DISCLAIMER: I’m aware of the fall damage explanation not being up to date with current knowledge. We were unaware of this info when making the video, mistakes happen :) I went to see how it would look with it trimmed out (you can cut stuff out of videos on KZread after they're uploaded), but it made the whole section janky and not flow well, and I'd prefer to leave it in with the disclaimer here that the fall damage explanation is not accurate. Fall damage is based on distance between your starting height and landing height. With zips, you end up at heights around the same or above where you started, so no fall damage is taken in most cases.

So far on the tomatoanus channel, we’ve covered Sekiro, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, and Demon’s Souls. Now it’s time to bring it all home by covering Elden Ring in this SPEEDRUN EXPLAINED. We worked together with seeker, world record holder for the Any% (Unrestricted) category, to bring you a video covering TWO runs of From Software’s newest installment: Any% (Restricted) and Any% (Unrestricted). In this video, we first go over the Restricted run, followed by the Unrestricted run, explaining all the tricks along the way, including easy boss strats, warping all around the map (wrong warps), the infamous zip glitch, and much much more. This video serves as an explanation of the strategies seeker uses to beat the game in both 25 minutes and 5 minutes.

That is exactly how much weight that term has behind it.

    Are you referring to him featuring both vids ? Hes really way too far in the red in terms of people using social media attention span and or free time. 48:50 is overkill . You could commentate the run or let speed runner do it while it is in play with a summary statement at the end and keep it under 35 minutes . If you asked a question that could only be answered if you had watched to damn near the end, what percentage of your viewers would get it right ? Me personally ...I think 10% would be fantastic but I'd realistically be happy if anyone got it right.

Guys like Joseph Anderson or Hbomberguy have a whole career off of putting out 3+ hr long videos. Yes your viewer retention isn't very high but once youre 10-15 min in a video the retention doesn't drop off that much, since if you're willing to invest 15 minutes into a video you're probably there for the long haul anyway. I swear to god every time I seemed to be at my lowest you’d drop a new video. Your messages about tomorrow coming and feelings being temporary, as well as your content in general, have helped me pull myself out of some pretty dark places. Fall damage is actually 100% based on fall height, with falls over 15 meters dealing damage and anything over 20 meters being instant death. The reason zips work is because you land above the height you began the zip, meaning the game doesn’t actually think you fell because it just compares the Y value from where you left the ground to where you land. If you fall for around 10-11 seconds the game will instakill you as a fail safe for falling out of the map, but the timer can be reset with an attack.

  • @HypnoTox

    @HypnoTox

    Great video as always Mr anus! A few quick corrections from my perspective as another Elden Ring speedrunner: 1. "Skipping" Stormveil Castle is actually entirely intended by the developers, there's a little path you can take from the broken bridge, the jump that seeker does at 9:00 is just a faster way to accomplish the intended route of just walking around the castle. 2. Seeker keeps a very wide berth at 19:40 not only to avoid clipping the wall, but also to avoid loading the area in early. If you avoid the wall, but then stay left, you will load the elevator in early and it will move too far before you're able to jump down, so you'll miss the elevator and fall to your death. But if you keep right and load it late, you land safely. 3. Any% Unrestricted is run on 1.04 which is actually NOT the current patch of the game. The current patch is 1.05, and it isn't used because they patched it so that you can't reset your fall timer by swinging your weapon, you will instead just die very quickly, before the bosses have a chance to die. 4. Fall damage is more complicated than the explanation that you gave, but the explanation you gave is close enough. If you are falling without ever touching the ground, it works almost exactly as you described, and after a certain time you will die. The time is extended if you are above your starting height, but it isn't infinite, and you can die before ever getting back down to your original height. However, if you land, it completely ignores the fall timer, and instead looks at fall distance. It compares the place you last touched the ground, to where you finally land, regardless of how high up into the air you went. So if you get launched a mile into the air, but land at the same height you started at, you take no fall damage. This is very similar to what you said, but the distance is the important thing and not the time. This can also get a bit wonky with stable ground, and it can cause falls that should be survivable, to suddenly become fatal if the game doesn't recognize some of the ground you stood on as stable ground. 5. Using Alt-f4 is only allowed in the unrestricted run, that's why it isn't used in the restricted Any% run, even though it could potentially save some time. And when he does the wrong warp at 43:10 , it actually works the same way as the one in the restricted run, putting us out of bounds, because the default memory of grace location is back in the "tutorial" area near Soldier of Godrick, and the default location for that area is out of bounds. We just don't have a warp point to warp to, and instead the alt-f4 forces a wrong warp even without using our map. The alt-f4 then also acts as the quitout after going out of bounds, combining both halves of the wrong warp into just one input. 6. While doing the mega zips to kill both phases of Maliketh, Seeker doesn't actually need to "wait" until he passes his initial starting height, the game simply won't let you swing your weapon if you are too far above your starting height. So he can spam the button, and the swing will only happen right before he gets there, giving plenty of time for Maliketh to fall without having to worry about swinging too late. 7. At 46:12 , that is the Godfrey arena not Godrick. (Sorry for nitpicking, the names all just sound the same lol)

    Correction: in Elden Ring fall damage is based on distance fallen, with damage starting at 16 meters and a fall being lethal at 20 meters. The reason why zips won't kill you is that the distance fallen is calculated from the point at which you begin falling, which is where you start the zip. Because where you're landing is above the starting point, you will take no fall damage. The only fall timer in Elden Ring is if you have been falling for 30 seconds the game instakills you to avoid getting stuck falling endlessly.

