    In my 10 years as a Claims Adjuster, I enjoyed it, I agree at exactly 8:30am my phone rings I received call average 15-20 calls a day. Workload is eternity. 8 hours is not enough.. Now Im a senior adjuster and im handling 10 junior adjusters, I felt im in the battlefield especially when typhoon comes,.but still I love it. Stress is only tickles me,,. I consider stress as a pressure only that makes me stronger.. I learned the ability to negotiate and be persuasive. I learned to make an irate client happy after I talked to them like magic happens 😂 My Tip to starters.. Do not Panic 🤣

    what gets to me is when the agent's who setup the client's insurance are screaming at me because of the poor communication or service that now they're leaving the company and it's affecting them personally etc.. it's literally impossible to get to every email, new claim, notes, voicemails and manage reminders without overtime, the hair on my keyboard from being ripped out of my head is proof enough im too stressed lol

    I’m currently a licensed adjuster and I admit it is a very stressful position. It is a learning curve and challenging, especially if you don’t have any prior insurance experience. However, organization, structure, and a workload flow is key because you can get overwhelmed very quickly. You are correct about making sure that you do all that you can in one claim before moving on to the next and setting reminders are essential. My mental health can’t take it so I’m already actively looking for other positions but I salute the ones who do this role!

The money is okay. I think I’m motivated by the challenge and chance for growth. I am definitely going back to school so if I stop wanting to do this, I can have options. The stress fades a bit when you know more and feel comfortable on the phone, but it never fully goes away. It's super important for you to have an outlet for stress!! Like being creative, exercising, whatever. For me it was really easy to internalize the stress, and that's a quick road to burnout. That's what I did- I saved as much money as I could and then went back to school. I tried school while working full-time, and it was impossible with this kind of job. I ended up quitting to go to school full-time, and I'm so happy I did.

    All good tips! I've been in this for about 14 years and 8 as an adjuster. This is definitely a stressful position and most people stay because of the money. Every company gives you more work than 1 person can handle until you're stressed to the max. I've done auto liability injuries and non injuries along with WC. I'm an HSP (highly sensitive person) and highly empathetic, so it took an extreme toll on me. You've gained an immaculate skillset!!! You just have to know how to get other industries to see that. Hi Maribel, some companies will pay for you to study and get your adjusting license, so don't wait to apply! I'm not much of a salesperson either, but I like helping people so the adjuster job turned out okay for a while. If you like helping people and can handle stress and the possibility of burnout, adjusting might be for you. If not, you could also look into being a call representative for an insurance adjusting company, which is like answering phones and taking care of small issues, which will have fewer opportunities for intense situations. Best of luck to you!

Also it made me super professional for the rest of my career! I think it'll be worth it for you to try it out. These 3 things are important enough for you to write them on sticky notes and put them on your computer: 1) Remember to not take things personally (customers are understandably stressed after car accidents). 2) Learn to de-stress outside of work in a healthy way with hobbies and talking to your friends and family. 3) The job will be hard at first, but after a few months (it took 6 months for me), things just *click* into place and it's a lot easier to keep going.

    Hello! So I’m working with an insurance company as a Claims specialist. So I take the accident reports and I handle claims with clear liability and no injuries. One thing that I’ve always wondered is how adjusters receive claims. Like do you get a certain amount of claims assigned to you? Like how is it that you go about seeing which claims have been assigned to you? :)

  • @YourFriendlyInsuranceAdjuster

    @YourFriendlyInsuranceAdjuster

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Thanks for reaching out. That's cool, I really liked working clear liability claims. :) So when claims are reported, the person or software will sort it into different categories. Some are separated into specialties, like fatalities. Then once they are categorized within the system, the claims are assigned in round-robin kind of system, where each claims adjuster gets a claim, then the next one, and the next one, then it keeps going around within the categories. And if someone is sick or on vacation, they can easily be taken off the schedule. I think further than that it might go into different details depending on the company. So you can always ask your manager about the details of your company!

    My first insurance job was through a third party company called sitel. I did FNOL as an unlicensed agent for auto policies for about 2 years and I had an awful call. A woman was driving and a car going the opposite direction swerved into the woman’s lane hitting the womans car head on. It killed her and two children in the backseat. Husband called and got me and started crying as he was explaining the accident and at that moment I said I’m done with claims. I then transitioned to policy services and sales as a licensed agent. After about three years in sales/services I’m genuinely thinking about going back to claims because it felt more fulfilling.

