"They were beaten up and bloodied in Afghanistan as well if I am not mistaken..." You are mistaken. I don't know where from you get these notions. Might want to rein in your "my tribe yay, their tribe boo" mentality. Soviet losses in Afghanistan were around 12-15 thousands. American ones in Vietnam were around 60 thousands. VDV did, obviously, have their successes, and plenty of them - in combination with other units and types of military. Which is not surprising, as they are specialized mobile troops and a generally sensible way to use them is for specialized tasks like cutting off an important route. Kuril landing operation against Japan, if you absolutely need a distinct succesful example. Even the mass VDV operations that are generally regared as failures, like Vyazma operation... These 10 thousands something troops ended up fighting completely surrounded, in contact with seven German divisions. They did not surrender, they did not morally break, and they ended up achieving a breakthrough to their own lines. Come on. Name one example where American or British land troops did something like that in WW2.

IIRC, the 1934 exercises were described briefly in "Blood, Tears and Folly" by Len Deighton. Apparently, Kurt Student was an observer of the exercises, and watched the paratroop landings. The paratroop force included a military band, which picked themselves up after landing took out their instruments and "...started playing like men possessed":)

@Dr Disconect I don't know about raw numbers but in terms of effectiveness the US is #1. They can drop huge numbers of men and equipment in any corner of the globe since they not only have a huge number of massive cargo planes to air drop men but they also have a ton of allied bases and their own based hosted by allies all across the globe while Russia lacks that. I honestly dont know russias raw numbers but theyve only been able to send small groups of special forces to places they dont share a border with since the fall of the USSR. The effectiveness of the soldiers themselves and their equipment is a matter of debate and russias true numbers are murky but americas reach and recent (post USSR) operational history are clear. The soviets did have a large airborne force but compared to NATO it was more secondary to their military since they always planned on mass infantry and armored assaults coupled with huge artillery bombardment. NATO's air superiority and navy made soviet airborne forces a risky investment compared to more conventional special forces. NATO meanwhile depended more on marine and airborne operations so they'd be more likely to invest in them heavily and to a further degree since their geopolitical goals, strategic and geographical situation, and their doctrine all depended more on it.

Great and informative video with lots of details. But, regarding the failures of VDV in The Great Patriotic War, I want to say this: Any airborne operation, as I understand it, is doomed, if the ground troops don't manage to break through and rescue their airborne comrades. Since the RKKA was in a desperate situation in 1941 and 1942, majority of the well trained pre-war paratroopers died, either because the ground forces had not made it to them, or because they were deployed as ordinary infantry in desperate counterattacks. Up until 1943 Germans enjoyed numerical superiority on the eastern front. In sharp contrast to what the dumb pop-culture makes us believe, soviets had less men. Their artillery was weaker, their chemical industry could not produce enough ammunition. And so on. So, soviet paratroopers fell for their country without getting a chance to exploit their skills. Anyway, thank you wery much! Greatings from Prague, Czech Republic, Central Europe.

On the flip side, Soviet Airborne forces didn't just fight really well as conventional ground forces (in spite of it being less glamorous and not what their commanders had intended), the y also formed the backbone of many of the Red Army's elite 'Guards' Divisions. For example, the 13th Guards Rifle Division that fought with distinction at Stalingrad, was previously an airborne division.

VDV - Russia Ukraine war edition: Good day comrades, rise and shine. You know the objectives that were assigned to us VDV. The landing zone is just up ahead. Wait, is that a missile headed right for us? VDV!! I died to wreckage flames! I was told we were on our way to play some fun war games! In the afterlife, there's some interesting faces I meet! Faces of poor Fallschirmjägers that died in the invasion of Crete! VDV!! I didn't sign up for this! I was told Ukrainian soldiers always miss! But now my chopper is falling out of the sky! It's like command didn't even try! We're on the ground taking fire from all directions. Why did command do this to us of the VDV? The Ukrainian's have us pinned down all over. We won't last much longer if we don't get support. VDV!! Where's our support?! Did that other squad even capture the port?! They're in the water?! Please don't tell me! We were sent on a one way journey! VDV!! Going down over Ukraine! Our helicopter drops like water during heavy rain! We flew here and I have no idea why! Comrade, I think we're all gonna die! We're all gonna die! Ooh!! Ahh!!! *Guitar riff intensifies* I'm all that's left of my squad now. All the rest got shot down much earlier on. Life is short. I know that now. I also know we can't capture a single town. VDV!! What will we do?! Our commanders face is now a pile of goo! I wouldn't be here if Putin was smart! Why did this war even have to start?! VDV!! Does it even matter?! Soon our vehicle will be pulled away by some guy in a tractor! We still haven't taken any objective yet! Oh look, here comes a Ukrainian jet! VDV!! Everyone is running from here! Hey, I think I was just shot in my right ear! Medic! Hurry up and stop that bleeding! Oh forget it. We best be fleeing! VDV!! My life ends this way?! I won't get to celebrate my 19th birthday! Is that another squad landing nearby?! Well, those poor fools are all gonna die! Ooh! Are all gonna die! Ahh! Are all gonna die! Ohh! Are all gonna die! Ahh!

Then when situation was broken by the germans, majority of troops returned to friendly lines. How is that for a poor combat commnad? Besides, Allied airborne has went through aimilar path of development by the end of the war. While VDV established its core by early 1941 and got rid of obsolete gliders.

German tank and air force personnel were trained by the Soviets in Russia during the 1930s because the treaty that ended WW1 forbid their development. Did the Soviets also train German airborne personnel? It would be assumed that the Germans did observed the Soviet operations. Germany in no way would have been able to develop a military that was capable of combat operations by 1939 with out the assistance of the Soviets in the early 1930s.