    I came here to comment exactly this. There's a great video that explains this in great detail, using debugging tools to test all the possible configurations of falling. The even test forcing the player to stay stuck in the air for a long time, then landing. As long as the point you started from is less than 20m higher than the point you land, you don't die, even if you've been in the air for much longer than a few seconds.

    @@matthewshafer9545 Yup, illusory wall made two videos going into insane detail on fall damage in Elden Ring. Here's his first video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKFhs6Ntor22ic4.html He goes into great detail about all the specifics, but I didn't consider it super important for my comment. The most important part is that fall damage has nothing to do with how long you fall, and everything to do with how *far* you fall. It's a big misconception, since there's also an additional timer that will kill you if you're stuck floating for an extended time. But that's unrelated to fall damage. You only die if you're landing more than 20m below where your original height was. I'm sure the people routing Elden Ring know that, but not everyone making videos about speedruns knows that piece of trivia.

    I had always thought that things happen for a reason, I have been playing elden ring more than usual these days and these last days I have been really down and well to make me feel better I was playing watching videos too about how to get weapons from weapons I went to spells from spells to crazy stuff players did from that last video to speed runs from speed runs I started looking how speed runners do those glitches and from all the videos I ended up watching this one God I am glad I did, this is the first time I watch one of this guys videos, and besides being entertaining and really explanatory it was also really helpful emotionally. I saw that other people is feeling like me but honestly this is really amazing that how from one video that I wasn't looking for emotional support changed a lot, u said the words that not all people tell the people who is not feeling well I thank you for that. At 42:15 I'm pretty sure the reason why you fly backwards instead of forwards during this megazip is because in most games, when you collide with an object, they game doesn't just say "STOP" and set your speed to zero. It's pretty frequent in games for collision to work on walls by actively pushing your character *away* to reduce clipping or becoming stuck inside whatever you're touching, so I am assuming that because your character is going *so* fast, the game freaks out and sets this value to push you back to an absurdly high amount. Just guessing though, I have no idea how From Software's physics engine behaves.

    2 things I want to correct, as many others have said but I just wanted to get them in one comment for ease; 1) The Stormveil Castle skip is 100% intended, normally you just go left and follow the path instead of jumping the ledge in order to get to Liurnia of the Lakes. 2) Fall damage in Elden Ring is based on how far you fall, measured in the in-game units of measure, which is roughly 1-to-1 equal to a meter. Once you fall for 16 units of measure you will start to take fall damage as a percentage of your maximum health, and if you fall 20 units of measure you will instantly die when you land. The game also takes note of the Y-Value you where at when you left the ground, to start counting units of measure (Torrents double jump and jumping in general do increase your initial Y-Value as well but I'm not 100% sure on how the game calculates it). And the game has a failsafe such as that if you fall for ~12 seconds the game will autokill you. However, this timer can be reset by doing certain animations such as attacking.

    Seeker choosing not to do the animation "skip" quit outs for the demonstration really strengthens my opinion that the game should switch to RTA or do something else to mitigate these. Going slower to make the timer seem faster is one of my biggest pet peeves with speedruns

  • @CrashTestCollin

    @CrashTestCollin

    Жыл бұрын

    The reason they use in-game time isn't so they can go faster by quitting out. They use in-game time so that the run isn't hardware dependent, since the game time doesn't tick during load screens. It just so happens that it's also faster according to in-game time to quit out instead of waiting for doors to open. Since it's technically faster, that's how they do it. Since quitting out to reset enemy aggro, reset the state of the world, return to default spawn points through exploits, and even to skip animations is a feature of the game, it makes sense to allow it in a speedrun. Banning the practice of quitting to menu at all would drastically alter the run itself, and only banning its use to skip animations is arbitrary as heck. I guess you could try to make a "No-Quit-Out%" category, though there's a reason that's not already a thing.

  • @papabaddad

    @papabaddad

    Жыл бұрын

    @@CrashTestCollin I'm aware of why they don't use in game time, but imo it would be better to have load times be hardware dependent, or instead of having load times auto pause timing, have them pause but add some amount of time to the timer, perhaps whatever the fastest hardware available achieves for its load times. Having no punishment for quit out leads to horrendous abuse of the timer which makes for a speedrun thats agonizing to watch, and seems annoying as hell for runners as well. Theres a reason they skipped many quit outs for this video, they're annoying and everyone knows it, and i don't think we should be shrugging it off like we've already come to the best solution

  • @CrashTestCollin

    @CrashTestCollin

    Жыл бұрын

    @@papabaddad Well it's never good to assume that you've come to the best solution in any situation. There will likely always exist better solutions. I'm explaining why your solutions are worse than the current ones. Timing with RTA makes the top of the leaderboards inaccessible to all but those with access to the highest performance hardware. This is why the restricted and unrestricted categories are separated to begin with. The unrestricted run exists because it is so much faster than a run that doesn't use the zip glitch. However, since it requires certain hardware, other Any% categories exist that more people can participate in. An RTA-based category would be similarly restrictive but without actually changing the run at all aside from removing some quit-outs (not all of them). Your other suggestion basically just sounds like using in-game time but with extra steps to avoid some of (again, not all of) the quit-outs that are used during runs. You can try to create another category for runs like that if you want, but I don't see it being very popular.

    This is my favorite resource for learning the elden ring any%, I always send people this video when they start out because it’s so useful for general pathing and most glitches used in the any% run. It doesn’t teach you necessarily how to do the glitches, but it introduces everything you need to know and with a little help from the discord and extra research, it makes learning the run so much easier. This was the first thing I used and I’m currently top 15 any% (restricted) with about a minute I could easily save (lack of willpower to actually do it though). Thanks tomatoanus and seeker, I could not have done it without this video. Edit: I'm now 14th any% and have surpassed seeker
