How-To - '14/'15 Silverado/Sierra Android Auto/Apple Car Play and Denali Cluster "OEM" Upgrade

The 2014, 2015, and some 2016 Silverados did not come with Android Auto/Apple Carplay functionality. This is the process to retrofit your older Silverado with the newer tech allowing you to run Google Maps/Waze and other music apps directly from the stock 8" infotainment screen effectively futureproofing its media capability as AA/CP run off the software on the phone and not the truck. Everything looks and works as factory like the truck was a 2016+ now, and the cluster is upgraded over the other options available to the Silverado.
The radio module, HMI module, and jumpseat console USB had to be replaced, and to get full functionality of the steering control buttons, you need to replace the cluster as well with the Denali/F-cluster. It may be possible your steering wheel controls work without having to upgrade the cluster as well. I've heard mixed results of the old USB ports working with Apple Carplay and not AA, but I found a new USB off a CT6 for $40. The radio module, HMI module, and new cluster had to be sent off for programming, which is VIN and car option specific (like parking sensors, HUD, etc). Check out the gm-trucks forum for more information, as you cannot simply buy parts off ebay and slap them in and call it a day.

Where can you find the parts number to verify if the parts match the vehicle? I bought the hmi not sure if it may matches. For example if it’s Bose or not.

I just got a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Non-Nav with the 8" screen. I already have the Cluster panel but I have been looking at upgrading to an HMI 2.5 module to get Projection. Where did you send your module off to get programmed? How much would you estimate it cost for just the HMI Module and programming? Thanks for putting together this Vid!

Nice! Should be around $100 to program the HMI and radio plus shipping both ways. I think you'll need the radio module in addition to the HMI, but I'm not 100% on that and the USBs ports as well. I sent mine off to white auto and media.

Did you only add the cluster to make the steering wheel buttons work with android auto? or would they work just with the new radio and 2.5HMI unit?

Some functions should work like next song and the siri / google button but other stuff might not work. Cluster is definitely not fully necessary, only for decoration and I might skip it if I did it again. It is nice though : )

I bought both from ebay. Contact WAMS or whoever is going to do the programming to get the list of compatible parts. the part numbers have changed over the years but multiple combos out of other gm vehicles are possible. My HMI was out of an impala I believe. gm trucks forum post is long but has all the info you need.

Did your cluster and radio display Denali logo when you open and shut the door? Or did your original Chevrolet logo come up? I'm getting ready to do this mod on my 2015 GMC Sierra.

can you provide a list of the places where you got these parts and how you got each of them programmed? Also was curious if you needed to change the wiring harness or the USB ports like in some other mods I have seen for this. I currently have a 14 High Country will this conversion work the same as it did with yours?

Hey Coby, I got the parts from ebay and gmoutletparts.com and programming done at whiteautoandmedia.com. There are a few others that can do the HMI and radio modules but I think hes the only one to do the cluster as well. Sent all the bits at one time to get programmed together. Here is my post on the costs on the gm-trucks forum. I got all my information from the forums and from WAMS (part number confirmation) directly through email. Total cost including all shipping = $1,115 USD, you can subtract $675 or so if you skip the cluster. www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/213775-replacing-20-hmi-module-with-25-hmi-module-to-add-carplayandroid-auto-to-2014-2015-silverado/?do=findComment&comment=2238146 I didnt need to change any wiring harnesses, just the USB port in the center console. But to be honest, I didnt even try the old one. There was also a white updated USB available on ebay and it was about half the cost but I scoffed at that. Then I remembered my USB in the glove box was white - save cash if you can. For your '14 I think it should work like factory, except maybe the Off-Road page on the cluster (does your '14 have that now?). I may be imagining things but I dont think the '14s came with the hardware to show steering and approach angles on the cluster. I was told that my truck is a 2015.5 indicating my original hardware was closer to a '16. Good luck!

Gm outlet parts. You'll need to get the matching year for your truck (2016 for 14 and 15 year trucks). Make sure you verify part numbers with whoever's doing programming and don't plug the unprogrammed cluster in your truck or it will theft lock.

@@ausenciotrejo7016 I would if you can, as you'll have to pay twice the amount of shipping costs. I would do the 2.5 HMI radio and module before the cluster if you have to make a choice. You can then add the cluster later when resources permit. Get in touch with wams they should be able to give you more info. Good luck!
