I find it interesting that for as much sense as this theory makes (at least in my head) that it’s been around for quite a while; people as far back as the 1950s were worried about music getting commodified and shortened as pop music took brought waves of songs 3 minutes long that repeated 4 times. Whatever the effect of media on shortening attention span, I think it’s possible that we would be approaching the limit (which i guess is a good thing? it cant get much worse, i think)

The question here is if people who use tiktok in excess are people who already have a bad working memory (such as people with ADHD) or if tiktok actually causes problems with working memory in people who aren't prone to overusing social media. In order to do determine this, they'd probably have to do a longitudinal study where they monitor partipants' social media use over years and years. Interesting study though!

I really liked that caveat at the end about how possibly anxious or depressed people are more inclined to use tiktok more often. Personally I see more weight in the argument that short form videos are somewhat harmful, but I don't like to ignore other possibilities or jump to conclusions. @guve252 жыл бұрын
So "tiktok use disorder" or "short video watching disorder"? I'm not dissing anyone, never used tiktok, but the underlying issue with tiktok is the bite size content that created habit for its viewer to be more demanding for short contents, thus leading to expectation of always be reminded of current events that relegated long term memory. Same principle then applied to youtube shorts.

It’s definitely the people who are addicted to TikToc had underlying conditions like Anxiety, Depression, Chronic illness and PTSD looking to the app for a dopamine hit, not vice versa, where emotionally stable people download the app and end up consumed by it. Most of us are just looking for something to watch while we disassociate.

As someone with ADHD i could never get into the short contents such as vine, musically and tiktok as the quickness of it all would leave me feeling internally chaotic. I imagine people who aren't already susceptible to that wouldn't notice the effect it has on them as it would take much longer. Where as I have a lower threshold and would feel unsettled after just a week of daily use.

Depression and anxiety are known to affect short term memory, the activity of using tiktok seem like the perfect bad habit for a depressed person. It is falsely soothing to know you can "quickly" watch some but all the stimulation causes mental fatigue. I looked at my watchtime while I was not treated and now that I have a decent treatment and there is about a 50% decrease. I think people with depression and/or anxiety tend to use tiktok more and it might lead to that statistic. But it could also be the effect of tiktok on the brain, I don't really know

At least YT Shorts stop after a certain number of videos, instead of Reels and TikTok that let you scroll forever
It’s not just TikTok. I quit Facebook because I noticed I started to have difficulty concentrating - like even having to rewind MULTIPLE times to finish a 10-min video. Our brain did not evolve to take in this much info. Side note (haha): Greg looks really cute here.
Good, more proof that I am NOT recommended to touch that dumpster fire of an app.
Basically, your mom was right. It is that damn phone :(
I mean if you look at substance use disorders, people with active ones of those also have lower cognitive capacities but when they stop or reduce use the capacity increases... Wonder if people who stop or substantially limit TikTok would see the same kinds of improvement

Yt shorts is the same thing, has the same effects, hypocrite.
When tik tok first came out I said “I’m not using it, it’s for children” Then I downloaded it. Used it once and stopped. It was too addicting. I knew I’d NEVER get work done 😂😂😂😂
I really liked that caveat at the end about how possibly anxious or depressed people are more inclined to use tiktok more often. Personally I see more weight in the argument that short form videos are somewhat harmful, but I don't like to ignore other possibilities or jump to conclusions. Just because A and B are present, doesn't mean A lead to B, there could be other connections at play.

