How ‘So Far Gone’ Changed The Rap Game | Genius News
Музыка
During a Twitter rant last December, Kanye West revealed that Drake reached out to someone on his team to request a sample clearance for “Say You Will,” a track from his 2008 album, '808s & Heartbreak.' Drake used the beat from Kanye’s “Say You Will” for “Say What’s Real,” a standout cut from his seminal 2009 mixtape, 'So Far Gone.' Kanye claimed he denied the clearance, but it’s notable that Drake would ask to clear a sample for that song when he and West weren’t seeing eye to eye.

Drake was really the first artist that demonstrated the ability to be both an R&B and rap artist. And not on different songs, on the same song. That's what changed the game... Along with the moody night drive rap that he's known for. Like it or not, he changed music forever and will go down as one of the greatest.

Before that Mix tape, fans and artists a like felt like they needed to be signed by a label and put out an album to make their break in Hip-pop. After So far gone, almost every rapper at that time was copying drakes formula of putting out a mix tape of album quality and pushing to make their mark even while unsigned. I can remember clearly when that was happening, and nothing was the same after that. It changed a lot of how music is made today
