How Slow can LEGO go? | Comparisons

Ғылым және технология

Hi everyone,
I've seen a lot of videos about making a car as fast as possible, but barely any about making it slow (for a good reason). If you just want to know how to get more torque, I'm showing some designs, but I had a lot of fun (inspired by the one and only Randall Munroe) driving this to the theoretical minimum and searching for comparisons along the way.
I hope you enjoy that different type of video,

    Medium motor has .12 Newton meters of force, 1 Newton can in a frictionless environment can move .225 pounds. A semi truck fully loaded can be 80,000lbs. 80,000lbs/.225= 355,555 newton's of force needed. 1.1bill x .12newtons of the motor is 132 million newton's. Or 371x the force needed.

    When using worm gears, I've noticed they always have a little bit of play back and forth on the axle, like they're a tiny bit shorter than two units. That means when a worm gear spins, rather than transmitting torque right away, it has to screw itself up the spur gear maybe a millimeter, until it hits the barrier, and only then can it start driving the next pair. Given the exponential growth of the ratios, the amount of rotations needed to clear this gap also increases. Until every single worm reaches it's "locked up" position, the car can not start moving. How long would it take for the car to start moving in the extreme case where every single worm gear is as far back as possible from it's locked up position?

  • @in1

    @in1

    4 ай бұрын

    That problem should be fixed because I've used an axle with a stopper and the worm drive is pressed against that stopper using the 8 tooth gear. For the last few cars I just assumed there are "no tolerances"

  • @in1

    @in1

    In theory these forces should definitely be big enough, since every transmission 8x-es the strenght. It still wouldn't move anyways though, that's why I've purposefully ignored wear and "wiggle room" in the video.

    so if you can go that slow and it would take a life time (most likely I would be near my death by it moves like a MM) so if it can do that why not reverse witch way the motor gets inputted meaning speed of light?

  • @in1

    @in1

    4 ай бұрын

    Interesting idea, but sadly there's a pretty simple reason why it doesn't work: Having an 8:1 reduction makes the output 8x as strong, but an 1:8 transmission reduces the strength 8x. In other words, there would be no force strong enough to power that car. Especially because screws are designed that they can't be driven backwards.

    3:47 If the speed would be 6 000 000 000 m/s it would actually be 20x the speed of light since the speed of light c≈300 000 000 m/s. 2 * 300 000 000 = 600 000 000, ten times less than the value you claim.

    This is so funny. I rarely comment on KZread videos. I watch it on TV. I don't have the option to comment via my TV. But now I thought, let's tell Mr 2 in 1 Bricking that I like the music and that it has a Pavlovian effect on me. 😂😂 . But I do agree on the longer videos part. And maybe the duration of text information on screen could be a bit longer. Watching you building AND reading the text at the same time is not my strongest point.