Like people who are ADHD enjoying the app more because it allows our brains to watch something that we can keep up with, and because it’s short, if we don’t enjoy something it’s over quick.
Good thing I watch shorts, not tik toks
Y'all are being too smug for people who are watching a YT short
This is just... Addiction. Why do we keep putting different names on different addictions? It is the same as drugs, alcohol, food, and cigarettes. it isn't a friggin disorder

Tiktoks algorithm is so addictive, it is much more powerful than KZreads
wait is it that tiktok reduced working memory to 3 from the average 4, or is it that people who already have lower working memory where more susceptible to getting stuck in the feed? I already have low working memory and have a strict 15 min max set for tiktok because I felt it was easy to get addicted. I'm going to check out the paper
Downloaded TikTok to write a shit review + giving it 1 star.
This has to be the most important study for the good of the young
I’m glad they acknowledged causation vs correlation and didn’t just leave it at the clickbait
Do you realize that those are the symptoms with any kind of addiction
Don’t have TikTok, but I can still remember my giant worlds in my dreams and continue them throughout the day.
Being one of the people to never use tiktok is honestly a huge flex at this point.
_me with adhd so I'm more prone to anxiety and having impaired working memory is part of the package_ Interesting.
Before: wrinkles on the brain After: smooth as butter
"Oh gawd I have it" I love that so much
I almost forgot to activate my sarcasm detector
Personally i think its more so that people that are depressed and anxious are using tiktok as a getaway the same way people would be reading books playing video games etc. And seeing that most people on tiktok are middle school/high school level could support that
TikTok has perfected social media addiction
funny how people here talk about not using tiktok, while youtube shorts is literally a tiktok clone 😂
They made it a short video cause tiktok users can't watch a longer video
As someone with ADHD i could never get into the short contents such as vine, musically and tiktok as the quickness of it all would leave me feeling internally chaotic. I imagine people who aren't already susceptible to that wouldn't notice the effect it has on them as it would take much longer. Where as I have a lower threshold and would feel unsettled after just a week of daily use.
I'm dyslexic...I basically have no working memory anyway...
The lesser memory at 1 point can just be because tik toks are so addictive that once a person starts procrastinating they don't have time to learn anything new 😂
I feel like this applies to any social media. Tik tok just has more addicting algorythm
Same applies to other platforms as well, Facebook, KZread, and other stuff. Just use them as you want, don't let them recommend stuff for you not to deadlock for ever.
Without my phone, I'd probably spiraled into more rage induced bs, I become a bottle being filled with a liquid and the liquid cant escape
We’ve been known that tiktok has a highly advanced AI.
tbh almost all social media platforms have this same effect. i hate it
Not a disorder. It’s called addiction. Whoever made the name has TikTok addiction (TikTok brain).
The same is applicable for KZread shorts.
And this is why I’m so happy that I never installed that stupid app.
“I want to get out of this hell hUih”
Correlation doesn’t equal causation
So to summarize it impairs one’s level of intelligence
That moment when you use YT Shorts instead of tiktok
I don't need TikTok to have Bad Working Memory™, 'cause I've got ADHD
And that’s why I don’t have TickTock
As a person who doesn’t have tik-tok, I have to say the decision of not downloading it is getting better and better
Good thing I don't have a TikTok, it'll NEVER be as big as KZread.
I swear people who use tiktok have possibly the shortest attention span ive seen
I feel like it's extremely more likely for the usage of TikTok to be a symptom rather than a cause
Let’s not forget, KZread shorts are similar, so don’t abuse those either, it’s the same principle.
WAIT!! If Tik Tok changes your brain because it adapts to the way you provide it with informations, there must be a positive site effect to it too, amirite??
The whole use of internet already made us addicts .
Good thing I don't use Tik Tok, welp back to Instagram.
Me who uses KZread short: *haha, I'm always one step ahead!*
The fact that this is a youtube short witch is just tiktok in youtube.
I'm pretty sure it's just that tiktok attracts those types of people.
meanwhile yt shorts turning into tik tok

Ah yes, another "new thing bad" study...why don't they instead make studies on how to help teenagers with anxiety and depression instead of telling their parents that every form of escapism is bad for their brain
@beakless_duck

Well… I’m not entirely sure that escapism is a good thing. Relieving stress is one thing, but there are more productive ways like sports/exercise, art, etc rather than consuming short form content

