TBH the only characters who really "suck" with zero redeeming qualities are Jehan, Phoebus, and the king. Everyone else has a fairly good reason to act the way they do: Quasimodo is rightfully angry at a world that treats him like garbage, while Esmeralda is a literal child who's been forced into this frightening and awful situation. Even Frollo, who sets everything in motion with his despicable acts, is emotionally stunted from living in a tower since he was a teen.

I don't know if this is true or not but I heard the animators working on Hunchback weren't happy that Frollo was rewritten as a judge instead of an archdeacon so they designed him to look religious as possible without the higherups finding out until after the movie came out.

@@fizzy69o.0 They gave him the feel of a cleric from medieval times, since this takes place in the 1400s. If you take a peak at the clothing worn by religious figures back then you can see the inspiration and of course there are some slightly modern elements but there’s a good reason a lot of people assume Frollo was a man of the church just by his clothing. Back in the day the priests wore all black, which works out as it almost looks villainous.

Kinda weird that phoebes is a nice guy in the movie when he’s actually a groomer, player, and manipulator.

It’s to contrast both Quasimodo and Frollo. Frollo sees Esmeralda as a demon and Quasimodo sees her as an angel, but, at least in the movie, Phoebus is the only one of the three to see her as a good person with normal human flaws. It really helps the story, in my opinion. Otherwise, he’s just Frollo 2.0.

It’s really not that weird that they made bad guys nice, they’ve done it a hundred times or the entire opposite more recently. In Tarzan the Disney movie Kerchak is his father, in the actual book Kerchak is the villain.

In the stage play of the Disney film, Phoebus is written as a soldier struggling with PTSD. He took the job as Frollo's captain of the guard because it's a cushy post that will keep him far away from where he never wants to go back to, the front lines. But as Frollo descends into madness, Phoebus becomes more and more uncomfortable with what he's asked to do, hunt down Esmeralda, until he finally can't take it anymore and defies Frollo's orders in the scene where he refuses to burn down a building (the miller's house in the film, while the stage show changed it to a brothel that regularly gave refuge to the Romani). Stage show Phoebus is a nice blend of who he is in the book and film: He's not the all-out slimeball the book casts him as, but he's not the bland neutral guy Disney originally portrayed him as, either.

@@AliciaNyblade Stage Play has the best versions of the characters, it’s so nuanced and detailed and smart that I often lament that it didn’t get much attention and become huge like Lion King or BaTB. The songs hit so hard, the gargoyles are just illusions and not annoying, there are barely any modern or really any jokes, the ending is so distressing that I’m somewhat shocked Disney did it at all, and it takes more risks than even the movie. Frollo is fleshed out and almost sympathetic at times given that Quasi is actually related to him, Esmeralda’s people are called Romani, Phoebus is not perfect he drinks and sleeps around but he has a good heart, Esmeralda has more level interactions with Frollo instead of all just creeper vibes with them actually talking semi normally and him even inviting her to prayer service, and Quasi is actually semi deaf which he is clearly not in the film but he is semi blind in both. So many clever decisions, so many guttural songs and moments, so much despair and yet the tiniest hope of “someday”. I think Victor Hugo would be happy with it.

It does! I saw the show at La Jolla Playhouse and, in my opinion, it's the perfect blend of the book and the Disney film. I love that, for instance, they changed one of the most famous lyrics--"Who is the monster and who is the man?"--to "What makes a monster and what makes a man?" It shows that the adapters understand how we aren't all just one thing, monster or man, but circumstances and our reactions to them, or even simply how others perceive us, cast us in those roles.

@@SingingSealRiana The way Frollo uses the word “sanctuary”, turns my blood cold. He is so desperate and sincere, it is pathetic and depressing and given his backstory it only makes him more tragic and ironic. For moments you sympathize with him, we see him laugh and truly love people, Quasi actually is related to him in the musical, and his descent is a slow burn not a truly insidious person from the get go. He tries to raise Quasi in an appropriate way, to be a better version of his brother, in this way he is like a true Gothel. He really is trying to protect Quasimodo from the worlds evils even if said evils aren’t evil at all. It is scarier because for half a second you are manipulated by Frollo too until he breaks and becomes obsessive. When he says he wants to give Esmeralda sanctuary we all know what he means and what’s horrifying about it all is that he believes he’s right, he’s delusional. When he dies though I stead of feeling like it’s a victory it feels like more tragedy. Quasi looks upon his master, his mentor, his father and the woman he loves and says “Here lies everything I have ever loved.” That line alone gives Frollo more depth than any villain.

