How to Accelerate FE Simulations of Lattices using Homogenization

Ғылым және технология

Homogenization is a technique that can greatly accelerate the simulation of intricate lattice or cellular structures. Instead of simulating the full geometry, you approximate its effective material properties based on the behavior of a single unit cell.
In this video tutorial, Jonathan Harris, Lead Application Engineer at nTopology, explains step-by-step how to use homogenization in nTop Platform. He gives valuable tips to help you avoid common mistakes and describes when and where to use it to achieve effective and accurate results.
Watch and learn how to:
- Accelerate the simulation of lattice and cellular structures by orders of magnitude
- Use homogenization to iterate rapidly during early stages of the design process
- Quickly identify the most suitable lattice types for your application

Great method Jonathan, thanks for the video. Question; can I simulate the mechanical response of a large cell array made up of different homogenized unit cells? e.g. say a 3x3x3 unit cell array where each of the 27 cells is a different homogenized cell? if so how scalable is the workflow to do this for a very large array say 100x100x100 cells? thanks

Could someone use hogenization results as material to run a thermal analysis ? If yes is somewhere the way to do it?

In actual the displacement is increasing. The variation is e-3 and e-2 you are considered only the nos. What is the reason?

Jonathan the menu is not same with new ntop version (4.8.2). I couldnt see the explicit menu and walled TPMS under the lattice tab on 00:04:13. When I select the "Walled TPMS unit cell", I cant add the box to body. Also there is an warning in the model "Volume Mesh version 1.0.0 has been deprecated and is no longer available due to a meshing library update" The program has changed a lot in 2 years. 😒

i couldn't figured it out how it is possible to export CAD from lattice structures such as gyroid ? there's no video or even help in the site considering export one cad from lattice. it would be a huge assistance if someone can help me with.

Hello Iman, here is a link to our article for exporting parts to CAD. support.ntopology.com/hc/en-us/articles/360048784874-How-to-export-geometry-as-a-CAD-part-STEP-or-Parasolid- You need to convert the lattice structure into a mesh first, then follow the steps in the article.

@@jackwalles3310 Thanks for responding Mr. Walles. I've read this article and i did it before. So what I understood from your site is you can't do quad mesh for lattice structure. It seems that is not possible for quad mesh to mesh lattice. When ever I've tried to apply Quadrangulate Mesh, that only completed 75% of it. Actually it stucked in 75% and never completed. Therefor my main problem relates to Quadrangulate Mesh for lattice structures. I wonder if it is possible for you to solve this problem by sth like hint or making a video about it. Because CAD of lattice structures are vital for Mechanical and Tissue engineers. Thanks a million.

@@imanghaderi5636 Yes currently the Quad Mesh block is designed to be used for Topology Optimizations. We are aware of this issue as many customers have the same intentions. We currently do not have a solution but we are looking into it. CAD programs can generally only handle around ~10,000 faces, making it difficult to export a part that those programs can handle. Lattices and TPMS parts can have millions of faces, as they are complex structures. Happy to help and answer questions!