@beaklessduck it might be different for everyone, but when i was a teen there was no tiktok (that weird zone between vine being gone and musically emerging) so for me it was all about KZread and music. Its not about escapism, escapism isnt necesarily bad, the underlying issue is that these platforms with their bite sized and fast paced content are getting these kids addicted, i understand this platform might be escapism for some but it can be very harmful, i think parents should definetly limit the time their kids spend on these apps

Or else we wouldn’t be warned about this and then more teens would be affected by this.
Remember those movie scenes of a person being tortured by being tied to a chair and forced to watch a wall of tvs, each on a different channel? Tik Tok is torture, just self imposed.
Phew, good thing I’m on KZread shorts.
I’ve noticed I’ve had it bad for months now. Deleted the app a couple weeks back and trying to focus on tasks that take more of my attention span. I still tend to scroll on Instagram, but at least now it’s one less app to be controlling me.
Check myself before I wreck myself
Depression and anxiety are known to affect short term memory, the activity of using tiktok seem like the perfect bad habit for a depressed person. It is falsely soothing to know you can "quickly" watch some but all the stimulation causes mental fatigue. I looked at my watchtime while I was not treated and now that I have a decent treatment and there is about a 50% decrease. I think people with depression and/or anxiety tend to use tiktok more and it might lead to that statistic. But it could also be the effect of tiktok on the brain, I don't really know
Everyone here watching shorts because it's literally Tiktok just doesn't have cringy dances: 👁️👁️
TikTok is the whippits of social media.
It’s 100% short form content that’s causing the issues. I have a very addictive personality. So I deleted all my social media apps. It was great for about a year. That all changed with KZread shorts.
This uses tic tac text
I have noticed this exactly with myself! My short term memory got absolutely trashed by yt shorts
i feel like this is just another form of social addiction, but at a higher level
For me, it doesn't matter what platform it is. If I have information overload, it feels like my brain melts, and I can't get my thoughts together, let alone do something productive
This is exactly why I didn’t download the app :/
@meiter4515

And you’re on yt shorts, same thing
Guys we are talking about social media in general. Glad to see studies being done, but TikTok is definitely not the only issue causing these problems. centered around social media
Tik tok is only affecting me because KZread is trying to copy them with these kind of shorts
basically tiktok makes people sad and dumb
thats just addiction jjdjsjdjsjs
I thought it was gonna be about attention span and impulsiveness
I've been saying Tik Tok is designed with evil psychologists to create an app that is addictive. I don't use it.
PLEASE put this onto a longer video. I promise I’ll watch the whole thing! Deleted Tiktok last month til I can get my usage under control.
In part the effect is related to the fast paced media bombardment we have been subjected to for most of our lives, leaving many with short attention spans and an inability to concentrate/focus for long periods of time, artificially induced ADHD
I don’t have tiktok for this reason. But then there is Instagram reels 😭😭
Me not using TikTok: 👍
Honestly i figured that out for myself 2 months ago. Feeling awesome and dumb at same time
I deleted it months ago and it took two weeks until i didnt "yearn" for it and i swear after those 2 weeks passed i literally felt different. And even tho it's been months, a week ago i dreamed i downloaded tiktok but in the dream i remembered i had deleted it for a reason and quickly did so
so basically tiktok lowers your ram lol
Isnt that just a regular internet addiction
I deleted tiktok and my life got better. I don’t miss it, you won’t either. It feels like it’s designed to decimate your mental health.
So, as someone who deals with chronic illness as well as mental illness such as anxiety and depression, I will say that I tend to use things like KZread shorts or video games to help combat my anxiety. It allows me to get involved and enveloped in something that takes my mind away from... well, my mind. I do believe that it is more that it feeds into that demographic. My sister, who also suffers from anxiety, is on tiktok 24/7. The withdrawal, and again this is just my uneducated guess, would be because you now don't have something to occupy your mind and disappear from your own thoughts.
I went on tiktok and literally deleted the app before I lost my last brain cell. My brain was over heating and fried with steam shooting out my ears. Such an awful app and people on there.
