As far as I remember from about 2012 onwards I don’t remember it happening again I think 2011 may have been the last time that I saw it on TV and the cartoons I did see by that point were quite old stuff like G.I., Joe and Conan the barbarian. Earlier than that when I was watching it more often in the 2000s I mainly watched TV to see sonic X although there were a few other programs before that that I usually saw. I think people also forget that millennials ended up killing Saturday Morning Cartoons with the rise of not only the internet, but also Nicktoons and Cartoon Network. Though you can't blame them since many kids just preferred having cartoons anytime, all the time instead of once a week. Excellent video Stagehands. You broke down the decline of Saturday morning cartoons in a nutshell. One thing to also point out, is, there was a big huge shift for Saturday morning blocks around Fall 2002 specifically, the Fall 2002 season is when One Saturday Morning became ABC Kids, Fox Kids became FOX BOX (which just changed to 4Kids in 2005), Power Rangers eventually moved from FOX to ABC, etc. Kids WB would remain the same but would also start to decline in ratings big time as well. By this point, the big 3 kids networks (Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel) became the dominant source for kids entertainment while Saturday morning blocks were on its way out.

  • @blueblur2273

    @blueblur2273

    Well actually in 2001 Kids WB rebranded as Toonami on Kids WB. This is when they started showing shows from Cartoon Network on the Kids WB. So they did go through some changes also around that time and it makes sense that shortly after ratings for that network began to decline. After all what's the point of watching Kids WB if they are just going to show reruns of shows you already saw on Cartoon Network. I understand that not everyone had cable but sharing shows with CN really took away from the uniqueness of that channel. Less original and exclusivity programming gave you less reason to tune in if you could always catch that programming on another channel.

    I feel like there was another brief one in between One Saturday Morning & ABC Kids. I remember One Saturday Morning going on hiatus for a while, then they came back with mostly girly shows, like Olson Twin Adventures & Lizzy McGuire for a year or two before that was gone for... maybe a year. Then we got ABC Kids. I cannot, for the life of me, remember what that middle lineup was called, though.

    Saturday morning cartoons may have died on traditional broadcast TV (with The CW being the final network to shed their Saturday morning cartoon block), but there have been a few non-traditional attempts at a return of Saturday morning cartoons, including Sinclair Broadcast Group's syndicated Saturday morning cartoon block, KidsClick, as well as the more successful MeTV Saturday Morning Cartoons block on MeTV (a classic TV network specializing in programs from the 1950s to the 1980s), consisting of classic cartoons targeting baby-boomers, generation X and early millennial viewers.

    Yeah man I used to check on KidsClick every now and then in my early teens just because I was so happy seeing someone attempt the Saturday morning formula again, and they had shows based off relatively popular IP like Barbie, Angry Birds, Transformers and Pink Panther. It's a shame it didn't last long. But as someone who's only grown up in a world where Tom and Jerry and especially Looney Tunes were only on TV via Cartoon Network compared to the 90s when , for Looney Tunes at least, was on tons of networks them popping up on MeTV was mindblowing for me and that's honestly my main way of revisiting those shows these days.

It hosted shows like Sonic X, YuGiOh, Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, DBZ, etc. I remember back in 2013-15ish I waited for that block to air on the CW. Man it’s a shame that it’s not longer there but I’m kinda glad to grow up/experience Saturday morning cartoons even if it was at it’s near end. 👍

    I miss both Friday nights & Saturday mornings. I love how television was an event like they celebrated these things & it was so cool! My main watch was Disney's One Saturday Morning, despite having cable, I still enjoyed watching it. Shows like Teacher's Pet was there before anywhere else & it was one of my favorite parts of Saturday morning but I would bounce around a little bit if there were episodes I had seen multiple times already because I did have the Disney Channel so I didn't need to stick to One Saturday Morning & I more so dropped watching the block when they started pulling in the Disney live action shows. One thing I enjoyed was the PBS Kids Bookworm Bunch, I was too old for it when it came out but since they don't do commercials & the cartoons were cute, it was a fun thing to watch if nothing else on the other channels were peaking my interest. The in between of the shows was great, the bumper that played La Bamba with clips from the shows in the Bookworm Bunch lives in my brain. Honestly, I had a ton of fun with the commercials but sometimes they were annoying. It was an event & I totally was excited for it. I also like when they put in little skits or whatever that went along with things. It's probably why I enjoyed Cartoon Cartoon Fridays because they too had little in between things that brought you in & made you apart of the party. General early days of Nicktoons Network before they had commercials was awesome too because they'd have a lot of Nicktoons bumpers as well as short cartoons from my childhood. I was a teenager when we got Nicktoons Network & I watched Nickelodeon during the 90's so seeing shorts from Kablam! & Oh Yeah! Cartoons during the commercial breaks on Nicktoons brought me back. I also enjoyed the ones unfamiliar to me brought in from Canada & stuff such as Doodlez, that was one of my favorites. Network television in general just isn't what it use to be & that's probably for the better but I'll always remember the good times I had watching it. Friday is my favorite day of the week due to the Friday night premiers I watched but I still love the old Saturday mornings. My memories of cuddling up with my dog in front of the fireplace on a chilly Saturday morning watching cartoons will forever be burned into my memory.

