Philippines was the hongkong, or the singapore before wwii.. the progress of the philippines was typical for most countries that just received their independence. until the late 60s before Marcos, we were the leader in Asia with agriculture, films (asias hollywood) and economy. Mean while the Philippines struggled on its own and to add insult to injury or Pain to most Filipinos who fought with the Americans, President Truman did not commit to their Promise of sustaining or helping the Filipino Veterans, rather abandoned. I am not sure if the recognition was finally given during Obama administration but even if so, only just a few of them remain due to age while most of them had Died. Even today there are so many other Nationalities who married Filipinos, Italians, Germans, Nigerians, Eastern Europeans and Middle Easter countries....so many to mention that is why It is one country that I could mention who can adapt easy to other cultures of the world. Lending a helping hand, hospitality it’s in Filipino culture. What’s more endearing, in my opinion is our sense of forgiveness. I saw an NHK documentary how the late president Elpidio Quirino, putting his personal feelings on one side granted pardon to Japanese war criminals despite him witnessing the death of his wife and three children at the hands of Japanese soldiers. It was a decision that was very difficult for him as an individual. Can you imagine? How does one get over, or how does one forgive such a personal tragedy? In a 1953 speech he said:“I have my remaining children, and their children to follow. I am not going to allow them to inherit feelings of revenge,”

I read about the Philippine army stayed in Korea during the Korean war to finish the job while many other countries left. The Pilipinos stayed shoulder to shoulder with the Americans and fight fiercely against the communists. That's how Pilipinos are. We're dependable up to the end. We don't let our friends down. Sadly, the South Koreans doesn't teach their young children exactly what the Pilipinos contributed to their freedom.

this video crossed my feed. as a grade school student in the 1970s, we sang Hava Nagilah in school camping activities, girl scout bonfire activities. we even sang it in catholic church after mass! then after 40years, I learned , only then, that there was/were Jewish settlement in the Phils. So, it is a discovery that that was how this song became known in school those days! of course, this song was no longer sung in the late 80s, esp with the advent of cable esp MTV in the 90s. surprising how i see now that a lot of foreigh bloggers have featured it since a few years ago.

While Quezon had wanted to bring tens of thousands of Jews to the Philippines and permanently settle them on the island of Mindanao, his efforts were stymied by the US government, who limited him to accept 1,000 Jews a year, over a 10 year period.

Today, after many years it’s funny to hear that Spain discovered the Philippines. I had an old Spanish friend who told me exactly that and to her surprise when I told her; “ It couldn’t be that because the Filipinos were already there long before the Spaniards arrived ”. It’s true, discovering it from the Eurpean point of view but not from the natives who were already there.

Wow I’m Filipina but I know so little about this, i can’t even recall this in history subjects when I was at school, or i might have been asleep during the time it was being taught 😊. Truly amazing though, now I’d like to know more. Its a fact that we Filipinos are always ready to lend a helping hand at any given time, no matter their situations in life if you visit a Filipino household and stay for the night as guest even if they are poor they will always give you the best things they have, they will give their own bed to make you feel welcome and make you feel comfortable, even if it means the family will have to sleep on the floor, that’s just how Filipinos we are, friendly, kind and hospitable .😊 Thanks for this video Lucy & George.😍
