Ill never forget when one of our girls was sleeping on a ledge..Went to pet her and give some scritchy scratches cause she was adorable and immediately she freaked out and fell down a similar height :( She was fine though thankfully, but it's amazing how far they can go

My 7 month old cat fell from my apartment 9 stories high and she’s after two days she’s perfectly fine. When I first saw her she was bleeding from her mouth and couldn’t walk right I couldn’t afford taking her to the vet so I did my best to care for her and now within two days she’s eating jumping on furniture and is completely normal 🥺🙏 cat are truly amazing creatures

This comment calmed me down a bit yesterday at 4 am my cat fell from my 6 story apartment and I couldn’t take him to the vet bc it’s thanksgivings day so he’s been just at my bed and his back paw is clearly injured and also had blood on his nose and lip but I’ve been keeping a close eye on him he seems to be breathing fine and no pain when I rub his stomach or ribs, I’m taking him to the vet tomorrow

In 2010 my cat Diego fell down 12 stories and landed on grass. We took him to the vet and at first we thought he was going to be fine but then he started having trouble breathing. The damage to his lungs was too much for him, he didn't make it through the night. Rip Diego🐱🐾

My cat today fell from the first story off my balcony and he bled hid nose and mouth and his teeth fell too as well as breaking his legs. now he can't walk and he is so depressed. I can't believe this happened to my baby. I took him immediately to the veterinary and after tomorrow I will take him back to it until he heals. I am so sad, this is literally my worse day ever. Part of the reason that cat's injuries didn't get much worse after the 7th floor, is because the study you reference did NOT take into account the number of cat's that died from falling above that height. Also people are a lot less likely to report that their cat fell if they died.

yea, cats are pretty incredible. doesn't stop me from freaking out when my cats start doing their gymnastics thing on railings and then fall because they had a clumsy moment. we just can't get over how animal instincts and abilities are just so much more amazing than ours. we have opposable thumbs and walk upright...yay. and that's about it.

Earth sometimes you can be a total ass and very rude.

Sitting on my lap is a 5 month old kitten who has spent most of her life in hospitals and cages recovering from injuries sustained (likely) due to falling out of a window. I live in China, where they sell chicks or baby turtles in little plastic balls with nothing but a few air holes; toys for children to play with a few days until it dies of starvation or thirst. I found this kitten on death's door back in August. The first vet I took her to told me to throw her in the bushes - if I wanted a cat there were tons of healthy strays. The second said she had a horrible contagious disease, even after I pointed out that I thought her leg was injured - that just made him push and pull on it really hard to "feel" for breaks - she cried so hard and was obviously in so much pain from what he was doing, but he didn't know enough about animals to even realize (or just didn't care). He told me she was just an unwanted cat, don't waste my money running all these expensive tests to find out what terrible disease she has, she'll be dead soon anyway. Finally the third vet actually knew about animals AND cared. He took an x-ray rather than forcefully trying to feel for breaks. I won't say he's as good of a vet as we have in the States, but at least he's not a complete idiot. She had a broken hip as well as extensive injuries to her face. Her nose was so clogged with dried blood that she couldn't breathe and her eye had blood in it. After 6 weeks of cage rest she had to have surgery to remove the top of her leg bone. She's still recovering from that surgery and still having trouble with her eye. Before I rescued her, I always wondered why animal adoption contracts here required a home visit to make sure you had bars on the outside of your windows. Isn't it common sense to not leave wide open windows with no screen? Apparently not. Some idiot left a wide open window for a 3 month old kitten to fall out of. Unfortunately, most people don't adopt, they go to pet markets and buy animals (those places are worse than puppy mills - the animals are often already sick and the new owners abandon them once they find out). I always wondered how far she fell - I guess this video at least gives me an idea. She probably fell from somewhere below the 7th floor, considering her injuries. This kitty is the sweetest cat ever. She's had such a rough start to life but is so loving. She would spend every moment of every day laying on my lap if she could. Although I've already got two cats and it will be expensive to bring three back to the States, I've decided to keep her. I just couldn't face her going to someone who might potentially put her in danger (just by not knowing how to take care of pets) or might abandon her if she got sick. She's had such a hard start to life, she deserves to have a good one.

I remember when my neighbor threw his old cat off the 15th floor of our condo as a kid. The cat landed splayed out just like in the video but didn't move for a while. Then she got up and walked out away like nothing happened. My mom would say that cat is magic... but I guess this is the answer. Thanks!

the parachute position is more about it being helpful for slowing descent, rather than sparing broken limbs. in theory, the best would be to fall splayed out most of the fall and then quickly maneuver to landing on the legs last second to prevent damage to vital organs while still slowing the fall as much as possible. this, in addition to looking for things to help break the fall, is what you as a human can try to do in the event that your parachute fails while skydiving or base jumping, or if falling from about the 100th story or above. as most people are not going to be falling from 100 stories or higher though, generally the feet first idea is best for building falls, especially due to limited reaction time.

Last night my cat slip on roof top and fall from 5th floor and survived magically with no damage its shocking surprise for me and my neighbors. I don't care how but I'm happy for him.

Wait, if at 5 stories a cat falls the fastest without getting faster anymore and has a good chance of surviving does that mean cats could fall from any height with a relatively large chance of living!?

Well, technically yes, if you can endure the landing at your max freefall speed it doesn't matter how high you fall(ok, don't go skydive from space, that might not work) because once you reach the max freefall speed that's it, you can't accelerate any further. Best part is, that applies to basically every single "thing" we see around. It's the exact same principle that makes parachuters survive at landing, the chute makes their max freefall speed something they can easily endure.

This idea is based on a study from the 80s that examined 132 cats that were brought to the vet after falling out of buildings. If your cat dies falling from a skyscraper, you're not going to take it to the vet, you're going to put it in the bin. So the dead cats weren't included in the study. In Singapore they reportedly find 5 dead cats a day that have fallen out of buildings.
