"If you find yourself constantly escaping from reality, then you need to work hard to create a reality you don't want to escape from." This really spoke to me. I find myself constantly wanting to check my phone if I'm frustrated or unsure what to do next in the day. I think I'm doing better by having a to-do list that I complete throughout the week but I still struggle to hold myself accountable. Here's to creating a better reality.

I never write a "to-do list". Instead, I mix up the words to make it less like a chore and more like something that's even more important and fun. I write a "success plan". Start writing "success plans" and you'll notice that you will start to take action sooner and procrastinate less. :) Who wants a "have to do" list when you can have a PLAN for Success? Sounds better right? Same thing applies with schooling and work life. Instead of saying "I have to study" say "I get to study". Reality is, if you live in a technologically advanced world, you are lucky. Not everyone does and it's easy to forget that. Try to be more grateful and you'll realize even though you are not where you want to be you are somewhere other people dream to be...

A bit extreme, but I just keep my phone tucked away in my closet for about 90% of the day on most days. My desire to engage with technology is quite low (even though I have a tech background and have been on the other side of the algorithm) because it’s a vortex in which time disappears, guilt arises, headaches form, and overall it’s never as satisfying to use in the first place. It is actually quite satisfying and enjoyable to just be bored. In my opinion, boredom breeds creativity. Boredom (while intentionally keeping the phone away) allows me to seek joy from other sources, such as cooking, admiring nature, drawing, nature walks, etc. it allows me to be “free” in a busy, noisy, over stimulating world. boredom with the phone in hand, on the other hand is a different story. Anyways, just keep the damn phone in a drawer somewhere, and go live life everyone 🙃 there is much fun to be had. If anyone here is a 90’s kid, you know we had our ways of having fun “back in the day” without all the technology stuff

You're not wrong. With quarantine and not being able to do whatever else I did before this pandemic, when I am not working, I spend nearly 90% of my day on my computer or phone. I found myself scrolling/consuming whatever I could on socials during my free time. Decided I needed to stop and went cold turkey. I am on day nine of no social media (besides the occasional YT video.) I have found doing other things and staying off my phone, interesting. It was hard at first. Asking myself, what should/can/could I do? Now, I have a long list of things I want to do and plan to do. But at the start, sitting with that anxiety and discomfort you talk about, I felt that and am still feeling it. The boredom and almost feeling like I could be and should be doing something else. Definitely a time to sit in the discomfort and process those feelings. Ask myself the same question Nathaniel asked, "What is your relationship with yourself?" On day 7: I went to the museum by myself, (wore a mask and distanced from others there!), didn't even touch my phone I was so engrossed in the art. The algorithm can eat my shorts.

“You need to work really hard to create a reality you don’t want to escape from”. This is big because it implies being intentional with your daily life. Like the video says I think intentionality is key here. To not allow ourselves to get into that “doomscrolling” habit where we’re just on social media because we’re bored. That takes being mindful like the video says. Between 2019 and 2020 I had to spend a lot of time being more mindful of my thoughts than the average because I nearly died and was suffering from some PTSD from the experience. Being aware of my thoughts helped me climb out of that dark place mentally. The exercise of doing those mental checks dailiy has helped during the pandemic to help me limit my time on social media. I don’t always get it right but being mindful makes a huge difference. And I second the recommendation of reading Digital Miniminalism. Such a great read!

Appreciate these vids man, when you mentioned anxiety about stepping away from social media, I can relate. The near irresistible urge social media has over our life/attention because of its instant gratification, can get disturbing when looking back on the times wasted. It's so ingrained in our lifestyle many wouldn't know what to do with ourselves without it.

I have clicked on the like button a few seconds before you told :) The problem it's not just the algorithm of every site on the Internet which tries to keep us as much as possible in the net, it's also our lack of privacy. Most people are not conscious about how much information we give (voluntary and free!) when we use an app, when we visit a site... So people need to be aware of two facts: the time they spent in the Internet and the data they are giving. I hope I have explained myself correctly, sometimes it's difficult to express what it is inside and specially in a language that it's not my native language. Loved the video. Greetings from Spain.

