honestly, this was a blessing in disguise since it allowed more companies to give games a shot (xbox was literally an example of this) and overall allowed more variety in the gaming market because hey, all competition is good competition after all.

Nintendo is lucky to have strong franchises like Mario and Zelda which were still popular and critically acclaimed, and not to mention Pokemon which came out at the perfect time when Sony was starting to strongly outshine Nintendo's popularity. All of Sega's APIs flocked to Sony, leaving only Sonic which was releasing some really dodgy games by then.

@@alex_b_9850 That's not entirely true. Sega had good 3rd party support from Capcom, EA, Eidos (Tomb Raider started development on Saturn) Midway, Taito and Psygnosis. When Final Fantasy VII came out for the PS, the PlayStation's sales hit the roof. That's when 3rd party support died off for the Saturn.

in an alternate world : Sony and Nintendo stay together, creating the wildly successful Nintendo Play-Station Console. Being the new generation, the console sells like hotcakes. With less alternatives than what there should have been, the Sega Saturn does better than it did in our timeline, however is a far second to the Nintendo Play-Station. With the success of the Play-Station, the pair continues their partnership with complete domination of the market in mind. In the lifetime of the Play-Station, Sony would push for more adult games for the Play-Station, however would have push back by Nintendo. On one hand, there was a whole demographic to appeal to : Teenagers, and adults. On the other hand, they could face yet another panic over the maturity of video games. They come to a compromise, with the Play-Station having some leeway for more violence, but nothing overtly risque was allowed. This had two effects. While yes, they had drawn in more people, parents and guardians would have a line blurred between the two companies. There was no exact "Clean, Friendly" console, and a more "Gritty, Mature" console. Now, it was just Sega and Nintendo-Sony. This aids Sega for the younger demographic, although them losing appeal to the ones which they formerly catered to was troubling. Nonetheless, Sega pushed through to the sixth generation. They released the Sega Dreamcast, and at first, it was a success. There was nothing else to pit against it for some time, allowing it to do well momentarily. This was until the duo came to turn the state of the Dreamcast into a nightmare. All the Intellectual Properties developed by both Nintendo, and Sony (Of course, beginning to differ from that of our timelines) blew any chance of Sega winning that generation up. The Nintendo-Sony Play-Station 2 had everything. The games market was dominated, and it had all the capabilities of various other media players. Music, Movies, it even had a niche as a personal computer for some. But, as with the fifth generation, the lack of any true competition would be their saving grace. The Sega Dreamcast, compared to this timeline, was far more successful, but also compared to this timeline was crushed far more. The Dreamcast miraculously just barely edged out as a profit rather than a loss. Microsoft took interest in the growing games market. It was no longer just a toy, but an experience. All sorts of experiences for all ages, and Microsoft saw value in what was compared to now, untapped. Microsoft in the sixth generation did not release any console, they feared they would be a company who birthed a forgotten joke of a console. Thrown in with the ranks of the Apple-Bandai Pippin, the TurboGrafx, the 3DO. Observing Sega's trend of survival, although nothing compared to the games behemoth that was Nintendo-Sony, they felt confident that they would make some sort of gain, even the smallest, by partnering with Sega. On it's last legs, Sega Of America would accept the offer proposed to them by Microsoft. Sega Of America found it to be the last hope for Sega. This was one of the United States largest technology companies, ones who specialized in computers, coming to Sega for help. In any other scenario, Sega Of Japan would refuse this, but swallowing their pride, they would heed the word of S.O.A. Joining forces, Sega-Microsoft would begin development on a new console- the Sega Apollo. This console would, as the name suggests, be a giant leap for the company. Though there was minor online aspects to the sixth generation, the Apollo. The Seventh Generation would see the dawn of the online age, and a step-up for graphics. 1/? Side Notes : If anyone actually sees this, or cares for it, and even likes it, tell me and maybe I'll keep it going. I've had ideas about arcades and the handheld race.

