Good explanation. This is how the swing works. But only one remark. If you fix your right knee in the backswing movement and do not straighten it, you load a lot of power in the right thigh muscle which you unload in the release and you get an additional power in the swing. P.S. in the release you straighten the left knee, that’s OK like explained.

This drill done properly is a perfect example of the top of the backswing and impact positions. JUST AWESOME. Whatever simple thing you can do to create ideal positions in the swing is like having the keys to a safe. Easy money!! This drill will be a regular part of my golf routine. Along with your other videos. Wonderful stuff.

Good to do with some light weights or kettlebells as well to add the feel of resistance and build some strength at the same time. Also I think doing it where the "down" hand comes across your chest rather then down to the knee helps with mobility and to translate the actual feel in the swing.

That is a good exercise, however those of us, me included that have serious back issues, the side bend is very hard to do, not only that, I get some serious pain when I do that. Plus at 75 yrs old, simple things get more difficult. What I wouldn't give to be 25 years younger..

Day one, 30 range balls and I had a pretty good feel. Shot 83 and hit several great shots including smoked 3 metals over 200. I’m 70.

I like the idea of the practice with the hands going down to the knees to aid shoulder tilt. Thanks Ali, a great tip to aid that turn.tilt.

totally agree with the stack and `tilt` aspect Ali.. i`ve been gradually also combining that with making sure my hands don`t get above swingplane too which felt weird at first but now feels natural ! ,(i was prone to hitting left to right) thankyou for this great lesson ,👍

Really struggled with this even though I know what it should look like, and it seem so many people are doing it incorrectly. I love the "tilt not turn" phrase as this explains what most people I know misunderstand. Love the exercise as will - will try that later today 🙏🏼

Excellent Video! Thank you. That’s what I’m doing on my irons keeping my left shoulder high causing an outside in swing, coming over the top and my iron shots always go left to right banana ball every time…

Great drill. I am trying to do this during the swing by placing an alignment rod about 2 ft to my right and poking up at 45 degrees. This forces me to bend to bring the club low in the downswing. Yours is a great exercise to do before using the rod. Level shoulders is a big problem for me, hope this helps. Thanks, Ali.

I get somewhat the same results by keeping my hips quite in the first part of the backswing, not turning my shoulders. My right hip has a tendency to go back and up slightly, which turns my left shoulder down a little. I'm 70, so this is a good video for younger golfers. But, you would be surprised by how far you can hit a 7 iron by just saying to yourself "don't turn".

Excellent point on shoulder turn, makes so much sense. Came up with some issues when I practice the shoulder tilt especially on the down swing. I think we need to fine tune the amount of tilt for each club - the long, medium and short. I tilted on the down swing with a driver by almost the same amount as the wedge and the driver crashed into the ground way behind the ball destroying the shot as well as my trail shoulder. Any drills to get over this?

Great drill, tried on range with 8 iron. Much better center contact, ball flight much higher, and straighter to the target. Can tell from sound at impact am much closer to 'flushing' the hit. Assume also works with fway woods & driver? Thanks!

Great drill! And very easy to do everyday without the club. I wonder slightly why almost 90 mph clubhead speed only gives 158 yards carry. Should be meters with that swing speed.

Good explanation of tilt. However? How do you control the right elbow? Seems like this drill will promote the right elbow to get "sucked" in behind the player.

Hey bud. Will this cure over the top also as I find no matter what im quick to throw the right shoulder. This looks more like the shoulder throws down to the target line ( in front of the right foot) as opposed to turning the right shoulder to actual target.

As someone who has played sports for over 60 years, the way you get better at a sport is by playing it and figuring out your best individual way of getting your best individual performance. You can do as many drills as you wish. There are very simple instructions for finding and improving a golf swing. Start by keeping your front arm straight and your back elbow close to your body-this will establish your swing plane.

Now, I am confused. Agree on the tilt of the shoulders and need for side bends. Question is how are such created. Some instructors talk about using ground pressure from pressing feet into the gtound, this instructor seems to place emphasis on the bends originating from the shoulders and makes no mention of ground forces.

  • @simonng678

I think it's because his talk is more about not thinking about "turning the shoulders" and what you want to feel when you are pivoting in the golf swing. If you try this drill he's doing (it's a great drill, btw), you can try to feel the difference between initiating the pivot of your feet pressure vs just the upper body. The feet pressure is what you want. When I do this, I feel my feet creates this stretch on my sides and then that causes the shoulders to do the tilting for me.