    Hey there! So sorry to hear that you were in an accident and were hurt. With uninsured motorists, you'll need to go through your company first with the auto damage and also your injuries. After you're taken care of, your company will hire debt collectors to go directly after the uninsured motorist. You could try to go after them yourself, but 98% chance you won't get anywhere with that. If you're concerned about your rates going up or anything like that, you can talk to your insurance agent about it. Hope things turn out all right for you!

    What feedback can you provide on this? I am a new adjuster. I have only 2 years experience doing it so far, all 2 years being with Allstate as a property desk adjuster (water claims mostly, obviously). I took the inside property adjuster position because it was the first interview and offer I got out of all the apps I put in for. I took it as it got my foot in the door and have learned an immense amount about how insurance claims work. I do like it as well. However, I am already a bit burned out with the structural property aspect of it. Writing Estimates for baseboards and drywall has really burned me out. Dont get me wrong it's not that it's too hard, I actually have decent experience in construction basics and am very mechanically inclined, but in lamen terms, I'm BORED as heck with it. I love the investigative part of the job and was thinking of trying my hand at Liability. What feedback do u have for me in regards to switching to Liability from Homeowners/Property?

    Hi Joseph! Well, you're not a brand new adjuster, so you've got some leverage. So it sounds like you're the person writing estimates, I wonder if you would do better with field work? I've had all types of claims where an insured drives straight into or through buildings like banks and jewelry stores. That kind of thing can't really be done by pictures alone, I would have to send someone out in the field to write the estimate. But you said you were bored with the structural aspects of it.. maybe you would do better as an auto liability adjuster. Not sure for All State, but my smaller company assigned property liability claims to the auto adjusters since there aren't that many of them. As an auto liability adjuster, you'd have a LOT more variety and more responsibility with talking directly to drivers to get their stories and to access percentages of liability. //////// Above all, I would highly suggest that you have a good conversation with your manager or another manager about the future of your career. Don't say that you're bored- that has a negative connotation and makes you seem not happy to have the job. Instead, talk to them about how you want more of a challenge and more responsibility. I hope this helps, and hope you find yourself in a more fulfilling position!

    so this is basically what I'd call an upper level adjuster from a claims office. I do the appraiser and total loss side of this, and I went from working out of a vehicle, to working from my home office since March 2020. Lot has changed since 2019, but I would hate this side of it. If she wants to speak to less people, get some appraisal experience and any licenses that it requires.

  • @YourFriendlyInsuranceAdjuster

    @YourFriendlyInsuranceAdjuster

    3 жыл бұрын

    Look at it from the top level first- broker/agent versus adjuster. A broker will need to be great at selling, a people person, and good at explaining policies to customers. An adjuster will need to be organized, good at conflict resolution and problem-solving, and resilient against stress. There's also appraisers, who go out and write damage estimates of vehicles and homes. Home and Auto are more about taking care of material things, like car repairs and house fires. There are injuries involved, it depends on the company if you have to do those or not. With commercial lines, I'd imagine you're taking care of more injuries like workman's comp and handling customer slip and falls. However there's also company cars (vans, bigger trucks, and also 18-wheelers) and equipment that fall under insurance, as well as liability if the company did something wrong (ex: a contractor not installing something right and damage happening). Hope that helps! Warm wishes.

It helps to talk to your coworkers about cases and hear how they come to their decision making. Once you've got lots of cases under your belt, you'll be able to make quicker decisions. Best of luck!

    Does it make things more stressful when you have to work with an attorney to close the claim?

  • @YourFriendlyInsuranceAdjuster

    @YourFriendlyInsuranceAdjuster

    Жыл бұрын

    It depends on how serious the case is (like injuries and fatalities vs only car damage) and how professional the attorney is. If theyre legit and it's a fatality case, heck yes I would rather work with an attorney. They'll make sure things are squared away on their end and i can trust them on that. If it's an attorney who doesn't care paired with simple car damage or even very light injuries, then it makes the whole thing more messy and stressful to deal with. It's harder to trust that theyre taking care of the customer instead of puffing up the case out of proportion. Also when it's a smaller claim like that, the claimants think they can call us directly for everything, but it's at the lawyer's discretion on if we can even talk to them. Ive had bad lawyers drop the ball to where the customer calls us like once a week wanting to know what's going on, and we have to continually tell them to call their lawyer to get more info.

