I am curious as to what the locals actually think. Not just the poor or those in the top goverment. A rounded, well informed understanding of their culture and different political groups and identities would give a much better understanding of if things are bad and/or good for how many and for which parts of the population. We in the west usually project what is good and what is bad unto other parts of the world. Now we are usually right, but our perspectives are from our own culture and we therefore speak and suggest solutions, that makes sense in our own culture. But these often fail on a local level because there are, among other things, different stages of culture and history a people have to go through in order for them to act and think in certain adventagous ways of the modern world. This process is multi-generatinal.

Nauru was fucked from start. And not because of stuff they went trough. They are extremely small Island, out of way with extremely small population. All things that make most trade and industry just not possible or competitive. Tourism would be super unlikely, for those reasons, there's plenty of really nice topical places that are more interesting, closer to major population centers or just more developed. Nauru is is after all just very small flat tropical island, there just isn't really anything that would attract tourists to make it actual sources of revenue. They did get one chance to do something, but they missed it unfortunately. To me, what their beat chance would have been was to take offer from Australia, to relocate there, they would have got island to themselves with way better prospects. Obviously while that island would be given to them, it would still be part of Australia so they would also become Austalians and essentially become local government so it's understandable why they refused. But with relocation to Curtis Island and infrastructure paid for by Australia + money they still got from phispate, they could have become quite propesperus.

don't destroy the marine ecology. Maybe they could have / encourage scientists to come study the people, ecology, geology. Teach advanced studies to college students from Australia, New Zealand, and surrounding islands. Teachers could be researchers. Maybe there could be a mission / programs for students and locals, to educate and find a way for these people to come back from this and survive. Why only have a college to teach basics to the people? I think thats a missed opportunity.

The good people of Nauru were scammed by sophisticated international financiers. When I moved to Australia from Canada. in 1988 the Nauruan's received free lights to Melbourne twice per year, the got (almost) free houses in Nauru when the married, and (almost) free accommodation is Australia, at locations such as "The Islander's Place" in glitzy Easy Melbourne. They deserved to get a Sovereign Fund like that of Norway. Instead the got robbed.

they have nice beaches that will stay there forever unlike the other substance that went extinct. they should build hotels, beach bars and open a couple of factories making electricity and cars, or weapons to keep the trade with usa uk and australia so their currency dont get to be a terrible joke. In the worst case as russian mafia started doing some money laudring buisness there they could become a drug free country, it would be ok to export and deport drug substances but it would be illegal to use or sell these drugs on public. And that means that the goverment should have only one drug bank exporting it to the mafias that were having their money into nauru's national bank. With that more and more mafias would like tto spend their money on buying drugs by the legal and only supplier.... NAURU