Except for Frollo He's the evil monster who believes that all the horrific and inhuman things that he does are justified and God's works especially as a PRIEST 😡

Pretty accurate overall, but here's some corrections: 1. Claude adopted Quasi when he was 20, not 16. He took care of Quasi for 16 years, which makes their book ages to be 36 for claude, not 35, and 20 for Quasi (or 19 going on 20 if you want maximum accuracy) 2. Phoebus doesn't knock out jehan, jehan just passes out from drinking 3. Jehan doesn't die from molten lead; he tries to kill Quasi with a crossbow, but since it wasn't a fatal injury, Quasi strikes back by throwing him off notre dame 4. In the ending, only Quasi's skeleton is described as crumbling to dust, showing how he could not survive apart from esmeralda 5. Jehan doesn't start out as a thief, unless you count all the times he bummed money off of claude. He only joins the court of miracles after his visit to the tavern with phoebus. Before then he's not an outcast but a fairly popular scholar, albeit terrible at studying

And here's my correction Frollo did not slip into Esmeralda's bed in her sleep She woke after she heard something outside and she saw Frollo's horrendous face from a small window before he broke into her room, lustfully pressing himself on her, biting her shoulders and begged her to "pity and love him" but she kept screaming at him "Begone monster!! Begone assassin!! Let me go!! Begone demon!! And once she felt she was about to be r**** by him, she screamed for help but no one answered for her help And that's when she blew Quasimodo's whistle for his help before he comes to her rescue Even as the maddened Frollo was about take the knife to kill Quasimodo in order to assault her again, Esmeralda grabbed the knife and threatened to kill Frollo and challenged him to touch her again....but he doesn't Filled with embarrassment, jealousy and rage, he brutally knocked down Quasimodo with a kick and ran away as he swears "NO ONE WILL EVER HAVE HER IF I CAN'T!!" That scene is really scary and very messed up😱

I love how Disneys Hunchback changed the idea of religion and belief in the movie. The book was clearly anti religious, while the movie shows 3 sides of religion, the individuals who are indifferent and live freely (townspeople and Ramoni), the people who follow it for it brings them hope when they need it (Esmeralda and Quasimodo), and those who abuse its power for there own benefit, harming those around them (Frollo). The townspeople and Ramoni are not wrong for not following it, nor are Wsmerleda and Quasimodo wrong for following it. The only one wrong is the person using the power for evil. This is why I think Frollo was changed from a priest to a judge, for the message is stronger if not a priest is the villian, but a corrupt man who chose this life, chose this power, and forces it onto others not cause it’s his job but because he refuses to let go of his ego and greed. Not everyone is a priest but everyone is a human being, and there are people like him in the world. Bosses who use there power to harass there workers, fire those who stand up to them.

I think the reason for the change is mainly that folks who do believe have trouble accepting that fellow believers, even the ones who attain power are only people acting on their own desires. Fictions that acknowledge that are generally rejected out of hand for that same reason. I don't really think its helpful to anyone, to make believe that they stop being people with egos for the subjective nature of any one belief. Consequently, I think that if a mainstream Disney movie had had a corrupted religious leader from a still mainstream religion as a villain they'd have had more moral guardians at their door than they do now over recolors & A.I.

Nah, if anything making him not a priest weakens it. The reason why they changed him is obvious they had to do it or Christians would have rioted. Maybe even some Christian writers on the crew offended by the idea. Priests are human beings too.

The book wasn't even anti-religious, at the time of writing Victor Hugo was some sort of agnostic and years later portrayed Christianity in a positive light with Les Mis.

The novel was a love letter to the cathedral and is the single reason that it was “rediscovered and valued” in the decades after the French Revolution where it was damaged and neglected. Hugo’s romanticization of the medieval Paris around the Cathedral inspired people to restore it and save the building and love it the way he did. In many ways our love for this one gothic cathedral is really thanks to the legacy of this novel. It’s why the French government is willing to put forth the HUGE effort and funds to rebuild it once again exactly as it was. And that is a truly beautiful thing 😊

Fun facts: In the book Quasimodo is whipped but in the Disney movie, tomatoes are thrown at him Quasimodo's statue friebds in the movie are called Victor and Hugo

The ropes thrown onto him in the Disney film were meant to symbolize whips and the tomatoes almost looks like blood, so everything they did in that scene still evokes torture, shame, horror, brutality.

I do, too, especially since it was brought up in the video that the book's original title references not only Notre Dame itself but Esmeralda, too. I'd never thought of that. And given that a lot of adaptations haven't exactly been kind to the Romani culture (which, sadly, stems from the book, as Hugo himself had anti-Romani prejudices), it'd be awesome to see a version that did it justice. Maybe the first 20 minutes, half hour could focus on Esmeralda and her family, and then we see her dancing within sight of Notre Dame and--"Oh, she's THAT Esmeralda!" and the rest of the story unfolds with the familiar plot beats, but from her perspective. I also think it'd be great to see an adaptation that portrays Quasimodo as he starts off in the book. So many versions, including the Disney film, paint him as longing to go outside for his day "out there". But in the book, he starts off very angry, blaming the people of Paris for his confinement, and when he goes down for the Festival of Fools, it's more of a lashing out: "Oh, you guys want the ugliest face in Paris? How's this?" It'd be great to see his character arc start there and then as he meets and falls in love with Esmeralda, he softens and realizes that not all "normal" people are assholes.

