I liked joy fine. We’re forgetting we’re looking into the mind of a kid, so yeah the emotions will be extreme in certain areas. Bet if she was a teen, sadness, disgust and anger would have taken over while joy and fear would’ve been tossed out.

I personally love this theory. I think it fits in with Inside Out so well and it works so well. Because Riley's emotions are just Riley after all, so the whole movie is about Riley suppressing sadness in order to make her parents happy. Joy is depicted as the overbearing leader of Riley's emotions, but in truth, it's just Riley trying hard to feign happiness to see if it will make her feel better. The movie is about her (and Joy, metaphorically speaking) learning that Sadness is just as important as any other emotion. And it's okay to cry from time to time. Don't be afraid to express your true feelings just because it would others happy, that's the moral. This is exactly I think this theory works so well, y'all. I think Riley is definitely a lost soul at some point because she loses her ability to feel any emotion or to enjoy life like she normally does. I seem to get the impression she develops depression in the movie, which is kinda like a lost soul. Good job, guys. This theory totally adds up.

Sadness and Joy are probably the 2 most important emotions in life. You can live without disgust, fear and anger is important but not the most necessary, however you'll be very depressed without joy or sadness.

@@RGC_animation They are important, but I don't think any are more important than the others. We need them all and as a balance. You can't really live without any of them. At least not happily and healthy. I mean imagine if you didn't have fear. You would do dumb stuff and definitely get yourself killed.

Personally, as someone with depression and anxiety, I felt lost souls are often people who are lost in their depression (and I think the banker isn't consumed with the need to make a trade, but because his depression is so severe he can only do what he thinks he's expected to do). The same with Riley, I always saw her darkness being deep depression setting in, but she finally allows herself to feel everything which prevents her from becoming a fully lost soul.

This movie is great at depicting a major depressive episode. Thankfully she was able to finally express her sadness to her parents and they listened and supported her. During a depressive episode one can feel empty and can feel like they have lost themselves. It is like losing your soul because you lose your sense of self and it doesn’t feel like you can ever get it back. You definitely can get yourself back and even a better version of yourself because now you know what to do or not do when you are sad. Thanks for sharing this video!

I think it’s really interesting how the guy who was too fixated on his sales job (the example we get for a lost soul) look like what we’d call a “mid-life crisis” which is rather looked down upon and ridiculed - even though it seems like he’s actually reclaiming his life in that scene, and his joy in general. Really makes you think, I guess.

Another connection between the two films. The patches in Soul that each soul earns before getting their Earth Patch can easily be an allegory for the bases of each Island in Inside Out. The Islands of Riley's Personality are what the individual is passionate about and are "formed" from core memories of any emotion (and can combo into bigger and better islands throughout life), but I'm willing to bet that Riley's original 5 Islands are an EXACT MATCH to her "Soul's" first 5 Personality Patches. The Earth Pass is, as established, simply a desire to experience life and connect with it through our emotions... I.E. Inside Out's "Headquarters." The Earth Pass Patch (when first earned) lights up with glowing lines connecting each Personality Patch to the Earth Pass and each Island is connected to Headquarters with a glowing line. Also, more circles...

I think that it might have only become the intent of the writers once they made soul, as in they created Inside Out, and spun a few of the ideas in a different direction, and with the creation of Soul, they recontextualized and actively shaped parts of Inside Out that were left vague

  • @DogFlamingoXIII

You're a lost soul, when you've essentially zoned out of your life and are focused on the action, such as your art or investing. Riley was greyed out, becasue she was experiencing disassociation, which is a state where you disappear into your mind at the exclusion of your sensory information, usually in a time of emotional trauma (or during times like dealing with the aftermath of trauma, like people experiencing PTSD). One is due to hyper focus on something in your mind, and one is lack of focus because of your reaction to trauma. I can see why you got them confused, but they are almost opposite states.

And another thing to add on from what I'm getting you are saying that Riley may have emotional trauma. What I got from the bord starting to fade out was that she was about to going to a depression why are you don't connect with your emotions. And trauma has been said to linked to depression. This might be outdated information or I heard it wrong but it does seem to reconnect what you're saying.

I think there is partial truth to this, but overall I do believe that Riley lost her soul. I just think the way she lost it doesn’t line up with what the movie soul says. Soul says the individual is overly obsessed with something, but Riley’s emotion (joy) is overly obsessed with something; not Riley herself. I know that all of Riley’s emotions are apart of her, but still, just my opinion.

Agreed. This movie does hit harder when you have kids and the meaning changes as they get older. I have a teenager now and I really felt a lot watching this recently. In a good way I guess since it keeps you in touch and helps you reach them during their periods of sadness (especially since the pandemic). Not that it’s only the movie but it does remind you that your child is human and you’ve been where they are. As simple as it sounds, it’s easy to forget sometimes.

Riley wasn't obsessed with returning her old home. Anger convinced her that she needs to be there to feel better, to get her best friend, old school and old life back. Plus everything was going wrong in the new home so it felt like the last solution to save her happiness. So it's not that Riley became soulless, she became depressed and felt trapped. That's what the greyness and blocking out her emotions is.

wow, a deep analysis of Inside Out contextualised with Soul is so wild for me. I was the same age as Riley when the film came out. It was the first thing I saw that got me to deeply think about films and myself and my mental health. I would not be nearly as happy now if Inside Out didn't teach me about sadness.

I love the scene when Joy lets Sadness touch the core memories, and you see them get mixed. I thought that the blue and yellow ones were "Tears of Joy" which are kind of bittersweet. An example for me would be memories of my Grandparents. They are joyful, but also sad because I miss them.

Inside Out is actually my favorite Disney movie because it is the one I most relate to. As someone who has struggled with anxiety, depression, bipolar, and other mental health issues, the movie really feels like a representation of what I sometimes go through in day-to-day life. Not just fighting with my emotions, but fighting with other sides of me that want to be expressed in their own ways. Sometimes when you can't express them the way you want to or the way they want to, it makes you feel lost or broken and it feels like nothing you can do can fix anything. I sometimes wonder if Riley has more than just anxiety in these moments, but we would never know until she grew up and we see a possible sequel.

When I was eight my family moved from Florida to Washington state...which is about as far as we could have moved while still being in the same country...and not going to Alaska or Hawaii." ...my dad has even joked that when we were in FL, if we lived any farther south, we would have been in the ocean. 🌊

I dunno, as a person who suffers from depression, it feels like depression could easily be seen as being a lost soul. Depression IS, after all, often being disconnected from life. Or at least includes it, or tends to cause it.

Yes, but that isn't a reason to hate her character, not saying you said that since you didn't, I'm saying I've seen other people say it. People hate her so much while forgetting that's it's the point of the entire plot and her character development that she is the cause of the conflict, not out of malice but of ignorance and denial.

How would you explain how the core memories created in/by life dictate personality when we see personalities being assigned before life in Soul?

  • @sayyidassons9332

    @sayyidassons9332

    2 жыл бұрын

Core memories don't dictate personality, per se. I mean, having an embarrassing memory of school didn't turn Riley awkward, did it? The badges from soul are basic traits, while the islands of personality are basically manifestations of things that Riley likes doing or thinking about, with the basic traits usually having something to do with WHY she likes those things. A caring and loving and extroverted soul would have a stable family island in all likelyhood, but the memories of being with the family can keep you from expressing those traits, or encourage it.
