How The Predator Movies Changed Over Time

Predator is a movie that’s particularly close to my heart, I used to live with someone whose entire vocabulary was made up of quotes from Aliens, Robocop, some wrestling shows, and mostly Predator. So if you’re watching this, hi mum.
The Predator series at the moment consists of three films, with the earliest and undoubtedly the most iconic made in 1987, featuring Arnold Schwarzeneggar and Carl Weathers. The second film was released in 1990, and the third film came out a whole twenty years later in 2010. Now in 2018, a new set beween Predator 2 and Predators is scheduled for release. All the films are essentially about exactly the same thing - armed and able humans being hunted by a far better armed and seemingly far more able alien, or aliens - the Predators, or Hunters.
As a series I think it’s changed the most out those that I’ve looked at, in terms of individual films. Rocky changed a lot, but over the seven films of that series, it was kind of gradual.
Alien Resurrection is far more different to Alien, than Predators is to Predator, but the films that compose the series all occupy different places in the line of movie tones.
You’ll see what I mean shortly.
Movies Mentioned:
Alien (1979), Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990), Alien Vs Predator (2004), Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (2007), Predators (2010), The Predator (2018).

I honestly love Predator, because it's a standard "rescue the POW's" movie until an alien shows up and suddenly it's a sci-fi survival film. Only in the 80's

I basically grew up on Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Terminator 1 and 2, Robocop and Predator 1 and 2. In my opinion, Hollywood has never been able to replicate the superbness of these films. They just had some sort of magic spark bsck then which faded with time.

Predator will always have a special place in my heart. My mom recorded it on VHS back in the day but she missed the first minute or two, the scene where we see the spaceship landing on earth. So I was thrown into this awesome story about beefy guys slaying fools in the most hostile environment on earth and then - out of the blue (for me) - comes this unstoppable force, this hellish creature that bests those elite badasses. It was so goddamn awesome.

Interesting. It's been awhile and I guess I never noticed. I love Predator 2 but it's definitely riding on the nostalgia from me being a 13 year old boy at the time. Meanwhile, the original Predator is essentially a perfect film that I find myself revisiting much more frequently. I'll never forget I saw it at a sleep-over on a 17inch CRT and it had such a profound effect I stayed awake until the sun came up. I kept seeing that shimmer in the tree out the window.

Sums up The Last Jedi, it doesn't have much in it this isn't message. They don't even try to hide it, straight up in your face feminist propaganda, set in a different galaxy... because reasons. I'll be amazed if the latest Predator movie isn't message-ridden. I'll know from the trailer, lead character a white female, secondary character of some non-white male ethnicity, a white guy who's bad in some manner; how patronising to all these categories of human being. Why can't we just have good stories? Alien didn't need political narratives to make Ripley a believable character. That's why I actually quite like Predator 2, the cast make up in this regard doesn't feel forced for PC reason, wasn't an issue back then so much. Glover's character isn't superhuman, but he's certainly driven. As long as Hollywood puts leftist politics before telling good stories, movies will continue being generally god awful. The last decent movie I saw at the cinema was Dredd, but that wasn't really a Hollywood production.

I thought it was pretty satisfying finding out a bit more about the Predators and their culture during the second film. That moment when he threw the pistol to Danny Glover taken from Earth more than a hundred years in the past was a pretty badass moment. Not only for really showing off what the Predators are about (sure they hunt and kill humans gruesomely for sport, but they respect valor and feat of arms in other species, so they're very morally ambiguous) but also revealing the idea that they have been using Earth as hunting grounds for centuries undetected. I feel that they gave you just enough tidbits of information about them to make your opinion of them increase, while at the same time having them remain mysterious.

Completely agreed on Predators. I like it well enough to accept it but can't say I've revisited it that often. A big missed opportunity is that they're transplanted to an alien world, but there's hardly anything alien about it. It might as well have just taken place on Earth jungles again. By the time Predators came around, audiences kinda expected extravagantly detailed fleshed-out alien worlds. There's that twist where everyone realizes they're not on Earth, sure but it doesn't really add anything to it.

God, the backstory of the AVP movie's production would make a great video all on its own. Over a decade in development hell before Fox got a pitch that was cheap enough for them. The original intent for the longest time WAS to go with the comic book story, set in the Aliens timeframe, with multiple scripts made based on that. I honestly quite like the first AVP, but I still scratch my head as to why it would've been so much more expensive to do the original version.

