HOW SORORITY RECRUITMENT WORKS (SDSU) | Rachel Silva

EDIT. PLEASE READ!
I filmed this video prior to attending my sorority's polish week and did not know that Panhellenic changed some of its terminology until after this video was well along its way to success. For the sake of preventing confusion, I will correct my verbage here. :)
- Sororities make "selections" and vote as a chapter. We do not r̶a̶n̶k̶ girls (and each chapter has a different process!)
- We refer to different sororities as "chapters," and not h̶o̶u̶s̶e̶s̶ (my b!). This is because not every sorority does/ needs to have a chapter house.
- We hold recruitment "events," and not p̶a̶r̶t̶i̶e̶s̶.
END OF EDIT
I would just like to remind you all again that every university's Panhellenic association runs its recruitment process differently, so the themes and time period that my university's recruitment is held over will not be the same as (most likely) any other school. Hopefully this helps you out a little bit, and understanding the general gist of how recruitment is laid out encourages you to go Greek! Like I said, if you have any questions then please feel free to comment or DM me. I'd love to talk to you!

    Hey it’s me I’m back, I asked u questions about fall recruitment but I didn’t get to follow through with signing up bc it’s such a $ and time commitment. I was unsure bc im a junior transfer and it’s already an adjustment. I’m looking into the sororities that typically rush during spring, and I was wondering if it’s common for juniors to rush during spring? I probably need to take an extra year or semester because my major is demanding and I have a lot of classes left so it’s not like I just have my last year to participate too. But yeah I was considering spring recruitment and I was wondering if it’s common for juniors and if it’s hard to join, given that there are less spots? Also do you have any tips? You’re the most helpful person for this on KZread so I had to ask!

    I am SO sorry, I never check my channel activity anymore so it might be more productive to insta DM me! But in regards to your question, spring recruitment is more relaxed than formal recruitment, and it's much easier to get in since not a lot people attend with only select sororities participating. I was a spring, and most of my pledge class were junior transfers so I'd say you're up to par with the usual spring dynamic! Since it's free, I recommend taking advantage of the opportunity. There will be less houses participating since it's based off of if the chapters have any vacancies, but it's still a great opportunity to feel some of them out. If you end up vibing really well with one of the houses, then that's great! But if not, at least you tried, and you can decide from there if ya wanna try fall recruitment when there will be a bigger sorority selection.

    So you’re probably not going to see this bc it’s been too long but, do you think it’d be possible for an international student (a Spaniard studying abroad at SDSU for a year) to get into a sorority in their junior or even maybe senior year? (I don’t know in which I’d be bc my major is really 6 years long so I wouldn’t be graduating and I wanna enjoy my experience in the US). And I’ve got a second question; I’ve seen in different videos that you’d ask people what they were involved in through high school and the first years of college but where I’m from there isn’t such a club culture where as a student you join many, would that affect my possibilities?)

    I’m going to start at SDSU this coming fall and I’m looking to rush, I’m just wondering if this entire process is 5 or 6 days since you mentioned Day 1 is split in two. Also does this happen before school starts or the first week?

    Recruitment happens mid-September, so about 3 weeks into the semester! SDSU wants to make sure that freshman have a chance to settle into their classes before joining Greek life. Recruitment goes from Thursday-Monday, so 5 days! Thursday and Friday are the split up "day 1" :)

  • @yagirlrachel

    This is a hard answer to organize. To put it simply, the formalness of the outfits build each day. At orientation they will briefly outline outfit guidelines for you as there's certain shoe requirements for each day, but I recommend owning a cute pair of sandals, booties, and heels if you're trying to be proactive. The first couple of days are casual and fitted around your style (denim skirts, rompers, sun dresses, etc.) and the final preference night is homecoming/ business meeting formal so a nice bodycon dress and heels. Rules change every year as they work to accommodate PNMs more, and outfit requirements vary by school!

    Hey girl, what are your tips for conversation and how to make a very forced conversation situation flow naturally? Thanks!

