@@JonSmith-hk1bq prob since super mario odyssey doesn't have a run mechanic in the rest of the game so people just never bothered trying and the few that did figure it out prob thought everyone knew considering how fast people were beating that part compared to them and the speedrunners focus on optimizing as much as they can which causes them to overlook obvious things since testing something that might not work would be a waste of time

Reminds me of how a Rainbow Coin in Donkey Kong 64 was discovered 17 years after release. Some claim that they found it as kids or that they checked their old save file and noticed that they already collected it, yet it wasn't public knowledge until 2 years ago because hey... *surely* everybody already knows about it so there's no need to document it on the internet, right? Really makes me curious about some of my own interesting observations I've made in games where I thought "This must be something that every expert player of this game already knows about". For all I know someone's "common knowledge" about a game might lead to insane new speedrunning records.

I know about a skip in luncheon where you triple jump from the town all the way up to the cheese rocks. PS you triple jump where you usually capture the lava bubble next to that you can find a little studs and if you triple jump off of them then campgrounds in dive you can just barely make it to the cheese rocks saving around 30 to 40 seconds I hope this helps someone

I've only played SMO once. I've never done a single speedrun in my life, yet the ending in this video, where everyone is just screaming and yelling, elated at what they just did, made my eyes well up a little. This is just two years of what speedrun optimization can do to a game. Just imagine, 15 years down the line, when you can beat SMO in under 20 minutes. It'll be SM64 all over again. Damn.
