How the Celtics finally “slowed down” Steph Curry | NBA Finals Game 5 analysis
Спорт
Why did Steph Curry suddenly have a bad scoring game? What did Boston do differently in Game 5? This film room study details Coach Ime Udoka's adjustments to Steph Curry, what that meant for the Warriors offense, along with the defensive performances of Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson that helped Golden State slow down Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to take a 3-2 lead in the NBA Finals.

Friendly reminder, Steph had a college game where he scored zero points because he got double teamed full court the entire game. The man was willing to let his teammates take advantage of it and they end up winning the game because of it. His unselfishness hasn't changed all these years. The team winning has always been his priority, not his ego. It's so rare to see that for someone that had his level of success and it just really makes him different.

Its more like a consequence of when you get the Celtics at high turnovers and not having the offensive output to match when the Warriors are simply balling out. Its been the Celtics weakness in the playoffs where Smart is main culprit but more so in the Finals, the Jays have the real offenders. Brown's 5 chokes in the last game is egregious considering how shaky his handles are. Tatum has 95 turnovers so far in the postseason but his offensive output outside of the EC series have been absolutely slowed down. He's settling and when scorers like him do that, you know he's not going to kill you down the stretch. The Celtics tried to bend the Warriors on defense but never really broke them. Steph broke the Celtics defense in game 4 and they never recovered after that. The Celtics have had two bad 4th quarters in the last two games and I think that is how it ends.
I remember seeing several comments saying steph could go 0-10 and still be the best player on the court. Well, it kind of happened

I feel very similarly, this stuff is great! I have been waiting for someone to articulate the change in coverage on Steph, because I thought I was noticing some traps and super high drop coverage in Game 5... but I'm not an expert so I wasn't sure. This all makes so much sense now, because now as expected, in Game 5 the paint and drive game for the Warriors opened up big time... precisely what Boston initially tried to avoid earlier in the series. I feel though that Boston should've STARTED with this strategy, and maybe moved away to their earlier series strategy later in the series. Since now, after a slow start for most of the role players and Klay... the supporting cast feels more ready to take advantage of their increased opportunities, now that they have shifted their focus to stopping Steph more strongly.

It's great to see in this video how much love was given to Klay for his performance in game 5 outside of his important and timely 3 point shots. His positioning, anticipation and switching on defense was crucial to slowing down Boston in the first half. While the best player scoring and rebounding wise was Wiggins, Klay was also an important piece for the W when Steph was off. Props to the Celtics for taking 2 games away from GS, but I definitely believe GS is the better team in my opinion. We'll see what happen, series isn't over.

And this is what the greats do. They find a way to beat you regardless of circumstance. Trap/blitz curry? That unlocks draymon on the short roll for 4 on 3s. Play man to man defence? You risk curry going nuclear. Spend extra resources to take curry out of the play entirely, you then have to contend with the spacing between Wiggs, Pool and Klay. This is what makes the Warriors offence SO hard to guard. So many weapons combined with high IQ, selfless players who move the ball around. If it doesn't look that special anymore (compared to say, 2015) that's because -every team is now trying to be the Warriors-. Curry don't care about accolades, nor does Klay or Dray. They only want to win.
Wiggins has really stepped up with all this attention being put on Steph. What I like most though is that it seems he took Game 3 personal and has since become the Warriors top rebounder by far. Nice story for him, talk about a career turnaround.

9 three attempts for curry is extremely low. I'm a warriors fan and they very clearly slowed his scoring down. Part of him being off is him unable to find his rhythm because they are focusing so much of their defense on him. He had very few clean open looks and he had a few desperation heaves that he only takes when he is frustrated.
I love your analysis. Opened my eyes to how good Wiggins was defensively on top of his offense. I was very frustrated at coach udoka and tatum in the 4th quarter for not intitating more ball movement as he kept losing isolations.

while I GENERALLY agree with you guys and I think Ben would too (they didnt make him 0-9- and he played somewhere between pretty well and very well outside of that), they DID change up the D and it DID make him think about his selection a bit imo.... he had those couple extra extra deep 2016 regular season type early shot clock launches against what could be called "the raised drop" and that was a consequence of of course A- him taking a shot at creating momentum like he does but B- him recognizing they were giving him a thirty footer but might faceguard and double beyond that... whereas before he basically could get a deep stepback off ANY P&R any time in the shot clock... so they DID affect him at least some (he COULD have made those but it was a bit of a new selection process). The great thing is we won! So we both have the advantage of being able to make adjustment (that they cant fully prepare for) AND B- guys got going and we got one more win.

Bruh and why do you think he shot inconsistently off open looks? Thats because he was chased down the entire game after 5 games already. Especially since the Celtics are big and Curry's conditioning is great, he's still 34 and that will take away your legs. Point being, thats exactly what the Celtics wanted to happen. To not just keep Curry from scoring but to tire him out as well. It's not a coincidence that he finished about all his layups and midrange shots, but missed his 3's.

