How the 24-Hour Content Cycle and Social Media Threaten Democracy | Ray Marcano | TEDxDayton

Journalist Ray Marcano argues that the greatest threats to our democracy are the 24 hour content cycle and social media. Ray Marcano has more than thirty-five years of journalism experience as a reporter, executive, and leader at newspapers in New York, Oklahoma, and Dayton, Ohio. He has vast digital media experience and finished his media career as senior director of audience growth for Cox Media Group, where he oversaw the company’s national content desk. He now runs his own consulting firm, which focuses on digital media, writing, and editing. He’s the former national president of the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation’s most prestigious journalism association, a two-time Pulitzer juror, and a Fulbright fellow. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I can hear Jack Webb as Sgt. Joe Friday saying "just the facts ma'am". But then, I hear Jack Nicholson's character in A Few Good Men " you can't handle the truth. Thank you Professor Marcano for the true facts on the subliminal chaos and confusion that social media brings to our lives.

Great video. He points out a very critical solution to inadvertent media effects: content scrutiny. This is a part of the media literacy solution that proposes that becoming more aware of your media consumption -- beyond scrutiny-- will help prevent "tribalism" or at least minimize its occurrence in democratic societies.

They're portrayed as but is by people who don't like it, but that's not true. Snopes have said a lot of things against people who they supposedly support. It's supposed to be just about what the facts are. Weather people don't like their fax or not, it's different. Some people want a conclusive answer, which Snopes can't give. There's different Maybe or I have true or not completely true, so it's pretty down pat.
