As a Mexican I can totally tell you that while Coco feels like a love letter to Mexican culture, The Book of Life feels like a love letter to Mexican culture BY Mexican people. The character and set designs, the colors used, the palettes and the way that it's represented just FEEL so much more familiar than Coco's. Coco feels more like an outsider looking in.

@Main dude chill. That's your opinion. I just saying that while I loved all the inside jokes in Coco (like seeing El Santo and Maria Felix) it still felt very Disney. The character designs and colors in Book of life felt way more familiar. You don't have to be so agressive over someone expressing an opinion

@Main Comment taken from the video I shared "The portrayal of this mexican tradition from a very individualistic american perspective shows that although research was made superficially, I think it lacks depth about how mexican society works. There is actually a specific ofrenda for those who weren't given one by their families which is the "ofrenda del alma sola" (lonely soul) and with this, the worldbuilding crumbles. I find this specially worrying because with more and more mexican people who watch it and incorporate it to the tradition's lore, our culture erodes and rituals like these begin to fade and leaves it vulnerable to companies to exploit it. The glowing petals were cool tho" Grecia C

I remember seeing the reviews of Book of Life: "... a glorification of Mexican culture..." and generally negative. Then Coco came out, and it was praised. It really bothered me, especially when I, a Mexican and always feeling like my culture is ignored, enjoyed both and adored the fact that both are - in their own ways - faithful representations of Mexican culture. Coco made me connect strongly with my father's side of the family, but having the mother in Book of Life - with the characters of Xibalba, La Santa Muerte, and the practice of bull-fighting which I actually saw when I was really little - made me connect my roots back to Mexico. The wooden designs are amazing, like my grandparents dolls. There is so much culture in Book of Life that cannot be ignored.

The problem with the book of life is that more than it seems to be a faithful representation of the Mexican culture, it seems more like a representation of the Spanish culture than the Mexican one, except for one or another detail or reference and I say it like someone who lives in Mexico, a person who knows perfectly what Mexican culture is really like

Coco focus on family part of the Day of the Dead, but Book of Life focus on the mythical part of the day with introducing the 3 mythical beings of the holiday. The Book of Life was one of my favorite movies, ever since the first time I watched it years ago. Coco is much more recent so of course people are talking about that more. I love both movies but they are completely different so it's hard to compare them. I can definitely say the original songs in Book of Life stuck with me and I have to listen to them again every now and then. I also enjoy the movie every time I re-watch it. I learned a lot of interesting stuff about the movie from your video so thank you and good job!

I also love the Day of the Dead tradition and Mexico's views on Death itself. As Finny said; instead of it being something to be feared or hated, Mexicans see it as fact of life...and even a transition to a new life (i.e. either going into Heaven or...downstairs.) Whereas most Americans see death as something so terrifying that they do anything to try and cheat it. If not that, they live by the mindset of "dead people are just plain gone." Translation: "There's no afterlife, just empty nothingness waiting for us after death." I question how such people are able to live their lives under such stinkin' thinkin'

@@TheDeathmail I believe in no afterlife as that is just what would make the most sense. The closest thing to living on after death would be being remembered by loved ones and those who you've made an impact on. No continued consciousness, just proof of your existence in memories. More physical proof such as statues technically would apply too, but they don't have the same feel as living on in memories, heh.

I honestly really loved and was super excited about TBOL back when it first came out. Gutierrez is one of my favorite creators, and despite my rough connection to my Mexican heritage, his work really got me jazzed about it all. The non-original music choices did seem odd back then too, but now knowing that little tidbit about those songs being more personal choices seems kinda rad. Also, really, the twins Adelita and Scardelita I could never forget in a million years. I'll always look forward to more of Gutierrez's work.

I remember seeing ads for this when I was much younger child, and finally getting to watch it a couple years later, for me it would have been a couple years ago. I was so hyped up for it even though I could never watch it, the trailer looked so cool and looked like it would be a very cool looking action-packed movie. When I watch the movie, I didn't know what to expect except for what I had imagined in my mind, so I felt kind of let down after watching the movie cuz it didn't rise up to my expectations. But I can see now that I'm older that it's actually relatively good movie, funny and weird sure, but a good movie nevertheless. I thought that the one who has to go to the underworld (I'm blanking on their names bear with me here) we'll go through this ginormous trial and error thing, where he has to defeat a bunch of bad guys in order to say that he is worthy to go back to the land of living

As an autistic person I get attached to a few movies and only a few, I rewatch them so many times I can’t even count, one day when I was around 8 I went to Bali with family, we found a place that sold DVD’s and bought the book of life, from then on I rewatched it so many times, when I no longer had the DVD I was so upset, until it came on nexflix, you know as soon as I saw it had been placed there I started watching it. It was like a hyperfixation coming back to life It’s a beautiful movie, it shows what movies can be and how unique they can be if you give artists a chance to do something more in their style. And it gives perfect time to represent a different culture and maybe the movie played a large part into while I respected other cultures from a very young age. I’m thankful I was raised on it To this day it’s still one of my favs, along with coraline, into the spider verse, and a few others, so you know it’s great when all the other movies are so good

When I watch this movie for the first time a few days ago, there were a few moments when the three main cast are still kids where some of the dialogue and stuff going on for a little difficult to watch, at least for me. I have a problem sitting through cringe and unfortunately if a story seems very formulaic it can feel very cringe. And a few of the Pop songs showed up it felt very jarring. And I’m not gonna lie when they started rapidfire introducing the main guys family I felt like it was a little overwhelming. All that being said. when it came to the parts that were completely it’s on, The character shown in the gods the interactions that everybody had with each other the songs that were completely original. And it’s a little sad that the only thing people seem to focus on are the things that make it similar to Coco. Which was definitely something that I went into this film making sure I would not do. And straight up, I love you too much and the apology Song, are really good and should definitely be talked about more.

I personally hate "Coco", it´s so chliché and stereotypical, the characters are boring and even if it has that "fantasy element" it doesn´t feel... magical. "The Book of Life" is soooo goooood I really love it, the music is perfect, the character designs are so pretty and interesting, the family actually represents a Mexican family very well (especially in spanish, the accents from different parts of Mexico for different members are amazing) and ofc, IT´S MADE FROM AN ACTUALLY MEXICAN PERSON? I LOVE IT. Being Mexican myself I´d say this film makes me feel proud and care more for El Día de Muertos (this is from a younger generation perspective); I enjoyed the video a lot and I´m happy to hear that so many people like "El Libro de la Vida" too!

I'm Mexican and el día de los muertos is always so much fun, since our own tradition and halloween have kinda mixed together over the years we usually both set up altars and go trick or treating. My mom loves making the altar super nice and since my brother and dad are very busy people I'm usually the one who helps her, at this point we don't even just put photos of our dead familiars, we put photos of our pets (I love keeping bugs as pets so there are quite a few) and artists we like who have sadly already passed. Our front yards is pretty big so we decorate it all around and then we dress up to give candy to the kids who come trick or treating, I make costumes as a hobby and I made a satyr costume I'm really proud of so that's usually what I dress up as. After a while we like go around town to see how everyone decorated their houses and altars and it's just such a vibe, I fucking love that day
