How the NRA Shot Itself in the Foot

The National Rifle Association had long been known as one of the most powerful lobbying groups in America. But at the peak of its power, this well-funded ally of the Republican Party has found itself besieged by scandal and legal challenges that could permanently change how it operates.

Because there isn't a platform for the original NRA's message. Anyone that wants to learn how to use a gun can, it's near universal access with cheap rental fees from gun ranges. Gun safety is also pretty universally taught. There's no concerted effort needed for what the NRA was originally. Late stage capitalism took care of it.

The Second Amendment may be about the right to firearms possession. However, whenever any politician or lobbyists propose “gun control / regulations” ... the NRA goes crazy with ridiculous rhetoric. So why is this concept not better communicated?

@@WannabeWoodsman A few did, notably Jefferson and the Antifederalists. He was staunchly opposed to the formation of a large national military, especially a navy, on account of the cost and the aforementioned ideological concerns, one of which was that he associated large militaries with the monarchies of Europe, who tended to get into a lot of wars with them. He was a man who definitely thought more highly of farming than commerce, views not shared by more northern founders. In fact, Jefferson's idea of a US Navy was "a citizen militia, but on the sea." When he became president, Jefferson likely changed his views on whether to have a navy in the first place. He wasn't a fan of the navy, but recognized that such a navy would be necessary to conduct a war against the Barbary States who harbored pirates that attacked among other nations, American ships, and that he was even less of a fan of paying them the tribute they demanded. And the performance of the militias in the subsequent War of 1812 was... mixed. Very mixed. They did reasonably well in less direct actions and when heavily backed by regular units, but did poorly against British regulars. America would continue to use militia forces well into the 19th century, mainly in the Civil War (when you're shooting at each other) and in the Indian Wars, but there was no debate after that as to the need for a proper military by any of the founders. The Canadian experience of militia units was much better, being backed by the British Army much of the time, and didn't think they needed a professional army until the Great War, when debacles like Sam Hughes, the Shield Shovels, and the Ross Rifle came into their own.

The teaching staff is so poorly paid they often need subsidized housing. And that's just Big Academe. The same flow of money is seen in the Church where arch-Bishops live like royalty. And then there's the ARTS. Top stars are so over-paid that they feel guilty. So they preen and posture to the public -- and STILL take the Big Bucks. Many Talking Heads hectoring you on the boob tube are pulling down $1,000,000 per MONTH. In all of the above cases -- the players want EVEN MORE.

AR = Automatic Rifle -- that's strictly military issue. No automatic rife has been used in any of the recent horrific atrocities -- as the criminally insane can't get their hands on one. You've been influenced by HOLLYWOOD film. The gun violence crafted there is absurdist -- as in over -the-top. There have been a few cases of automatic weapons used in fights with police. Fortunately they are freakishly rare. Common armed robberies are conducted with handguns, nothing like an AK-47.

With your Internet nic I'm assuming that the absolute blood bath of Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia and Maoist China are news to you. All three started// or were enabled by -- the government seizing private guns. In all three states, in no time flat the government turned ITS guns upon their citizens -- who died by the THOUSAND... then MILLIONS. America was FOUNDED when the British government came to seize ball and shot from its citizens. By doing so, it was making the frontier DEFENSELESS. And that frontier was only a half-day's walk from Boston. All other rights flow from the barrel of a gun. It's the way of man. Before that, swords and spears. BTW, criminals LOVE swords over guns. Prior to gun ownership, no street was ever safe. Swords don't need ammo, are quiet and, all in all, pretty cheap.

That seems appropriate since when you purchase a gun the people most likely to be shot with it is the purchaser (and his family). Owning a gun greatly increases the odds you will be shot to death- especially by your own hand.

I joined as a life member when I was 19 back when it was a legitimate organization. I now find myself embarrassed to have done so and sincerely hope it dies. It was once a proud organization for gun safety, shooting sports and hunting and morphred into money hungry leeches who care nothing for the safety of society!

It’s hilarious to think that a few civilians with guns could stand a chance against a tyrannical government with trillions in military assets. Like, can’t we all just admit people who have guns don’t think the need them to protect themselves, they just want to keep their guns because it makes them feel powerful.

@Cat Magic That may be the way YOU see gun owners. I would say the people calling to disarm everyone so THEY can have comfort in the illusion of security are bullies and lunatics. Someone who takes comfort in preparing for the worst, and hoping for the best is rational and logic minded. By being a responsible, trained, gun owner you take responsibility for the lives and well being of you and your loved ones. I've only met a few people in 20 years of being exposed to guns that I thought "jeez this guy is a loose cannon." and it was usually dementia sufferer. But liberals have no qualms about putting weapons of mass destruction at the fingertips of a dementia patient so I don't know why guns are such a big issue tp them.

Patsy, your rights were given to you by your creator. You have rights because you are human. The US Constitution recognizes those rights and commits the government to defending those rights. Regular citizens may also defend their, and your, rights. With force if necessary.
