How the Viking Invasions Changed Europe - Pixel History EXTRA

A lot has been said and done about the so-called “Vikings” recently. They have gradually risen in popularity in recent years with the advent of several different forms of media that have put them back in the spotlight again and back into popular culture to boot. But what if we were to look solely at what we actually know of these mysterious yet influential people?
In part three of our three Viking-themed episodes, we’re talking about the influence the Vikings had in the tumultuous times that they navigated the waters of Europe. We previously looked at the historically dubious tales of Ragnar Lodbrok which were a window into this time, but now it’s time to get a little more non-fictional in this episode of Pixel History EXTRA!

Thanks a lot for the support! I'm not sure what happened either, but it seems the KZread algorithms worked in my favour for once! Very surprised - yet thankful - with the sudden growth!

Thanks! It honestly came out of nowhere, but I guess that's what you get when you make a WWII video. I hadn't even thought of how popular a subject that is (even if it's hardly my favourite subject). But that's life for you sometimes. Everything's all good and well until the Germans show up. ;D

@@Hipstorian Yeah WW2 is definitely a popular subject, which is a bit of a shame because people don't seem to care about other subjects... but I'm glad it helped you out man. Hopefully, you can use your new-found fame to bring attention to other subjects!

I really enjoyed this video in relation to your work on Ragnar Lothbrok, and appreciated your take on the historical record in relation to the Vikings! It was fun and engaging, and did a good job of illustrating the ways that Christian Europe tried to thwart (with mixed results) the flow of northern invaders! As someone who primarily studied the Anglo-Saxons, I have to ask - do you ever have plans on making a video focusing on a figure such as Alfred the Great? He’s a truly fascinating historical figure, and I’ve always wished he was discussed more within the online historical community! Either way, keep up the great videos - appreciate all your work, and look forward to seeing more!

Yikes, completely overlooked this comment in between all the spam I got for the Generation War video. Sorry about that! Thank you so much for the kind words though! They're very appreciated.

Great video, quick note: William the Conqueror did not defeat Harlald Hadrada. Hadrada was defeated at Stamford bridge by the English King Harold Godwinson. William went on to defeat Godwinson at Hastings but this was a few weeks later.

Considering how Chrono Trigger is among the best JRPGs out there for me, I consider that a very big compliment! They're actually based on Octopath Traveler's sprites (which, I suppose, is also inspired by Chrono Trigger), so do check that one out if you're interested in that kind of games. :) Anyway, thanks for the kind words and thanks for the support!

Love your dedication. However the ship design was bugging me. They look like Greek triremes. Did Viking ships have naval rams? I thought the unique thing about them was their shallow draft, allowing them to move up rivers and enter areas other ships could not reach. I could be wrong, but it was especially jarring after that intro where they’re bickering about being “real Vikings”. Not all oar-ships are made equal. Thanks for the video though, the pixel art is very pleasing to the eye.

Aha, but you see, these Vikings were using re-purposed Greek Triremes for their journeys! Nah, you totally got me there! The original model was indeed a Greek Trireme which I touched up a little bit. I would have touched it up a bit more, but it took me waaaay longer to get these videos out than I had planned to begin with. So, just a convenient little bit of ignorance from my bit. Good catch nonetheless though!