Pretty much. Every "How Celtics stop player" video has me scratching my head.
And this my friends is why Steph is the best player in the league and top 10 players ever!!
best nba channel. keep up the good work!
Thats one great video!
Thru 5 games it appears Cs are gassed in the 4th & starting to wear down. It seems GSWs has figured them out

I think it was similar to the Dallas series. Worn out, and figured out. Dubs in 6
Wonderful explanation! Let’s go warriors! Bring it home!
Great video, great breakdown of the game. The players and coaching staff of the Warriors were prepared with knowing the Celtics never lost two games in a row. In the night when Curry struggled to get into his rhythm, the rest of the teams came through with that kind of immovable and sophisticated defense. But the player of the game is Andrew Wiggins, literally. He was aggressive outta the gate and attacking the basket. His defensive effort was incredible to watch. Game 6 is going to be the game to watch.
excellent video once again
Curry's is an unconventional point guard position; and this video explains why most of the time people/haters could easily dismiss his orchestrating ability since the things he did happen before assist stats could have triggered.

Honestly, I think they win this next game easily if he goes traditional point guard and don't try to hit 7+ 3's in the game.
Celtics forgot that Curry is a playmaker.
You make it sound simple definitely subbing
This is beautifuly done, THANK YOU!!
Appreciate the content. The old media looks at Celtics turnovers like they just careless with the ball or sometimes. Your breakdown shows Golden State defense has figure them out. I feel the runs the Celtic go on, the warriors have let there foot off the gas on defense.
that defence on curry didn't work at all . him hitting from everywhere the game before made this a great team victory cause defence tightened up on that solo player way to much
Love the video. Finally some one highlighting all the openings that curry’s gravity creates and how impactful he is to the warriors offense and the reason why everyone performed so well the last game. The old media keeps harping on the fact he shot poorly and keep denouncing his impact. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks for the vid
Watching this video really made me realize why LeBron on two different occasions said he wanted to play with Steph and the Warriors. Imagine a Steph/LeBron two-man game where LeBron is the short roller playing downhill 4vs3. Or LeBron playing a 5-out offense where he just collapses the defense and kicks to Klay and Steph.

@@josevallenchee11 that’s not defense. He’d have to be committed to playing consistently. And he’d never keep up with GS’s pace.
Golden State's role players really stepped up without Curry being on fire. What killed the Celtics in my view was Tatum and Brown forcing some well contested shots in the fourth and for some reason Udoka decided that they should play the entire game when they were clearly tired; the play that highlights it is when Horford rushes up the court with the ball and tries to do a pick and roll hand off to Brown when he clearly wasn't ready for it. Kerr out-couched Udoka and utilized minutes to their bench to give the starters the rest they needed to finish off the Celtics. It was clear that Golden State was going to win it in the fourth with 5 minutes to go when Golden State started to knock down unguarded shots because Tatum and Brown were dead to try and defend. It seemed that the Celtic's bench was ice cold even though they caught up in the third with their starters. So much energy was used just to do that which resulted in them being tired. The Celtics need to understand that it takes a team to win it and they all need to be on the same page. They all looked dead and disorganized when Golden State was breaking away. There might have been legit missed calls from the refs but having no urgency just cemented their loss to Golden State. Pool got into Smart's head a bit and it almost ended up being with him being kicked off...

It is the limitations of the Celtics playmaking and scoring on their end. It starts with Tatum and he's just not a threat down the stretch to take over the game with his scoring. Especially with how the Warriors are absolutely handling him. Jaylen Brown can't get his spots, can't finish at the rim and worse he's turning over the ball as much as Tatum and providing even less of an ability to take over. The rest of the team can only do so much with their jumpers and shot creation that the Warriors will settle with them trying to put up buckets to try kill them. I've wrote it before but the Celtics at best took the Warriors defense to their limits but never broke them. Steph broke down the Celtics defense in game 4 and they have since never recovered. The Celtics have been worse in 4th quarters the past two games and they cannot close out turning over the ball so much vs a Warriors teams who gets buckets easily from transition.

but the thing is udoka can’t really sit brown or tatum because no one else can make their own shots. smart can, but he is hella inconsistent. so if the two jays aren’t on the floor, boston’s offense stagnates tremendously.
Best analysis I've seen, thanks!
Amazing content
Boston made a fatal mistake. You take steph away and the rest of the team will eat. They shouldve just let steph go off and clamp the others. Now the others are comfortable and have become unafraid and confident of bostons defense. Steph can and will likely drop 20+ next game but now with the rest of the team ready to go

@t4d0W

Its not a fatal mistake. Its a poison the Celtics have to live with going with a specific decision for that game. The worse poison is the Celtics offense that is playing with too much mistakes cannot match the Warriors who put up points via those mistakes.

Yep, Warriors like stat lines like this more the 40 point Steph games Steph 28-29 Clay 25 Greene 8-10 Looney 10 Wiggins 16-18 Poole 16-19 they play better that way.
Just like CP3 making centers effective with his PnR skills, Curry makes wings effective with all the spacing