Then I switch between there and our Fox channel who first aired the WB and later changed to the Fox Box. And I can’t forget Jetix either it was another Disney type block that aired on ABC Family and was Disneys answer of trying to have there own anime block. Well, with Hearst and Litton taking over Saturday mornings, these kids will remember stuff like Jack Hanna, Recipe Rehab, Pet Vet Dream Team, This Old House Trade School and other informative stuff, and after nearly a decade without modern Saturday morning cartoon blocks, I feel mixed when it comes to this time of the day. I'm happy those kids that watch these E/I blocks at that time of the day are learning something, but they seem to miss out on the "good stuff" like those cartoons you mentioned. I know the rise of video-on-demand subscription-based streaming platforms and video games killed off Saturday morning cartoon blocks, but the spirit lives on with live-streams. I am not the only one who will host a Saturday morning cartoon block at Twitch, but many more Twitch channels have already been doing this for a long time, especially that one Twitch channel mainly dedicated to DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Nicktoons, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network Studios animation. I run Toon Time Theater on Twitch since My Adventures With Superman became a thing, but I've been running the block on Sunday mornings until this month, which I ended up buying the DVD sets to the last 28 Naruto Shippuden episodes. Starting January 20, 2024, I will be broadcasting my very-own cartoon block Saturday mornings from that day on. Though Toonami (a late-night anime block) airs Saturday nights on a cable network, I still want my SatAM blocks to be a branching gap between the officially-ran SatAM blocks of the past and the late-night anime blocks of today. So that means I won't have to abide by FCC Standards and such. I only air an hour of E/I programming per week (1/3 of FCC's requirements) when necessary. Currently, I have Ascendance of a Bookworm and Dr.STONE on my lineup to cover that. SatAM cartoons on official TV stations do exist, but they're all throwback blocks. My weekend morning cartoon block live-streams are a mix of new and old (but not TOO old). I intend to broadcast Lycoris Recoil or other new cartoons this January when I finally make the transition to Saturday mornings. I noticed a couple of mistakes in your video, and I know they weren't intentional. Power Rangers isn't a cartoon, but it's a live-action tokusatsu show that heavily relies on special effects. Like the other tokusatsus that aired at the time, they were placed on cartoon blocks since the tokusatsu medium was at its infancy over here in America. Thundercats is from Rankin-Bass Animated Entertainment and Telepictures.

    I was born in 1999 and I didn’t watch a lot of the classic cartoons other kids my age got to watch. I did see some Saturday morning cartoons like sonic x

    What was the cause of Saturday Morning to decline? Was it due to the existence of the Internet and the complaints from parents?

    It was mostly due to the FCC butting in. And parents wanting more educational garbage

    I still remember how fun it was to get up on saturday mornings and see a lot of fun shows, especially on cartoon network. Nowadays because we don't have saturday morning shows I resort to watching anime.

    This TV era gave me some joy in my daily life. It was nice to get some taste of culture with some of the content they had. Even though some elements were buried.

    110 damn percent my friend, me and my brother will always state we were born in the best era of games, cartoons, musics, movies, and more whether they were reruns or brand new and yes the death or Saturday and Sunday morning cartoons is a tragedy. No kid now will understand that era but I will admit the ability to watch a show or movie when you want is very nice. We've done are best to make due with alternatives like people who make their own shows or other cartoons or animes. Even in college we did the same thing with shows on Cartoon Network but the evening vs Saturday morning isn't the same

    Saturday morning cartoons were something to look forward to after a long week of classes. My parents would treat my siblings and I with pizza or some other junk food on Friday nights while we would watch TV or play video games, then wake up at some point in the morning and put on Fox or ABC because our favorite cartoons were on either channel. My family had cable at the time but I wasn't a big Disney Channel fan until about 2003-2004 when they started coming up with more interesting programming.