By far one of the darkest Disney films ever and I love it for it

I remember when I first watched Disney hunchback of Notre Dame when I was a kid and after it was over I said out loud "what the hell did I just watch".

Just like the movie, Frollo is killed by poor building construction. That's why the true lesson is historical building preservation.

For the age thing with Esmeralda and the men, keep in mind that at 16 people were considered to be well into adulthood by that point in the Medieval Period. Hell, some were even married at 13 or 14. And, because of the high maternal death rates because of said early marriages, it also wasn't uncommon for a man in his 30s or even 40s to marry a teenage girl. Yes, that's still pretty gross, but for that time it was the standard. Yeah, I'm glad that there are at least laws in place to prevent stuff like that, even if it doesn't fully stop grown-ass people from hitting on people underage.

Even if marrying younger was more common during that time, Frollo and even Phoebus were aware that they were too old for Esmeralda, as they both sometimes addressed her as “child”. The tone/narration, Frollo and even Phoebus himself remark on how childlike Esmeralda is, especially when it comes to her love for Phoebus.

I've loved The Hunchback of Notre Dame since I saw the Disney version as a kid, and while that version is still my favorite, I liked the original book as well. The stage musical is also great (combining the Disney film with the original book) and I'm thrilled I got to see it live.

My introduction to this story was the Disney film (it came out when I was eight), so when I first read the book at 13, I was NOT prepared for how dark it got, especially the ending, but I loved it. I'm now a huge Victor Hugo fan and, if you love this story, I recommend his other novel, "The Man Who Laughs". It's about a disfigured clown and a blind girl who perform a traveling show in the English countryside, and though their life is harsh, it's happy because they're in love. But things get complicated when the clown realizes he's actually the long-lost son of a lord and Queen Anne's court wants to restore him to his father's titles. Great stuff.

Love the shout out to the musical Notre Dame de Paris. Notre Dame de Paris's song "Libérés" is literally my ringtone.

I bet everyone else expected that Quasimodo was going to get Esmeralda since Disney always usually has the main protagonist getting their love interests, yet she loved Phoebus than Quasimodo accepted and respected her for that, however there's a sequel where he meets Madeline so that's like a second chance for romance which works out great for him.

Honestly... Disney did a swell job for the adaptation... yeah, it's not AS tragic, but... acceptable cuts for a "think of the children" version. Still... Frollo is SUCH a beautiful character in the book, it's deep, complex, interesting... the movie? Just another monothematic villain like the rest "MONOTHEMATIC?" Maybe not the best word for him, but think about it: all [main] Disney villains are all evil from start to finish! We have 2 exections in Edgar that we SEE being good at the start before greed gets him and Gantu being just a mean but good cop. Frollo is not one of those exceptions, tho... FROM THE BOOK "Quasimodo loved Frollo so much, he would have jumped from the tallest guille if he asked him to" "Frollo was so happy for a second chance at fatherhood". Movie "Stay here, ugly son of a gipsy" DUDE! I get it wouldn't be nice to see father and son fight for the same girl, but still... at least the part where he still say "I'm a man of curch, but I find ALCHEMY (the MAGIC-SCIENCE to discover the stone that turns led into GOLD) very interesting to study" In a era were PRESUMED WITCHES ARE HANGED FOR MUCH LESS, THIS MAN OF GOD JUST SAID "I find magic-science to get rich quite interesting". FIND ME ANOTHER FICTIONAL PRIEST MORE INTERESTING THAN THIS ONE! I FRICKEN DARE YOU! Or the fact that: Movie Frollo: "I'll hide this... MONSTER from everyone" Book Frollo: "You see how judgy people are just because you are ugly. Let me tell you... SCREW THEM and their backtalks. RISE YOUR HEAD and don't let them get to you". DUDE! I'd much would like to see the villain being still a nice guy. Even if racist against gypsies, MOSTLY for their pagans beliefs, he... kinda have a point. Take the classic "their kind is all the same", just bigot talks and nothing more, not in his case: Esmeralda is LITERALLY the only exception, and it has a reason: she is not a gypsy, she was KIDNAPPED by them when she was a baby! The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in one character... movie: "we just want the Bad, thanks." I heard tho that Disney did a theatrical musical much more near the original story, down to the grim ending and... Disney, do what you DIDN'T DO with the Lion King: USE THE MUSICAL VERSION FOR THE REMAKE!

