How these companies cracked the four-day work week

A growing number of businesses are embracing the four-day work week - an idea that was considered radical just a few years ago.
The Covid-19 pandemic appears to have sped up the adoption of a shorter working week, with workers increasingly demanding better work-life balance.
So, what can we learn from the companies and workers that have taken the plunge?
Watch the video above to learn how three companies have adopted the four-day work week and what it means for their employees.

That's how the world is supposed to be. A balanced professional / personal life schedule, where we continually enjoy life each week, have time to take care of our health, to enjoy our loved ones, do sport... instead of waiting desesperatly for the 2 holidays weeks per year, or for the retirement time, when we'll be too old and sick to enjoy anything. The 4 days work week should become the norm for both white and blue collar jobs, in Europe and then all around the globe. I have been saying the work week needs to be 4 days ever since I started working. With only 2 days off now all I do is work all weekend (errands and housework) and Monday I go back to work feeling exhausted. If I take a day out of the weekend to relax or go out nothing is ready to go for Monday. I hope more and more companies will start looking into this model. We are tired of being tired all the time.

I agree. It's the same for me as well. Sometimes I have to work 6 days so in that 1 day off I have to try to squeeze everything else like housework and errands into that 1 day off. I have no objection to working 4 days for 10 hours per day.

I work in the medical device industry and we embrace the 4 day work week. We have half of the employees work 10 hours, Monday - Thursday and the other half working 10 hours, Tuesday - Friday. So every work day, people are in the office. Work is not pushed to the side during our 4 day weekend because we all share the work load since there is always someone there on any given work day. It keeps morale up and I feel as if we work harder knowing we have a long weekend to rest up. Coming back from our 4 day weekend, I feel refreshed and less stressed and ready for the work load ahead.

Tobi, I think this model would work, especially for our business Software Development. We are a very Customer centric company and I don't in any way see the model that Joe O'connor is pushing will work for us. He wants to cut hours, expect the same throughput and pay in 35 hours? so, what happens to Customer support on Fridays? I am a Senior Test Analyst and based on Sprint scheduling all of this could be redistributed, but I (we) always have the Customer in mind and in your model Tobi, it makes sense splitting the week vs. shutting the whole company down on a Friday.

Do NOT give a S#!T what a company says, how it cracks or requires approval for a 3-4 day work week. People/working class and society ought to dictate the standard work-life balance and corporations are the one that have to adjust and adapt to society or die. 3-4 day work week is NOT at the suggestions and benefit of corporations and their shareholders, it is and SHOULD be recognized as the suggestion and shaping by the working class and society in general.

And maybe for small business there are subsidies to make this possible, but for large corporations, so what if there is a little less profit? They are still making a profit and let’s be quite honest, for the majority of those large manufacturing and even service industry conglomerates, this just means a little less in perks for their VPs and Csuite executives, oh and slightly less dividends for their shareholders. I promise you, they will learn to live on slightly less. At time some of that profit went to improving the lives of their employees on the ground and in the daily grind. We just have to think out of the box to make it work for each industry.

It's an age old thought that more hours = more productivity. But that takes away the human element of the equation (quoting 'Sully' here!). A more rested human being become more efficient per hour. Imagine working a 16 hour shift. You're not going to be very efficient at the tail end of that shift! I'm a teacher who works 4 1/2 days a week, due to local customs. It has made a massive difference to work/life balance, and students are learning more as well! Students have more time absorbing the information they learn in classes, and can do more things outside of the classroom.

The three companies featured here are pretty unique in that the work can be done from anywhere. How about looking at restaurants and grocery store? See what their owners think? If you are going to implement 4 day week, they will have to hire extra staff, which means cost will go up. So are customers willing to pay more? Doubt it. Some jobs like graphic design or coding can easily fit any work model as it’s depends solely on you completing the task by the deadline. Does not matter how many hours you put in. Others, usually blue collar work requires a fixed set of time, so this may not be an option. Think of a diner that’s opened for 5 days. How will they switch to a 4-day work week for their employees, while running for 5 days? Either you increase your headcount, results in cost increase; Reduce the number of days the diner is open, results in lesser profit; Implement shift with existing headcount, results in likely slower service and longer working hours for employees.

@@vulpixelful I was about to say the same thing. I think people are making this harder than it should be. Businesses can still keep their same hours (or similar ones) and just work the workers in 4 day shifts. Businesses should stop hiring the bare amount/skeleton crew and at least hire 1 additional person per shift. They’re being cheap and it’s making life harder for everyone. My job runs on the skeleton crew model. There are only 4 full time workers and 1 part timer worker on staff. On the weekend, only 2 of us work the entire day. You can’t call off on weekends because there is no coverage and throughout the week if something happens and 2 people can’t come in, you have 2.5 people doing the job of 4.5 people. With the past 2 years you can guess how many times our super small staff has been understaffed. But all of that could change if they simply hired another full time staff member. And I don’t work for a small company either.