  • @yagirlrachel

    @yagirlrachel

    7 жыл бұрын

    I have to be completely honest, you are going to have at least two conversations over the course of recruitment that are gonna be plain awkward! That's what lets you know that the house isn't for you. I had this exact problem when I went to (what I thought was) my dream house during recruitment. I kept hitting dead ends and felt like I was talking to a wall. Don't think that there's something wrong with you if you have an off day or conversations just don't seem to be clicking at a particular house. That being said, my sorority trains us in "pocket questions" during our polish week, which are a couple of solid questions that you keep in your pocket just in case a conversation starts heading south or you find yourself running out of things to say. Personally, I like to keep it creative, such as "if you could travel to place, debt and worry free, where would it be?" because it's different from the usual questions that you're going to be answering 392034 times that day and will help you stand out. Although you will only be talking to each girl for an average of 3-5 minutes, it definitely helps to have one emergency question in there just in case!

  • @yagirlrachel

    @yagirlrachel

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'd also like to add that it's our job as the recruiters to keep the conversation going because we ultimately need to learn the most about you to rate you at the end of the day, so it really is on us to keep conversation flowing/ quality.

    Once you've received a bid, you're in! It sucks that you're going to have to miss the festivities, but it doesn't mean that you've dropped. Just make sure your Rho Gamma knows that you won't be able to attend so that they can pass the info on to your new chapter. Someone will still contact you to give you the new member info that you've missed and you'll just pick up the next week at all of your ritual events/ new member meetings!

    I honestly couldn't think of any material thing you could do other than upping how you look. Beauty really does matter a lot to those top sororities, and when it's time to get picky, everyone starts stalking PNM instagrams to see what they're about! If you're really trying to get up there, as terrible as this sounds, I'd invest in good makeup skills and high quality clothes.

    hi i'm not sure if you still see comments on this video, but i'm going to sdsu this fall and I was wondering how recruitment works if we have classes? like is it during the full day, or in the afternoons.. and what if you have class?

  • @yagirlrachel

    @yagirlrachel

    Hi! This year recruitment is being held over labor day weekend, so it'll hopefully be less stressful than usual. Normally, recruitment runs Thurs-Mon (evenings) with a majority of the events taking place on the weekend because they under no circumstances will let you miss class for recruitment. If you have an evening class then you can crash another event that you're free for. I'm assuming this will only be made easier with a three day weekend. It is still tiring though because you go from class to sorority house, so make sure to hydrate and take care of yourself!

    Rachel Silva k cool thankyou so much for the response! i have another question about greek life and since you graduated from sdsu (i think you graduated right? idk i guesses based on the date of this video) it’s nice to get advice from someone who went through it. anyway, is greek life at sdsu expensive? i know they have the $60-$90 feel to sign up to rush but as the year continues what kind of costs are involved? and are there ways to lessen them by not buying the fanciest formal dresses or by choosing not to do certain social function... and i know there are dues for each chapter in the thousands amount, so they expect that upfront or is that like a sum of all the expenses they think you’ll encounter during the year? sorry if this question makes no sense lol, i’ve been trying to find the answer online but i’ve read so many different things

  • @yagirlrachel

    @yagirlrachel

    6 жыл бұрын

    So the short answer: there's no straightforward information for a reason. Each sorority has a different baseline of dues set by their national chapter (can range from $1000-$2000 a semester) that make it too difficult to give PNMs a straightforward answer of "this is how much to expect." Individual chapters also have their own autonomy of if they want to include things such as required shirts and formal fees within the dues or if they want members to pay that in addition as the time comes. For example, my sorority charged the baseline (~$200 a month) and then whenever we needed new shirts or anything there would be an additional $15 charge for the month, making it a bit unpredictable. I *believe* another sorority doesn't do monthly dues at all, they just have their members pay the $2000 upfront at the beginning of the semester so they don't have to deal with it again. They will give you a sheet at orientation with the semester dues for each sorority (because there IS a big difference between $1000 and $2000 dues but sororities that expensive exist) and then that will hopefully steer you in a direction of looking at the sororities you can afford.

