How the Raiders' obsession with success led to prolonged failure

Спорт

Al Davis had a fairly simple mantra: just win baby. The Oakland Raiders did a lot of that from 2000-2002, culminating in a trip to the Super Bowl to face their former coach and architect of that early 2000s squad. As we all know, for Oakland, it didn't go well...like at all.
But having won three straight division championships, there was understandably a belief that this team could maintain some level of success. They made it to the Super Bowl once, why couldn't they do it again? Well, as it turned out there were quite a few reasons. Check out this episode of Collapse to relive how they fell from greatness.

    My favorite thing about this (that I didn't have time to squeeze in) was that in 2008, the Raiders were so bad that four of the five teams they beat then immediately got rid of their coach. Thinking about starting a blog on sbnation.com where we can post details like that or go deeper into aspects of this that didn't fit the video. Would y'all read that sort of thing?

    It's a really interesting story, where both teams lost their best asset at head coach. It was unsustainable for the raiders after gruden left and they chose to keep everything the same, and the bucs were unsustainable after removing Tony Dungy and replacing him with Gruden. That being said Gruden was able to take the bucs to the next level when they were still "Dungys" team. Unfortunately the next year things began to decompose because the mindset of defense would become secondary to Grudens offense prowess. Gruden is a good coach, but he won with someone else's team against his own team. It's really cool that the team he built made it to the superbowl without him leading it in my opinion. And it's also really cool that he became a plug in head coach who took a playoff caliber team to the next level and won the superbowl. Sorry for the rant haha

    I think it was unsustainable either way for the Raiders even had Gruden stayed for 2002, though they might’ve won because Gruden goes with the run focus that Callahan had originally planned without changing it. But age catches up with everyone.

    Listen to me: you guys have to do the LA Kings. Their post-2014 collapse is one of the most salacious, compelling sports collapses of all time. They went on an insane, dominant 3-year run from 2012-2014, in which they won two championships and reached the conference finals in between. They were virtually unbeatable in the playoffs during those years. Then it all fell apart. Mike Richards was arrested at the border with a truckload of OxyContin. Slava Voynov was arrested for beating up his girlfriend. And Jarret Stoll was arrested for possession of cocaine at a Vegas club. The team imploded overnight. They missed the playoffs in 2015, were bumped in the 1st round in 2016, and missed the playoffs again in 2017. Their Cup winning coach and GM were fired in 2017, and now they’re in the middle of a rebuild. They went from one of the most dominant three year runs in hockey history to a scandal ridden joke in the course of literally one season. It’s insane. Oh, and that last Cup they won in 2014? They won it on Friday the 13th. Can’t make this stuff up. Great content. Do it.

    @blake bunker This is just an excuse to hate on an L.A. team, like what else is new? I've got a far better one...the Toronto Maple Leafs who haven't been to the Stanley Cup Finals since they last won it in 1967, the very year the Kings began play in their first season. If the Leafs fail to win in 2021 they'll equal the New York Rangers cup drought record at 54 years. Top that one, blake.

    @holymolythejabroni9040

    @@sjdrifter72 I think you have a pretty vague understanding of these videos. The entire idea of the collapse series is to cover teams who were actually great and then quickly, tragically, or strangely fell apart. The 2012-2014 Kings fit that perfectly. No one cares about the endless mediocrity of the Maple Leafs. There’s no narrative there other than, “one more year of the Leafs sucking.” The 2012-2014 Kings actually have a legitimate collapse story: great team who fell apart due to off ice scandals. The Leafs have just sucked for a long time. It’s boring.

    One of the hardest parts of being a Raiders fan is having to grapple with Al Davis's legacy. He is the architect of everything the Raiders represent, and of its 3 Super Bowl championships. But he's also THE reason the Raiders are one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the NFL since the 90s. The idolatry around Al is disturbing at times.