Thank god for spreading this kind of message! Self responsibility! My perception of our culture is that of entitled victims. I live in New England, every winter, ice happens, although we should do something about it, it’s also up to people to remember, it’s f-ing cold out, I better watch my step. Same here in your virtual concept. There is so much, free, instant access to information. I try to use it to be my best me, as independent, responsible, altruistic as I can be today. I think the age of frivolous lawsuits made there scare on culture and right after that media and advertising pounding away the message “you deserve “ . I stopped watching cable 15 years ago, back then in one commercial break it would be said 2-3 times in different commercials. This got my sub click.

Hey man, been watching your videos for a while and I think you really hit the nail on the head with this one. This topic is something thats been on my mind these past few months and I actually got into reading (or rather listening) to books again because of you. I wanted to know if you've considered making a discord for this community where people could openly discuss the types of topics you bring about in your videos, comment on things we've read or just share general insight and... better ideas (Obviously, this kind of goes against the whole "limiting one's time on the internet" deal but if I'm gonna be on here regardless I think that's a damn healthier alternative)

I have trouble with the internet because, I have to use it for my study, but at the same time it is super distracting. You can't just shut off a part of the internet by yourself. It comes down to not looking and that is hard if you are doing something that is boring. I get distracted just by sitting behind the PC, whatever I do, since it always reminds me of a serie, a youtube channel or something else online. It's getting out of hand >.

There are some browser extensions (leechblock), some study / work methods (pomodoro technique) some concepts (time blocking) that have helped me in the past and that can help with this. I'm trying to reimplement them into my life now as they were definitely useful back then. Don't be harsh with yourself when you have setbacks (when, not if, as there will be some, smaller or bigger), life is a marathon and not a sprint and even one year is nothing compared to the 40/50/60/70 that you'll live after the current one.

Also, ultimately everything is an habit. For example now I have the habit of going to youtube as soon as I sit in front of the PC, which I'm slowly trying to transform into the habit of doing relevant work as soon as I sit in front of the PC, no matter how much work I'll do then (two minutes are enough!). zen habits (from Leo Babauta) has one book about how to build habits that's quite on point and really nice.

I got inspired by Nathaniel and the the 'literal human egg' (sorry Joey 🤣) to get off social media for 30 days in January, and added 30 days of yoga to that. It was tempting to go back sometimes because of lockdown, as I felt leaving social media was disconnecting me from my friends even further. But I texted them and said I would look at all the memes and stuff they sent me in February. I reinstalled the apps yesterday and after awhile of catching up, I didn't miss using the apps that much anymore. I still get carried away and get distracted sometimes but I noticed the impulse of checking notifications and scrolling diminished a lot! I am even tempted to repeat this again for a month starting in a couple of days, it really contributed to feel more in control of my time :) Ps. if you don't want to go cold turkey on this, I recommend installing some google extension that blocks youtube recommendations and blocks social media newsfeed. That way you are not bombarded with new information and just check what you really want to. :)

Pure and genuine content. Keep going, you're telling something great and interesting that many people wouldn't have thought about. I have been gradually distancing myself from this form of media but never entirely. I think this stems from generational differences and self interest in tech. But the most important part is what you're saying with being conscious about our media usage. To just commute without staring at the phone turns a "boring" bus trip into an actual oppurtunity to reflect and look out the window and go "whoa" at the outside world we often take for granted. Or a simple meal becomes way more enjoyable if you just stop to think and focus on the meal. (I guess Im just preaching mindfullness now. Maybe I'll start a channel) Thanks again for your inspiring work

For youtube (I can't block it since I need it for school) I use the ''remove recommendations'' chrome extension, that way those colorful thumbnails won't distract me, you can also hide comments, home recommendations, and right recommendations. But sometimes i just need to inform myself about an ongoing topic or need to watch some interview/talk for university. I´m still figuring out how to find the right balance, but here are a few less radical steps that helped: time-limit on my macbook, having separate youtube accounts for education/entertainment, only using youtube on one "entertainment-device", not going to the start-page but only to the subscriptions-page.