I think the reason why Dillon's shot is in slow motion when he tries to hit the predator with his gun is to show that the predator has a different perception of time. When you hear the characters through the predator's helmet they really sounds like they are in slow motion. For me, it's like the predator having super good reflexes. Imagine fighting someone in slow motion while you think and act in normal speed. This makes the predator a very good hunter

Georg, this was a good video - as per usual - but I'll have to disagree on certain things. Such as the second movie having the predator(s) as less intimidating entities. Even when the predator is losing control of a situation, that is always by his own will. I mean remember, that predator wanted to come to earth, wanted a challenging hunt, wanted his own life to be at risk for the ultimate thrill. The species got the technology to level down the whole city with the equivalent of a wrist mounted tactical nuke, but that isn't the point. So when something goes differently than planned, its exactly what they wanted to experience. Yes, we could only guess about things in the first movie but that remains true in the second too, its just a new set of questions. In some ways even the latest movie continued on with the answering old questions and adding more to wonder about, and that part was admirable. What the latest one missed for me was the display of competence on the human characters while both first and second movie started with establishing the protagonists and that they're no ordinary folk. In Predators however we're told not shown that these folk could be formidable opponents to the predators. I've got sidetracked a bit :P Anyway, great video. Keep up the good work! ;)

Couldn't agree more about Predators - Adrien Brody is hard to take seriously in the role and really hard to like; the rest of the cast are also all but ciphers and stereotypes; and it had nothing much to add to the series. I'll add one more thing. You said that the predators become less interesting the more you know about them or the less they're in control. I'd say that along with that, they were almost completely neutered by the fairly anticlimactic reveal of the 'super-predators' - some misguided attempt to make something 'scarier' than the original beast. Something that completely outclasses, and wipes the floor with, the iconic version of the creature. (Similar to the Spinosaurus and the... _Indominus_ [ _hawk, ptoo_ ] in the Jurassic Park series) If that doesn't rob it of it's menace and mystique, I dunno what would.

I really feel like what made predators so unremarkable was how underdeveloped all the characters were. The first predator had a fairly large cast and you cared at least somewhat about all of them. Like you said you get about 30-40 minutes with them before the predator starts hunting them. You see how they operate, how they coordinate and the banter between them. And when they start dying, you see how they react. It really helps drives the tension when the audience knows who everyone is and that they all care about each other. So when they start getting picked off, and the team starts getting scared, it creates tension. The Dynamic of the team vs the predator takes center stage until its just the team leader vs the predator. In predators, there's almost none of that. None of the characters know who each other are and most of them just don't seem to care. If they don't care, then the audience won't care. Hence why the film is so forgettable. It does take a while before the predators start hunting them, but the time before that is really wasted on shitty character intros before they finally agree to work together. When they start dying off, its really hard to give a shit. An easy test to see if your characters are memorable is if an audience can remember their names. Predator 1 isn't perfect in this regard, as I can only remember Dutch and Dillon's names, but I remember each character with ease. With Predators I can't remember any of their names and I'm not even sure I can remember all of the characters and I've seen this movie several times. TL;DR, Predators lacks character, which makes it lack tension, which is why it's so forgettable.

Both the first film and the sequel were great and original action movies for me. The 80s jungle warfare and the 90s urban... warfare. Watched the hell out of both on VHS back then. Nothing was missing from the sequel, a completely new setting and story only expanded the original for me. Danny Glover as a cop and his whole team did a great job. As well as Gary Busey, one of the best for the ultimate covert-ops operative asshole character back at the time. Seeing Bill Paxton showing up in the movie and the Alien's skull at the end was a good tease. Good bunch of people making all those sci-fi movies, and good times.

They did one of the things that you are criticizing the movies for though, showing more of the predators culture. I happen to think that was fantastic though. I loved learning about their traditions and what makes them tick. It makes them far more interesting then just simple one-off movie monsters, and makes them into something more complicated. They still aren't good guys by any stretch, but something a little more like anti-heroes imo.

This has to be one of your best videos yet! I loved the Inspector Gadget thing at the end. That made me laugh pretty hard. The other funny thing to me is I bought the Blu-Ray trilogy of this series about a year or so ago. I watched the first two, and I have yet to pop in Predators; the third iteration. I have never seen the movie, and yet I technically own it. Then I see this video and I wonder if I'll ever break it out and watch it. I don't remember anyone ever telling me that it was something I had to see. I remember one friend telling me as he shrugged his shoulders, "It's good," and nodding his head like he needs me to agree with him to validate what he just said. That is never a good thing. Just doesn't seem like a good investment of my time. The $10 I paid was good enough for the first two films, and I suppose that's how I justify it. I thought the first one was a classic, and the second was just Predator in the Lethal Weapon universe without Mel Gibson/Riggs. That's not a bad thing, its just that the 2nd one was just above average to good. So when you stack it up against the first, it certainly loses its appeal.

Predators feels a lot like a reboot/remake since every 2 minutes there's another callback to the original film, or a scene redone beat-for-beat, not that AVPR wasn't guilty of this either. It does have some fun action, which is the one area where Predators is actually fairly creative. I view it as the moment the series entered full-on slasher B-movie territory, unapologetically schlocky and equal parts entertaining / stupid.

Your point at the end makes perfect sense: expansion films can add or answer questions but sometimes they’re disappointing or not done well when so much effort was put into the original characters.