    I'm curious if you still feel the same about the raiders trade now? With their draft picks from 2019 they had, arguably, one of the best drafts in the past 10 years. They got clelin ferrell, Josh Jacobs, Jonathan Abrams, Hunter Renfrow, and Max Crosby. All of which, except kinda for Clelin and Abrams, because of his injury, over preformed in their debut for the raiders. Then they also got Tyrell Williams, the entire offensive line back into shape, and even though people are really arguing over Carrr, his stats, and play seems to be improving year after year. But I guess you could just generalize them and say, "Raiders will always do raiders things." If by that you meant, rebuild a team entirely to become a hopefully dominant franchise, then yeah lol, the raiders just did that, or at the very least are moving in the right direction.

    Franchise mode peaks in 06/07 depending on who you ask, declines slowly for a few years, then declines rapidly and bottoms out. Superstar mode is spawned and rises slightly during the same time but then is abruptly removed. Microtransactions are forced into the game and ruin every single mode that they touch including online play while turning its audience into sports gambling addicts that have zero chance of a return for their expenses instead of just a low chance. DLC means that the series has an opportunity to simply dole out roster updates as DLC but the series refuses to do so because it's owned by a bunch of jackasses. All throughout 05 to 21 minor improvements are made in various areas of the core gameplay only for most those improvements to be removed within a few installments until Madden 21 is ultimately like Madden 06 with minor improvements in a very specific areas while 95% of the game is worse and continues to get worse every year.

    You could do a whole segment on Al Davis draft choices. He had a passion for Heisman Trophy winners, even though most Heisman winners have had less than brilliant careers in the NFL. He liked to watch the college bowl games, and would see some otherwise not brilliant college kid make one great play, and decide on the basis of that play alone to take a chance on them. And then he drafted Bo Jackson, who played full-time for the Kansas City Royals after refusing to play for the Bucs, and managed to work out a deal where Jackson played for the Raiders after the Royals season was over. Davis made some terrible picks, then would balance them with a choice like Jackson. It's well worth digging into.

    Been a raider fan all my life. As far as i know.. its crazy how this team was one of the best teams to watch every Sunday to a team of collapse. 60s - 80s raiders were the most winning team in the league with 3 superbowl titles. But in 1986, That changed the legacy of the Raiders. Al lost his mind & the league knew he was done. The 90s were interesting. Raiders were a good team to watch but couldn't beat the power house teams. Also the relocation back to Oakland did gave them some motivation but wasnt enough. But 1998 changed it all. 2000 Jon gruden led them winning their 1st afc west title since 1990 when they were in LA, 1st for Oakland since 1976. Early 2000s was perfect until once again Al became Al again. Probably in my opinion one of the worst decisions in raiders history. February 18 2002 on my birthday, dude trades jon gruden for the bucs. Gets beat in the superbowl, & team when to disaster. 2003-2005 was just the aftermath of the superbowl. 2006 the team when from collapse to diarrhea. Since then, al never found a way to bring them back . 2011 he passes away, Mark davis comes in town. 2012- 2014 was terrible. 2015 & 2016 seemed like maybe the Raiders can rise again. 2017 team falls apart. 2018 Mark brought Gruden back to Oakland to refix history.. 2019 seemed like hope. But now its 2020, a new decade. with Las Vegas as their new home, Jon Gruden has to find a way to hype up his new fans in sin city. Can jon gruden bring the Raiders back to the Commitment to Excellence & take the Raiders back to glory giving Raider nation their 4th Superbowl title? Or will it just be another collapse. Will see, stay tune.

    It sounds like a joke, but we need an early 2010s Texans collapse video: -Lose Mario Williams the year they get JJ Watt -Make it to divisional round with 3rd String QB, losing by one score to the Ravens -Ed Reed signing as a bust -Andre Johnson injury -Schaub injury/confidence loss -Arian Foster vegan fiasco/spirituality -Gary Kubiak is fried, wins SB with Broncos two years later -Texans went from 12-4 SB hopefuls to 2-14, and squandered the first round pick (Clowney) that they would eventually trade for a bag of chips

    I will never forget that Super Bowl. We anchored in the middle of the pacific so the sat signal wouldn't get disrupted because the Captain was a Raider fan. Only 2 people on the ship thought the Bucs could win and we won a LOT of bets. By halftime we were underway again and the signal never faltered so we got to see every glorious second.