    I lived on campus when I was going through recruitment and once you're on the sorority end, you don't get breaks in between events so I sadly don't have a good personal statement to give ya! Campus is, however, always open so I know in general girls will go to the lib or sit at Starbucks in between their events/ maybe crash some of their friends' dorms. You also make friends within your recruitment groups and will probably hang out with them since you're all running on the same schedule!

    tubby28 I thiiink for bid day everyone met at 12? They did the reveals and then around 3pm you’d break off and “run home” to your new sorority sisters. The reveal is definitely early afternoon. After that, every sorority plans their own bid day activities that usually involves going off-campus and runs later into the night. My sorority at least would have girls set aside to pick up anyone who was coming late, but idk if all chapters do this!

    Rachel Silva oh ok thank u! My schedule changed anyway. I was wondering how common is it for girls to do the whole thing and just not get a bid? If I don’t go out of my way to be rude or not show up to a house

  • @yagirlrachel

    @yagirlrachel

    5 жыл бұрын

    There have definitely been cases of girls getting dropped from every house, but that is rare. As long as you're friendly and genuine you should get a bid (although it might not be to the house you wanted). The only real way I've seen people get dropped is if they're a lil too weird, are rude to one of the houses, or try to mess with the process and get preemptively dropped from houses they don't want.

    Can you choose to commute in a sorority and how much would it cost to do that?

  • @yagirlrachel

    @yagirlrachel

    5 жыл бұрын

    Suuuper late so I hope this is still relevant, but this answer depends on your region really. Here in California, it's very optional. I was a commuter! There's a lack of real estate, so only ~30 of the girls actually live in the sorority house and it's a first come first serve on leases. It'll be cheaper if you don't live in as you'll only be paying your membership dues and not rent. I know that it is common where Greek life is larger in the South/ Midwest for sororities to make their new members move out of the dorms and into the sorority house so that everyone's living together, so I'd just ask around at your school! If the rules aren't as extreme as making everyone live in, then you most likely don't have to.

    Do you know how the process works for fraternities? Is it the same general process or totally different?

  • @yagirlrachel

    @yagirlrachel

    5 жыл бұрын

    Guys have a waaaaay chiller process. Their rush process resembles that of sorority spring recruitment because every fraternity hosts rush events (basically them just having an open house for 2 hours) where any guy interested in rushing can show up and mingle. Unlike sorority recruitment, the process isn't as organized and you're not mandated to attend every house which is great because you're not wasting your times on houses you're not interested in, but difficult if you're not already familiar with your campus' frats. This is why frats push so hard to host pre-rush parties, wear their letters on campus, and get the word out about their rush events prior to rush week. Pay attention to those events and take advantage of the lax entry policies for their parties during pre-rush since it'll be hard to get in after! If you already know what houses you're interested in, then great. If you have no idea what the Greek life is like on your campus, then I'd recommend starting your research now so you can eliminate what houses you don't even wanna try for. I'd recommend choosing 2-3 frats that you're interested in and planning your rush week around their events, as they often all hosts theirs around the same time and you want to show up to at least 2 so that their members have a chance to get to know you/ memorize your face. The final two rush events in the week are invite-only, so you wanna plan your time really wisely so that they get to know you well-enough to send you an invite!

    Monica Lewinsky oh lordy I really do apologize for replying uhhh 5 months late. KZread doesn’t notify me for reply comments! For some reason, I forgot that they would be painful because they weren’t metal braces so THAT was surprising. Similar to a tightening, you get a new, straighter Invisalign retainer thing every 2 weeks and I remember not eating solids for the first 2 days after I got a new one. Looking back, the pain wasn’t that bad (kinda like being sore after working out for the first time all year), but having to carry around a bag to store my retainer and brush my teeth after every meal was annoying. That and you could still see the Invisalign/ the realignment dots glued to your teeth in photos. Idk, I’d go with braces. If you’re not dedicated to it then it can be really easy to neglect wearing the Invisalign/ properly cleaning it toward the end