    I'm no longer in insurance, but was thinking about making a "here's where im at now" kind of video. I think the answer depends on your situation: 1) how hurting for money you are 2) how stress affects you, or if you're good at managing it 3) if you can easily stay at your agent role, or if you can go back to it if needed At the time I really needed the money and was excited to try out something new. If I knew what i knew now... I would probably have to do it again, but I wouldn't stay in it for nearly as long (4 years - 1 year is when most people drop it) Best of luck to you! • @YourFriendlyInsuranceAdjuster

    Hey there, thanks for your response. The career path is "leveling up" in the adjuster position (trainee is 0-1 year, promotion leads to level 1, which is around years 2 and 3, then level 2 is years 4-7ish, and finally level 3 is years 8-30), going into a specialized position (like fraud investigation or fatalities), or going into management over other adjusters. The high turnover happens simply because adjusting is extremely emotionally stressful plus a high workload. People typically leave within the first 6 months to 1 year of starting.

    Hi Jay. Yes, claims adjusters are typically on the phone most of the day. I would say the higher up/more specialized you are (for example, if you're a manager or deal with fatalities), the less time you'll be on the phone. **** What you might want to look into is Claims Appraising, aka vehicle appraising, aka other things in different places. This is where you'd be appraising the damage of the vehicle or house. You would visit people's houses, auto body shops, and tow yards to do this. Some of the work is on the phone, but not nearly as much- it would be like to make appointments or talk to the claims adjuster and shop in certain situations. A lot of work would be done inside the appraisal software, which you would be taught on the job im assuming. Best of luck out there.

    Does that mean if your office hours are regular business hours, you can receive calls from customers at anytime, during weekends too? Is it okay to ask them to call during office hours?

    Hi Joanne! You'll get calls from customers 24/7. It's a great idea to ask them to call during office hours, and that's something you'll usually specify on your voicemail recording. If it's outside of business hours, then their call will go straight to voicemail. When you start work on Monday mornings, there will usually be loads of voicemails to work through.

    Being an adjuster do you try your best to not pay anything out? I feel like you need to learn to say no alot and not help people. Is that true?

    Amber Cockrum absolutely not! You pay what you owe. At my company we look for coverage, not a reason not to pay. I’ve been in the industry over 20 years.

    Like Lovinlfe said, we absolutely pay what we owe. If there's ever a doubt in coverage, we painstakingly look through the policies and talk to our coworkers and higher ups to try to get coverage. However, you do have to say "no" a lot, usually when the customer expects to come out better off than they were before. Some customers feel like they don't get a fair payout because they unknowingly get extremely high estimates for repairs. This usually happens if they go to a brand-name dealership for repairs, or like if they're trying to put brand new parts on a vehicle made in 2000. Insurance is there to put you back at the same place you were before the incident, not to give you better parts, you know?

    It really varies, but I was on the phone for like 75% of the time. Most calls are from insured customers, claimants (the other customers), and auto body shops.

    I am about to start training to be an insurance adjuster. They called the position entry level adjuster. Wondering what that means? Also you said there is a big work load. How do you keep track of the items you need to do? Do you have a planner that you fill out or a to do list were you can check items off as you go?

  • @YourFriendlyInsuranceAdjuster

    Hi, thanks for your comment! Kudos on your new job. Your company will put you through training and licensing, and you'll learn about the policies, liability, and laws. Yep, it's a big work load. I was so frustrated when I first started, because when I asked anyone (and everyone) how they kept track, everyone had a different answer. And of course, if i asked managers about what was more important to be done first, they would say it's all important and just get it done. What I ended up doing was have a running to-do list written down with my top 3 or 4 things to get done each day. Then I managed the claims system to have tasks pop back up on time, but never early. You can always work ahead, but if you fall behind it snowballs. The customers who need the most attention will call you before it's time to call them. Oh!! And a really big thing is to do every task you possibly can while you're in a claims file. Every single thing. That way you dont have to keep going back to reorient yourself in what's happening in the file, because that can take time. When you get a new claim, work it until you cant anymore, then set a reasonable time to check back on it. Hope this helps!

    I know right? Adjusting can seem like a good deal of money at first.. like $50k is nothing to laugh at, but to me the stress wasn't worth it. From what I've seen from my friends, tech is where most of the money is being made. Not the IT customer service side, more like QA engineering or software engineering. If you're more of a creative type you can go for something like UX Design. Best of luck to you!

    Hey there, I'm sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience with an insurance company. If their client is non-cooperative, it sucks for everyone. However, if you file through your own insurance company, your insurance company will go directly after the client if that's what happened.

    The problem is the criminals turn adjusters into very jaded people. So when an honest person has a real claim they think they are a criminal also. The entire system is broken and a complete shit show.