Thank you! Finally somebody has mentioned that it wasn't all because of Nintendo that Sony started the PlayStation. In fact thanks to an article I read on IGN way back in like 2010 I think, maybe earlier I had already known that Sony did approach Sega to work together on a console and it didn't pan out. Also according to the article Sega apparently was also approached by Microsoft and Microsoft was rejected and ultimately made the Xbox although nobody talks about that so I don't know if the one with Microsoft is true.

Imagine if an alternate scenario where Sony and Nintendo went through with their deal and somewhere down the line, they get Sega involved too. Now imagine Nintendo and Sega being bought by Sony, thus ending Nintendo and Sega’s bitter rivalry for good and Sony goes on to hold a monopoly on the console gaming market. Then imagine somewhere down the line, Microsoft decides to fight back against Sony’s monopoly by introducing the Xbox. I don’t think anyone would come out of this scenario unscathed.

there are some rumours suggest that nintendo rejected their partnership with Sony for reasons , one of them is that , president of nintendo of japan met with some one of those who work at Sony's probably some one who is a very highly regarded person at the company , and as they talk , that guy was bold enough to claim many things that nintendo did not like including that Sony will take control of developing nintendo franchises like mario , zelda , and metroid and many more , which give nintendo a bit of a knowledge over Sony's personality , which has to do with Sony having a massive ego of thinking they own every thing of what ever they are working at , like working on game hard ware or what ever that could be related to any deal they make like nintendo franchises that could have games released on that add on that nintendo rejected from Sony, as for sega , it could be also for similar reasons , but possibly also that Sony was taking advantage of then to know secrets of what ever hard ware they were producing , what ever is arcades or game console , but these are just some informations that i heard about , you might need to do research to know about it better

I don't think this is a "Hindsight is 20/20" deal, it was genuinely just a really scummy move from Nintendo to ditch Sony like that, and the outcome of pissing off a much larger corporation with more resources than you after giving them basically a crash course in how to beat you in the market was EXTREMELY predictable. Especially paired with Nintendo refusing to use discs with the N64, this is entirely stuff that was so easy to avoid that even people at the time were facepalming over Nintendo's decisions. The stupidest part is how they were concerned about Sony backstabbing them and honestly thought that doing the backstabbing first would make Sony throw their hands up and go "Well, guess we have to leave them alone now!"

  • @G.L.999

Sony indirectly "forced" Nintendo into ditching them from behind the scenes; as Sony actually designed said contract between them to be rejected! Creating the 'Habsburg Ultimatum' effect. In reality, Sony didn't technically need Nintendo or Sega to enter the video market. Sony just wanted a weakness to exploit to gain media attention to their brand. If Nintendo stuck with Sony, they would've actually 'absorbed' Nintendo into being a 1st party developer for Sony; thus taking Nintendo's independence from them; while getting little profit back(unless Sony handed over full control of the PlayStation brand to Nintendo of course)!

Sony had only just started becoming a massive conglomerate. Until a few years earlier they were known for electronics. Over '87-88 they purchased CBS Records and Columbia Pictures. Ken Kutaragi pestered Nintendo to make a CD-ROM drive for the SNES, but they saw no benefit for games, so he told them software on the drive would be anything BUT games, which finally convinced them, albeit reluctantly. Their mistake was not making sure to have that part put in the contract for the CD-ROM. In early '89 Sony formed their first software wing, Sony Imagesoft. So yeah, Nintendo was right to be concerned. kotaku.com/the-weird-history-of-the-super-nes-cd-rom-nintendos-mo-1828860861 Sony was every bit as scummy if not moreso.

Nintendo’s decisions around this time were just Nintendo being Nintendo. Sega on the other hand really shot themselves in the foot, as SOJ’s business decisions became increasingly unhinged to the point they were outright suicidal. The amount of jealousy and spite they felt towards SOA was massive to the point of ludicrous unprofessionalism, simply because they couldn’t think of the bigger picture and *only* cared about being more popular in their home country. SOA was making all the smart decisions that made Sega what it was, until SOJ actively started doing the exact opposite of everything SOA proposed. It’s a wild ride of a rabbit hole to read into, highly recommend.

