    I've been watching similar videos, and they recommend NOT measuring the temperature at the pan, but to use your scan tool trans temp reading. I don't have that on my scan tool, so how long do you let it idle? And do you go through all the gears first, then check the temperature? Thank you.

  • @YepThatsIt

    @YepThatsIt

    3 жыл бұрын

    hi, the temp sensor is on trans valve body, usually toward front of the trans. if you take a rough average of temp between front/middle/rear of trans pan, you will be in the ball park temp ( i have tested quite a few times comparing scan tool temp and digital thermometer - and i should make a vid of it! ) besides all that .... the choice is always yours cheers

  • @th600mike3

    @th600mike3

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@YepThatsIt There's no way for the temp in the pan to be higher than at the sensor. The sensor is part of the techm. It's just a little thermistor. So if you estimate the temperature to be a bit below the actual temp, you should actually be pretty spot on. I would work with whatever is the hottest temp you see, in the pan its self. That being said, those that build these trans for racing and myself, will overfill the 6l family plenty. The viscosity of factory fluid is low enough and never thickens really that it won't cause any noticeable extra drag. If the trans is low on fluid, or you put the wrong filter in (like the neck is too short to reach the bottom of the pan), that's when you will cause problems.

    How about the torque converter does it have to be drained? To fully replace new ATF on the whole transmission??

  • @YepThatsIt

    hi, removing trans pan and doing filter service is adequate to improve the old fluid properties. we only do a full flush if coolant has entered the trans, and even then you will need to do at least 5 full flushes to get it all out. see my milkshake trans fluid vids. cheers

    I've done this service, filled with Penrite oil that meets GM specs, correct temp etc, drove car, auto slips after slowing down to turn into another street. Check oil.....low.....wait to get temp to correct range....ad oil, back on the road.....still slips. Did everything as per video including the new position of magnet, new aftermarket filter.....same as A C Delco that was replaced. VE 2011 SV6 130,000km. What next please.

    hi, was there any issue previously? what was fluid condition? sometimes if fluid is very dark/old/burnt it is slightly thicker than new trans fluid, so if you have internal pressure leaks then new fluid can make it worse. also all depends on service history, mileage, amount of debris/swarf in trans pan and on magnet. cheers

  • @davecurry8300

    @@YepThatsIt Thanks for the reply. Oil condition was pretty good. No smell or bad colour. No issues before. I changed the 3 timing chains etc, all other fluids, so did auto service. Did my time in the late 70's, HQ-HZ, XY-XE etc. Not much muck in the pan at all, cleaned up real well, magnet was a bit thick with build up, replaced the same way you did, as all the magnet type trannies I have done. Will be looking at car again this Friday. Even though I have replaced oil as per temp & level, I may have overlooked the capacity for the torque converter. I'm pretty spot on with my levels normally, but this is the first one I have changed without the good old dipstick ! Maybe I'm the dipstick & have stuffed up somewhere ! Also, checked trans temp at pan, side of box & oil coming back out of drain hole. Got 3 different readings. Pan was the coolest within 30 to 50C, side of box was showing 80C & oil flowing out was 65C with engine running. Also did not replace the seal up in the tube as the spare parts guy, who used to service autos like you, said if the filter came away with a bit of effort, there is normally no reason to change it. My filter was tight & firm & required a bit of effort to pull down. Looked up tube, seal looked great, could not feel any damage, new filter fitted nice & tight as it should & as per video. Surely that seal couldn't be giving this slipping problem ? I think I'm still low on oil somehow, even though it was showing to be full. Thanks for your interest.

    Update, 29.11.2021, put car back up on 4 jack stands, everything level. Gear box temp showing 47C, pan showing 35C. Removed drain plug......no oil ! Used another 2 litres, with engine running, in Drive, wheels turning etc. Temp rose a bit, within 30-50C. Oil started overflowing, let drain a little, replaced bolt whilst some oil trickling out, test drove.....happy days, car is fixed. When I did it previously, oil was coming out, yet tranny slipped. I did run the engine, but did not put into Drive like I did this time. Torque Converter probably took some oil from previous fill & my temps were a little too hot. This time, all good. Job done !

    6l80e Is this the shame ? My bolt looks like it’s sits flush with the bottom of the pan. When I crack the nut there is a heap of fluid coming out and it doesn’t seem to stop Worried about running the trans dry

  • @YepThatsIt

    2 жыл бұрын

    hi, some 6L80 trans have an slightly different process for checking fluid level. many don’t have a dipstick..there’s a plug in the dipstick hole. the plug can be removed and the hole used as a fill point for trans fluid. bring the trans fluid temp between 30º-50ºC. check using a scan tool. it should just be trickling out the bottom plug hole at between those temperatures. you might owe me some beers, link is in description cheers
