    I’ve been making my own martinis for over 20 years, and I greatly prefer them shaken. They can get much colder, and I like the ice chips in them. It does dilute it a bit, which I like, and keeps it tasting from like I’m just drinking straight gin. In fact, I usually let it sit on the counter before I pour it while I get the glass ready with olives, which lets it dilute just a bit longer. Everyone has their preferences, taste wise, and I defy you to tell me I’m “doing it wrong”. I’ll spit in your eye if you do.

  • @peterclarke7240

    I used to think that, too, but there's another reason that actually makes more sense (bond had a fearsome tolerance for alcohol anyway, at least according to the books, owing to the absurd amount he drank every day): So, in casino royale, bond talks about preferring vodka made from grain rather than potatoes because it was less oily. Prior to 1960, most vodka was made using potatoes, which means most vodkas at the time of casino royale would have been potato-based. Shaking a vodka martini helped to make it taste less oily, even though it also diluted it with chipped ice, and that, apparently, is why he got into that particular habit. Allegedly.

    Ice smashed into smaller bits whilst shaking vastly increases its surface area, increasing the area in contact with the warmer fluid and the speed it melts. Also residuals pieces of ice will come out in the drink if not sifted, these will further increase the dilution. @@sjl197

  • @Delenne_Russell

    @Delenne_Russell

    @@sjl197 You're technically correct, but sloshing the minutely warmer drink across the ice repeatedly, rather than just letting it sit, speeds up the melting of the ice, releasing more water into the drink than if the ice melted just sitting. Both ways will dilute the drink, shaking does it faster by forcibly removing the cold water layer from the surface of the ice and mixing it with the drink, re-exposing the new ice surface to the warmer drink (drink mix if that's what you insist because of the mixed in water). Stirring the drink will force the removal too, though not as quickly and with much less "bruising" of the alcohol.

    Which, to reiterate, the stirring with ice will eventually dilute it anyhow, just as sitting with ice would only faster, shaking just does it faster than both methods. I suspect in this situation the "bruising" you write of was desired for his particular preference, in addition to the dilution, or else Bond could have asked that it have ice stirred in if the dilution was all that was desired.