Nintendo's biggest problem was how they treated their software partners (a problem they didn't fully correct until the Wii). Sony offered them all much more favorable publishing terms, particularly not limiting the amounts of games they could release and charging them much lower publishing fees (even waiving them for smaller companies), on top of providing them with easier hardware to work with, good development kits, and, of course, the large capacity of CD-ROM. Unsurprisingly, they all mostly ditched Nintendo during the 5th generation. Also, Sony attracted a number of new companies into making console games. Probably the single biggest reason the PS1 and PS2 absolutely dominated, they had LOTS of developers making lots of games for them. Nintendo managed to survive only because their first party titles make them vast amounts of money, and they make a point of never selling their hardware at a loss (even when this means unnecessarily hindering their machines' capabilities). Sony might not have driven Nintendo out of the console business, but at least Nintendo learned their lesson.

Yes Nintendo were a tad arrogant during the N64 and GameCube era they thought that developers wouldn’t leave them but oh boy that fire back quickly also the GB line also help Nintendo alongside the Mammoth popularity of Pokémon which still makes them a ton I mean a ton of money but yeah they sorta learn their lesson with the Wii kinda and then the U but Nintendo wants u to forget about that and now they seem to finally have found their balance with the Switch which in many ways the like PS1 and PS2 a robust library of games a affordable price and a massive amount of support from 3rd party developers hey they even got square back despite square making fun of them in the 90s but hey time heals all wounds and 135 mil units sold also

Imagine a world were Nintendo and Sony joined forces that would have been dangerous for the competing gaming companies. Super Mario Odyssey in 5k on PS5 now that would be amazing. I love this story of the biggest mistake in gaming history. Also Sony was dominating other forms of entertainment the risk wasn't that big for Nintendo or Sega because even If It somehow failed Sony would move on and Nintendo and Sega would have continued without Sony. I would love to hear Sony, Nintendo and Sega ceo's being asked this what If scenario If they did go 100 % on working together to see what they would say these days. Cool video. ^_^

As grand as the PlayStation brand is, I don’t think a partnership would have been a great idea to begin with. People tend to overlook Nintendo’s side and gloss over to Sony’s side of the story, but the truth is, if the partnership did go through: Then Sony would be the sole company to take over profits made on the Play-Station with Nintendo making very little money on that unreleased platform in return, which yes, if a game like Super Mario or Zelda appeared on the Super CD format, that profit would be awarded to Sony and not Nintendo.

Not really relevant to the video, but Sony wasn't the only company Sega passed up on collaborating on a console with. Microsoft also approached Sega to co-develop a console while the Dreamcast was being designed. But Sega turned them down. Of course, Microsoft then went on to develop the Xbox. So, Sega contributed to not one, but two new competitors entering the home console market.

As a longtime Sega gamer, I have a particular vendetta against Sony for their Playstation consoles and feel the Sega Saturn could have done a lot better if Sony hadn't interfered. If the rumor that the CEO of Sega of Japan said that Sony has no business in the video game market is true, then I'd have to side with him; Playstation consoles rely way too heavily on third-party support (Sega and Nintendo have the decency to make their own games) and their button scheme is different from every other major console on the market.

Wait so Sony did not belong but what about all the others would applied and failed. If a company believes that can contribute and be successful in a new industry, then they should be allowed to try. Sega only has themselves to blame for their downfall, Sega was arrogant and underestimated Sony and the got beaten badly. Sega can't even make good Sonic games meanwhile Sony making GOTY contender games. Sony makes their own games that why they have studios are first party. Sony makes far better games than Sega. Sony button scheme was different because they wanted to be different unlike Sega that was a wannabe Nintendo. Sega Japan made several bad decisions while Sega America wanted to work with Sony. Sony was just far better than Sega respectfully.