One of my favorite Disney movies, the book was great as well, and the whole soundtrack gives me goosebumps every time I listen

I will say that this is one of the adaptations where I prefer the movie over the book. The characters are better and more grounded (especially Phoebus who is my favorite in the movie and in the musical version) Great summary!

I mean it exists about 10 times and one of those is legitimately Disney and if you can believe it it’s way better and even more of a shock it should be up for free on KZread.

I read a version of hunchback of notre dame where it’s all told in the same way however Phoebus is portrayed in a better and more tragic light where he actually love esmeralda however when frollo stabs Phoebus he goes into a small coma and wakes up with amnesia where he forgets all about Esmeralda and goes back to his evil fiancé (funny he always cheats in both versions tho) and he still watches Esmeralda death still not taking the hint that he used to love her I think it’s a small funny change but it definitely changes the context of the book

Ngl Frollo is probably the only character who is more evil in the Disney version cuz of his much higher position and authority which enabled him to harm much more people than his book version did

Love your videos!! Hunchback is one of my favorite stories, it’s one of my favorite Disney movies and I also cosplay Esmeralda!! It’s worth mentioning the way she was tortured to make her “Confess.” They put her foot into a boot that crushes her foot. She screams out in pain and “Confesses.”

He really is and the Disney musical finds a nice balance between both the animation and the book, he clearly wants to party and get drunk and get laid but he’s also a good person. He pays for women to accompany him to bed but he treats them decently, he has PTSD from the war so when he comes home to relax he’s immediately upset to be thrown into another war. It’s a good middle ground.

Why would it be called that though? Quasimodo is literally born with multiple physical disabilities, deafness and blindness in one eye amongst them, but dysmorphia is the want to belong in another body, at least to put it in simple terms. Oh I’m not saying you’re information is wrong it’s just an odd choice. Quasimodo means half formed so maybe that’s why? But if they wanted a character who suited that better it could have been Ariel. The symbol for trans people is a mermaid I believe. Just late night thoughts lol

Love the story but man it's depressing I've seen some original movies and though a lot weren't accurate (one killed quasi off at the end) I cried

While the changes to Pheobus may be contentious, Disney Quasi is an 100% improvement. You could have left all the other characters the same and just changed Quasi, and his motivations would still have made for a more concise story and message, and that's because they changed him from a beacon of unrequited love, to unconditional love. The thesis of Quasi in the book is that his love is everlasting while everyone else's was carnal in nature... but ultimately his love is still born from superficial reasons. On top of that, him not groping her at every chance is not the same as respecting her boundaries, eternal unrequited love is not noble, its creepy, it implies she HAS to choose someone and that no one would ever help her otherwise. That creates a major conflict where she's damned for nothing else than being a pretty teenager, but that her only salvation would be... from being a pretty teenager... As a side note, carnal love isn't terrible either if its consensual. Having Quasi more focused on seeing his own injustices inflicted on someone else is GOD TIER recontextualization. One, it lets Esmereldas beauty become of reflection of Quasi's own self hatred. Its not just seeing someone lose their rights, its "What, but they're pretty and capable, they don't deserve to be locked up or beaten like me", But in reality he wants that same freedom, and in a weird way seeing someone he thinks is better than him being treated the same way makes him realize hes not an edge case. The system is fucked not him. God that movie is fire... pun kind of intended.

i honestly prefer the original story, over the disney fied rubbish we were given. it's not a kids story or family film .. it's an adults only story.

@@SingingSealRiana just like many others vandalized folklore, stories, and legends from the old past, disney destroyed them all with its "family friendly" methods. these tales were never meant to be for kids.. EVER!

Tbh where I live we study this book thoroughly in school alongside a few other Victor Hugo novels so i wouldn't say its an adult-only story despite its dark themes

Definitely prefer Disney, even the gargoyles, over the original

Thank you for saying that. I think that the novel is a masterpiece, BUT I prefer the Disney version. It was made perfectly, one of my favorite movies. And I wish Disney would stand more behind their own version. When it comes to a musical (or - please not - live action movie) they think they must return to the novel because they think it would be "better". I don't think that. The Disney musical would have run for more years otherwise, in my view.

I had the book when I was young. And in the book Esmeralda was actually a S worker. In the french version (I'm french) she knows what Phoebus are doing and actually ACCEPT to let Frollo look.

Yeah for real what are you on? I’ve never heard any historian even mention that even in passing and I’ve also read the original book. It is such a gross misunderstanding that Esme is a street walker just because she “dresses inappropriately”. She dances for money, not sleeps for money.
