since the early 80s... Simpy put... there is The Darknet, the Darkweb and what most people consider the internet. Darknet came first. Darkweb evolved out of darknet and the internet is everything you see and evolved out of the Darknet as well. *When I first started computers, all there was, was the darknet.* People around me didn't even know the internet existed. I used something called a war dialer on my computer, to sequentially call numbers for weeks. You ever remember in the 80s and 90s... you'd get a phone call and no one was there?? :) No one said anything... but they just sat there and waited and never hung up!! You thought... I hope someone doesn't hate me, so you eventually just hung up. Well that was me or people like me, scanning the phone lines for other computers. The war dialer would call number after number, weeks of scanning, I would end up with a stack of papers with phone numbers and it would show me where all the lines are with computers. So then after I got this list... I started to call up each number and try to access these computers and figure out what they are and how to use them. I found many many things from this war dialer, and I eventually found a system that I could scan (just like I did with a war dialer), which was a gate way in to the darknet. All totally for free. I would call up this one line, hook through there and then get free access to the internet (it was the darknet) ... and I was doing it to try to gain more knowledge. There was tons of information there, but no graphics... These were the dark ages of the internet. The darknet was the internet before the World wide web (WWW) came about (web pages, like the youtube page you are on is considered the internet) But before the WWW (world wide web) existed, only the darknet existed. Then from the darknet, the dark web was created along with the normal world wide web (youtube etc) The darknet is everything you can't see and you can see. The Darkweb is a anonymous area of the internet where a lot of illegal activity goes and the (WWW) is the internet everyone sees and everything else. Everything that you see ... like this youtube page or almost anything you access on the net is only about 10% of the darknet. The darkweb is about 5% of it and everything is ... the DARKNET. The darknet is MASSIVE! So most of the internet is hidden... and most people will never see it. They only see what people created protocols for, in order to enjoy maybe a web page, or some created things to do illegal activities (the dark web). But the point is, that everything that you see on the internet, how massive it is... is just a tiny tiny part of the darknet. I hope this explains its better for you and good luck on the net!

    well, it really has something to do with the illegal activity, quite directly - it’s just for your full understanding. i mean - are there convenient amazon-type of marketplaces dedicated to any imaginable kinds of illegal substances? absolutely. can u find a hitman - less common, but u absolutely can; etc, etc, etc.. but it’s sotra synonymous with any concept of a free web - if you have a space of total freedom it’s bound to spawn some products of those who take the freedom to their advantage which may conflict with the laws. but is it also the most safest way for an average person to access the web and be absolutely positive that they won’t leave any digital traces that could lead back to your identity - yeah, also absolutely true. which of course may be a thing one may wish ‘cause of various reasons - a kid researching the info trying to figure out his sexual preferences, an independent journalist researching dangerous topic, maybe just an average person that’s sick of being ad-stalked by all the algorithmic data collection thing that’s basically present on most platforms by now - and many many other down to earth very human reasons - you name it. so it’s like not the absolute positive thing, nor it’s the absolute evil - it’s all kinds of shades of grey as the most things in this life are. i would bet that it’s mostly used for the privacy by an average user, and being able to access the web privately is a basic and crucial human right in my opinion. it’s good to know that folks from older generations wish to have a better understanding about these kinds of modern phenomenons, reading your comment. stay safe and good luck!

    Hi Tech people. Let me ask a silly question please. I get the point we shouldn't run TOR on Windows even with VMs. But what if I save VDI on a flash drive? Is that viable? Thanks in advance.

  • @sunnykundi2479

    @sunnykundi2479

    Жыл бұрын

    Even if you save the Virtual Disk Image (VDI) on an external flash drive, running Tails or Tor inside a virtual machine on Windows can still pose risks. When you run a virtual machine, the host operating system (Windows, in this case) still has the ability to monitor activities within the VM. This means even if the VDI is on an external drive, the host system could still leave traces or be vulnerable to malware that can compromise your anonymity and privacy. Furthermore, VMs typically save state and data, which can also leave traces. This goes against the design of Tails, which aims to leave no trace on the computer you're using unless you explicitly ask it to.The safest way to use Tails or Tor is to boot Tails directly from a USB stick or DVD on a computer, without involving a host operating system or a virtual machine. This way, Tails operates independently of any other operating system and doesn't leave traces on the machine.

    Like most things in life nothing is 100% certain. Tor does offer most anonymity than any other service/tool, but its weakest link is the user using it. I've never seen a case where someone was identified because of a hole in tor. There have been many cases where users' anonymity was broken when they clicked on a link they shouldn't have, opened a file they should not have or did some other stupid thing.
