How Strong Are RC Hydraulics & Winches? Let's Test!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Have you wondered about how strong RC winches are? Or about RC hydraulic strength in the newer stuff coming out these days? Well, today's the day we find out - it's time for a lift test!
We've gathered a variety of vehicles to test their lift capacity. Which is the strongest?
We test:
Huina 1580 1:14 Excavator;
Liebherr 945 1:14 Hydraulic Excavator;
Kubota WA470 1:14 Hydraulic Wheel Loader;
Cross RC BC8 Mammoth Flagship (winch); and
Traxxas TRX-4 Bronco with generic bar winch.
Which is the greatest? Find out here!

    Got the hydraulic excavator to lift just on 15kg on 4.5Mpa. Don't think I want to go higher than that though! I've had a chat with the factory and they reckon it's fine to run at 4mpa for general play, so that's what I'll do. 12-ish kg is adequate for the full experience. Solved the leak issue, too. More on that in another video when we go over this thing in more detail, coming soon!

    It could be, there's scant detail about it yet. I'll do a video on it soon with the cover off. It's about as budget as hydraulic excavators get, short of converting a Huina 1580! I'll add that I'm now running this one at 4mpa with the seller's blessing and it's plenty strong. This is the cheaper end of things. I might have bought the 336gc in hindsight (or whatever the budget Kabolite 336 model is), but after some tweaking and screw tightening this one is growing on me.

    Ah! This was my ignorance/forgetfulness! The hydraulic pressure was at the minimum setting. It's since been turned up and is now strong enough to bend its own bucket if you're not careful! The 1580 is great value though isn't it!

    That's some serious pulling power on that BC8 winch. But, considering the vehicle and its other specs, not really all that surprising. That truck is pretty beastly, I expect pretty much everything about it and everything it can do matches that description. Your choice of winch on your TRX-4 is interesting. Why did you choose that one, and what bumper did you mount it on? I put the stock "Scale Winch" from Traxxas on my TRX-4 1979 Bronco. Traxxas states that the max weight of that winch is 10lbs, but I have never tested it. I suspect the relatively soft plastic of the Traxxas "scale winch bumper" will fail long before the winch reaches maximum capacity. That bumper is soft, flimsy, and very bendy. I don't trust it for anything serious, I just haven't been motivated to change it. While I haven't tested just how much it really can pull, the winch itself is pretty solid and seems to work well. On my wife's Redcat Gen8 V2, we mounted a Warn 8274 from RC4WD on the stock bumper. That's what a Scout II would have had from the dealer, it's what they SHOULD have, so when I found out there was a scale one, that was the only logical choice. And let me tell you, that 8274 is every bit the beast a real 8274 is. RC4WD claims it has a 50lb dead lift and 70lb rolling drag and I believe them, there are videos right here on KZread demonstrating it's capable of quite a bit more than that if you push it. If you're looking for a good reliable strong and tough scale winch, that's the one to have. It's monstrous. Eventually the TRX-4 will get one of these too. Honestly, all of the weight capabilities of these vehicles you have are pretty surprising. I expect them to be capable, in order to do scale construction type things and to make playing with them genuinely interesting and fun. It really wouldn't be if they couldn't do what they're supposed to. But I think they outstrip expectations by a goodly amount. Those are impressive machines.

  • @RCTNT

    @RCTNT

    Ah yes, the 8274! I remember when RC4WD released that in mid 2016, what a beast! I've been meaning to get my hands on that at some point, but haven't gotten to it yet! Amazing power. The one in my Bronco is just a cheapie. I cut into the grille and recessed it a bit. It's bolted to the plate behind the bumper, from memory - it's been a while since I looked at it - but it runs on 3S via a WP-1060 that's run from the GT-5's fifth channel, on a dial. Gives that fine control both directions :) Nice choice for the Gen 8 V2. I didn't know much about Int. Harvester until recently - just wasn't on my radar, given they're pretty much non-existent in Australia in favour of the Japanese 4x4s here. I saw the one that Derek on VGG fixed-up a bit, recently. I definitely see the appeal!! Oh and hey, I haven't had time to make a follow-up to this video yet with the hydraulic excavator, but I had its hydraulic pressure turned down too much. It's now running at about 2.8 PSI and the arm can lift about 16KG. Much better than in this video! Strong enough to even damage itself (ie. bend a bucket or snap a track section) if I'm not careful! It's a lot of fun - it'll get a dedicated tour video soonish :)

    Hydraulic, easily. I had an issue in this video and have since fixed it. Hydraulic excavator is strong enough to bend its own bucket, now. Same system as in the bucket loader. There's really no comparison. Hydraulic is where it's at for strength.

    Do you mean the yellow wheel loader or the white excavator? Wheel loader can do about 20kg and it's running at 3mpa. Excavator I haven't measured yet but it will have a video soon. I'm running it at 3.5mpa and it's strong enough to bend metal, so I'm guessing 20kg or so. I didn't represent it well in this video. There is one coming for it though! I haven't run either at 5 yet.

    I was sharing your dread as you put more and more weight on these RCs... Almost had me sweating, suffering for those tiny little metal gears! Speaking of winches, we were trail driving the RCs today. We were wondering where do you draw the line? Some competitions are trying so hard to make the courses challenging, it's not like they require a winch ro pull yourself out of tough lines, but if you don't use it to swing from the cable as you drive, you might not make it. Nuts! Personally, I've never used one, although my little MST CMX "Jimny" (242mm wb on 83mm diameter tires) would really benefit from any help to creep up in many spots... although I wonder how "lazy" on relying on the winch would I become if I had one. Also, I haven't seen much winch specialized content, if you wanted any ideas... which I'm sure you already had, but, anyway, there ya go, haha! =)

  • @RCTNT

    @RCTNT

    2 жыл бұрын

    Lol awesome thanks I've been in comps for a few years where winches were needed half the time. You don't get "lazy" with them because they're a bit of a pain - you need to resist using Hand of God to recover. But for scale driving and fun, it's entertaining in limited doses. The best comp courses don't need a winch but can reward their judicious use. Building a course is something that's hard to teach or define, but with some practice you can make something that balances on that knife's edge of challenging but possible for all to finish. Winches can add to that, but shouldn't be the central focus of a course - unless it's specifically a winch challenge... And boom, there's a video idea. I have a bunch of different winches. I guess it might be useful or interesting to do something that combines a comparison/review with a challenge of some kind. Hmm.
