What if Len Bias didn't die two days after being drafted by the Boston Celtics? How would the NBA potentially look today? Let's take a swing at figuring out the impossible.

Link to Len Bias shirt: www.iansrzdsn.com/product/len-bias Sorry for the poor quality of footage in this vid, not a lot of choices when dealing with college basketball in the 80s. Anyways, in this vid I talk about how the NBA could've looked if Len Bias didn't die in three periods; immediately after he was drafted, the 90s, and today. What do you think it would've looked like if he lived? The Celtics would've won at least 2-3 more championships. Larry would've played until 1995 and retire as the greatest of all time. Len would give Jordan a real run, and even steal one or two titles in the early 90's from Jordan. This in turn would have made Jordan try even harder. He would not retire in '94. We'd probably see Bulls winning 3-7 championships from from the early 90's to 2000. MJ would retire as the greatest, but only slightly ahead of Larry, and he wouldn't have come back for the wizards, but instead stayed on the Bulls until somwhere between 2000-2003. Len would go down as top 3 with Bird and Jordan, Lebron before Lebron. The butterfly effect would be so far reaching and seemingly random, at this point everything would be different. I'm pretty sure Boston would have gotten great players coming over (like Shaq going there to play with Len Bias to give Jordan a run instead of the Lakers... Hakeem still doesn't get the respect he deserves. It's fun to think of the possibilities. Let's play this out in 2K.

The Celtics were 67-15, had just won the NBA title, and made themselves better in the offseason (with the addition of Len Bias). That lasted about two days. Bias and Jordan would've been rivals for a decade and a half in the Eastern Conference. Instead, once Magic Johnson & Larry Bird retired, Jordan had the league all to himself.

Something that should also be discussed: I'm thinking if Bias doesn't die, Jordan doesn't retire in '93. A big reason why he did was that he didn't have any competition in the top. Now assuming that Bias pans out how we expect him to, we could see more full years of Jordan. Anyway, great video Dom, really thought-provoking

Brandon Polo that's why I say part of. That was something that contributed. (If my memory serves) I saw in an interview somewhere where Jordan talked to Phil Jackson after Jordan's dad died, and they tried to list challenges that he had not done in the NBA. They couldn't find any. Now, you're right in that another big part was his dad dying, but I feel like something that made it easier for him to leave was the fact that he was out of challenges

As good as the 87 Lakers were, the hobbled Celtics won 2 of the games and almost a third. Len Bias would have been good enough to get them two more games. The rest of the Celtics would have been fresher as well. The 86 Celtics were always considered better than the 87 Lakers , so Bias would have kept the rest of them fresher in 87 as well as other teams having to adjust to a 3rd major scoring option up front.

I like your overall commentary. 2 Things though. Bird say he would have retired the next season after Bias was drafted. So, he would have played one season with bias. Bird says his pain was constant and excruciating. The greats like Bird don't usually linger. He says he stayed because Red asked him too because of the bias tragedy. There's just NO WAY Bird would have made it past 1992. His style of play was ALL OUT. If someone of his emotional caliber can't play the way they want, they're not going to get excited. That leads to lackluster performances. Birds style was just so self destructive. I agree with most of the other stuff though. I think the Bias/Jordan rivalry would have been historic for sure. Jordan Just couldn't win before receiving his degree from the University of Larry Bird. Imagine if Bias had been there on the positive side of that university? Even for just a year? I think you're right about the 1987 NBA Finals. The Celtics could have taken that one with Bias...

I don't know if it was his actual plan. But, as the mono-e-log suggests him and McHale might have gotten more rest is a viable thought. That said, in an interview with Bill Simmons on February 8th 2012, Larry was asked if Len Bias had lived, what would Larry have done and he stated without hesitation, "I would have retired the very next year." But, that's 20 years later with the benefit of hindsight. Larry's competitive nature probably wouldn't have allowed him to walk away from a chance to help Bias learn and win another title. He says that now with all the aches and pains he's been cursing everyday for 20 years. "Why didn't I quit sooner?" Who knows? He did say it though...

Unfortunately this video failed to address an even more serious issue, even if (God Bless his soul) Bias did not pass away, he may not have made it beyond a short span in the NBA. First off, his lack of discipline to say no toward hard drugs will definitely make an impact, and also the influence of his surrounding friends. By all means he may have been the one who OD-ed without being persuaded by his pals, OR his pals may have goaded him to take more. Whichever the exact scenario, we will not know what exactly happened as he is no longer here to tell the story, regardless of what those around him are saying when he died OD-ing. So my point is that Bias unless he woke up his idea, will not have made it in the NBA due to the inherent problems with hard drugs and those "friends" he had around him.

They'd probably still be as dominant, but hey, you never know. More or Less wins with Bias leads to different draft picks in the future altering the timeline of the NBA. Trades and Draft Picks in sports are a very touchy topic. What if the Timberwolves passed up on Johnny Flynn and picked Steph 6th overall. He'd probably be playing on the timberwolves and if not, he would have never thought of going to Golden State. Steve Kerr was the GM of the Suns and the dude is from Ohio and grew up in North Carolina. The man would have no business being in the middle of California. That just goes to show how a decision made 8 years ago can affect the path of a player's career, but more importantly, the fate of the league!

I just wanted to say thank you for posting such an awesome video, you are so right. I was 21 in 1988 and I remember when this happened he was so close to my age and I was such a basketball nut my whole life. It really gave me a lot of thinking back then. All my friends called me Larry Bird my whole life, I grew up in East Oakland in the 70s so I was like the only white guy, everyone would always do the commentary sounding like Howard Cosel. Len Bias, man I haven't thought of him in a long long time. really sad day when that happened. What a loss for all of us, and his family. RIP Len

He had to compete and overcome this habit in the first place BEFORE becoming a legend, star, all-star, or even an regular NBA player... Differ him from Chris Washburn, Roy Tarpley, Sugar Ray Richardson, etc. before making such theories, please..

Bruce Wilkins That doesn't mean he would've been a star. A lot of players were great in college but not in the NBA. Tbh it would be more likely he would've just been a role player with a few all star appearances in his prime. Him being the GOAT though? Unlikely.

Dr.CookiesNeedLoveLikeEverthingDoes the funny thing about the argument that Bias was "weak minded" and never would have been great is that one of the most crucial players of that era, Dennis Rodman, was a non stop partying drug taking alcoholic and you guys are all in love with how great he was and he's got the rings to back up his great resume. How many guys tried coke a few times and nothing ever went wrong but Len was at a party where this mysterious super potent blow ends up in his system and drops him dead.

Celtics had bird, mchale,Parrish, ainge, and then add bias LeBron before lebron James. Dennis ain't arrive until jordan second 3 peat and Dennis was a piston still for jordan first. I believe if len bias never died then LeBron James would've been non existent.

You should have mentioned Reggie Lewis, another 80's Celtic draftee who was killed by that epidemic. He averaged 28/4/4/2.4s in the 92 playoffs and was Jordan's toughest cover in his era. Killer length and quickness, great defender and an unreal jumper. He also had the clutch gene. Too skilled, long and athletic to be contained. Only weakness was he did not attempt 3's. It broke my heart when he died.
