Good material testing, Lauri! It made me think of my friend, Matt's, video (Next Level Carpentry) where he built some ultra-strong saw horses and tested them by loading large bunks of lumber on them. If you have a few minutes, here is the testing part of his video (9 minutes): kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXmJybCjhJTUd7g.html It would be interesting to place one of his mini-saw horses in your press to see how much pressure it can take! Maybe I will talk with Matt to see if he wants to build one for you to test. Also, let me know if you'd even be interested in doing a video like this. 😉 Thx!!

Finally, a useful video. I mean, I tired of chairs losing their screws just under 120kg of weight, but Ikea tests them just for 100kg. So, thank you. May I also suggest Oddvar. It also has some stiffeners, like Norraker, but it's several times less expensive.

Dude, if you bought a few items from Ikea you should know how strong their stuff is. It's designed to be basically impervious to standard use because otherwise all the customers will complain within the standard warranty limit of 1 year (minimum by EU law) and they have a no questions asked trade-in policy. Would be expensive if the stuff failed all the time.

A rule about when a load is set on something (like your butt on a stool): If a load is suspended just barely above (technically zero clearance) a surface and then released to land on the surface, the surface will see a force twice the weight of the load. When people sit, they often drop onto the seat from a bit higher than a zero clearance height. Thus, the seat can see forces well above two times the persons weight. For a chair to withstand someone sitting down hard, it should probably be capable of supporting a static load at least 5 times the weight of the person. Ten times would be better.
