HOW TO: 4M40 Boost Compensator Adjustment

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

WARNING: please don't copy anything in this video if you don't understand the basic principles of how a mechanical diesel pump works, and the effects of adding extra fuel to a diesel engine. You do it at your own risk.
This video shows how to adjust the boost compensator on a 4M40 2.8L Turbo Diesel Pajero. This process will be same/similar for Triton and Delica.
I recommend you have boost and egt gauges before messing with boost or fuelling.
Any questions, just post in the comments section. Thanks.
P.S. I made a slight verbal mistake in the video about more fuel on the steeper ramp, it's the opposite lol. But I was just trying to explain the difference of each side of the ramp. Sorry.
EDIT: I’ve done numerous other pumps after this one and found the ‘o’ in different spots. I think this is if the pin or diaphragm has been replaced. So you may need to work off the ramp angle with a bit of trial and error.

Thank you for taking the time to produce such an informative and high quality video. I (think) I know everything you're doing but learning how to do it to my Pajero 4M40 took me a lot of online reading, time and trial and error. You explained it so clearly and in such detail! It would have saved me a lot of time back when I started playing with this. Right now I also have a bigger turbo and a water to air intercooler system. I'm telling you this because you mentioned that you wanted a bigger turbo.

SpeedO'Philia thanks mate. I’ve just fitted a boost controller to mine so I can add more boost. However I’ve busted my arm so can’t drive for the next 6 weeks, so I won’t know how it goes for a while. Plan is to get as much as I can out if the factory turbo and upgrade next year.

    What turbo are you running?

  • @marcosrou

@@PERTHSCOOTER07 that's what I did. I initially added more boost to the stock TD04-12T (you may have a TF035 which is basically the same). That one went up to 19 PSI although the gains were negligible above 14 PSI. I suggest you set the standard turbo to 14 PSI, it might spike higher but 14 PSI once stabilized will be fine. Then I upgraded the turbo to the Kinugawa TD04L-15T "Monster". That one pulls amazing. Just perfect. I added too much boost (21 PSI) and caused it to have shaft play. I'm having it remanufactured as we speak. I will keep it at 14 PSI and it should run fine. Apparently the shaft is too weak for the large compressor wheel (15T) which is spun by the small TD04 exhaust wheel, so you can't give it too much boost. Anyways, as the turbo is considerably bigger than the standard, at 14 PSI it should pull much more. Plus the engine will keep it's low RPM boost as the exhaust wheel is the same as the one from the stock turbo. It's important for you to know that even though I had the boost set at 21 PSI for more than a year, the engine didn't seem to suffer from this, this engines are very robust as far as I'm concerned.

@@PERTHSCOOTER07 intercooler: I installed a water to air intercooler kit from frozenboost.com and adapted it to the engine bay. Huge improvement although I'm not sure if it's worth the time and effort it took me to install it. I did it for fun and to learn. I'm no mechanic or anything like that. Regarding the turbo lag: the Kinugawa has better response than the OEM turbo, plus, once it boosts you absolutely notice it. Great sensation.

Steeper? No . . . the further the pin comes out the more fuel you have; sounded like you said it backwards. Basically the deeper the depression (the side with less metal), the more fuel it will give. the reason you got boost faster was because you ADDED fuel; duh. Depending how you drive this miiiiight increase mpg, but not likely (gunning n coasting). You may or may not have more smoke depending on what the turbo can eat. Also the starwheel being down/softer makes for richer burn vs up /stiffer for leaner. The reason it was "laggy" before was due to a low fuel condition, which is okay for granny-type drivers but not those seeking power. Basically everything you said was backwards, not to be rude. The "fuel pin" you pulled out controls how much fuel altogether, the "smoke screw" up top controls the pre-boost fuel (say at idle/low speed cruising through a neighborhood); put it up and less fuel (good if you do tons of idling in traffic or just stands around liek for mail delivery drivers etc, down for more/power. If you wanted to make it less hazy, you could bring it up as far as it will go. The "starwheel" controls post-boost fueling/ the pressure first required by the turbo in order to give more fuel; put it too far up and it will be laggy but may be very economic for tons of highway driving; put it down and you have instant power. The cap with the "O" on it is just so you have a place-marker to align one fuel pin with the other; keep in mind for some people it may have been messed with/taken apart. Face the side of the cone that you want towards the front of vehicle. Hope this makes sense and helps. You're welcome.

If you’re not blowing black smoke anymore and the vehicle is running ok but you feel it’s a bit laggy then try it. If you mark the compensator and you’re not happy with the results you can just set it back to how it was. If you have the time you can try multiple positions till you find the sweet spot

It sounds like a boost leak. Most common issue is a split intercooler pipe. If it’s auto (which most are) get someone to put it in drive, left foot hard on the brake and slowing bring the revs up (just watch they don’t run you over) this will load the engine, start making boost and you can look/ listen to where it’s leaking.
