    If I’m not mistaken Tacitus’ Germania which is the earliest source for Germanic culture, although from a distant and flawed perspective, mentions that in Germania there were women who carve strange symbols or letters on pieces of wood and use them in some practice for predicting the outcome of the men’s battles.

    If some Norseman wrote a sentence or statement in runes hundreds of years ago and that message can now be translated, interpretated and understood all these years later then i can see magic in that.

    I'm thankful for this video. As I am with all of yours. I usually am in the camp of "Runes were a phonetic alphabet" in fact you did a video some time ago about that. And I think you've done a good job here explaining how both the hard nose its just an alphabet people and the ones who read too many Wicca books are wrong. To me it's still that runes themselves aren't the magic per say but what is written and then spoken(galdr) or plainly written with intent of the author of the inscription. The one rune that seems to run exception is Tiwaz which is the only rune that has a name of a deity. So whereas it's what is written that makes the magic in this particular case and only it would seem is the rune having the magic itself by invocating a deity. As always I got some wisdom from your videos as usual. Cheers 🍻

    Nice video. I am interested in discussing Near Death Experiences and how they relate to Norse beliefs and Myth. Are there any written accounts of the afterlife from an NDE or some other way through a Norse lens? Why do you think so many modern NDEs feature Christian aspects and Jesus? There are SOME account of pagan-like modern NDEs but not nearly as many as the Abrahamic religions. Does the high amount of Jesus encounters, or angel and heaven encounters in Near Death Experiences affirm that religion or that spirituality? Or is it solely due to collective unconscious bias of our modern era? I would love to know your opinion and would love a video touching on this subject even more

    Thanks for this video, a great reminder of how runes were used for magical intent backed up by sources in the sagas. Would love to see Grimfrost podcast play this video, they recently had an academic on there that was one sided and purely academic arguing there was only one use for runes. Very short sighted! Videos like this and research are the antidote to ignorance and denial.

    I see a video on European pagan religions including Celtic a few videos down. Across the web be careful as what he's referring to here exists in sources on Druidry, the making up of things in modern times. In researching that check the sources for reliability, fact rather than wishful opinion or assumptions.

    I have it, have read it (and did most of her suggested 'rituals' - in fact, I still have the cards. The car-blessing ritual I've also used on a regular basis - with the runes carved into a wooden die as key-ring as well). I.m.o, it's an ok start point; both for learning the runes and getting ideas on how to use them. Is it ideal? No. There is no referal back to the sources as to why she's done this or that ritual. But with an open mind, reading the sources, her book could be a place to start for many. I'm not an official scholar, but I am Norwegian and the family has many connections to finds & museums in Norway.

    He did say there was way too much evidence to cover. He's only going to cite written sources people can access bc he's saying here evidence for multiple uses of runes exist & things can check proves his point. This one is about those who deny that, where & what they can check. & In general many viewers don't have access to the sources you refer to & we're online, many would just argue if they can't access it. It is always up to us to look even farther than any source & he tells us that, & that he does know or tell us everything, & that no one person does know everything or is always right or the total of knowledge. "If you're familiar with my channel..." Watch just a few, we hear that message. He believes in researching, for ourselves multiple sources. And in knowing there's more info than we first see.

    So, sure, archaeologists say "gibberish" but it wasn't necessarily gibberish to who carved it. If a rune has a meaning, whether as just the first letter of a word or as a symbol for a thing, situation or concept, perhaps a line of them -1st letters or so as to picture ideas needs goals requests - is a shortcut so it'll all fit, or a memory aid for chanting or shorthand all-knowing Allfather or Tyr or another was trusted to interpret, in the case of a prayer or petition. Might be to be more private than writing it out, if a personal matter. Might be done bc when you know what you mean no need to carve the whole encyclopedic length. Like we might need to say to people just making shit up & declaring that to be truth & the ONLY truth, something like, GTFOHWTBS 😂 & people can figure it out bc we know we shorten words that way. That behavior is familiar to us, to decode "lol" quickly & proceed to figure out "wtg" means way to go. Just as we can learn what Fehu means beyond a letter. (Some of us, do far. 😂) Maybe the lines of runes people today can't read as a message were either known in general or would be decipherable to others too then. Bc we have sagas & archaeology & know it is just part of the knowledge. They knew more than we do about themselves. They didn't have to spell out the meaning of things to themselves. Some people need it spelled out, 😂 & then published in modern times 😉😂. So that's why those who won't open minds to see what spiritual people can grasp of this still can't see it even in the sagas. "We don't know it means that!" Read it again then! 😂 Zero personal experience with anything spiritual, of seeking guidance or intervention or help from a being or diety or power of any kind. Some people cannot comprehend that desire or instinct or belief system. They cant imagine it working in any way for anyone for any reason. They can only relate to writing. Maybe "we see the world as we are" was written for those people. Some only learn by doing or experiencing, themselves, not from hearing from others who have experienced or learned different things than themselves. The internet is full of them too. Walls Up Brigade. No new info must penetrate, not going to research it, "show me a link" is code for "oh, bs!" & everything must be only that person's perspective, bc they have no faith in anything really at all. More than their own thinking, difference, new ideas, all scares them. They're not warriors lmao. Like that church guy in the video, "don't do that, ooo that's demonic," bc it's different than HIS way. 🙄😂 HE had no faith & thought it was everyone else. & Many just shut their ears & eyes & wall themselves up vs trying or learning anything past grade school. Sane fear, different rationalization.

    Seems like a lot of this thought and philosophy has been preserved in Pennsylvania Dutch culture in their powwow practices. Tickets and charms are used the same way the sources describe the use of runes. Very Christian, and written in modern alphabet, but the same concept. It's still part of living culture there. PA Dutch preserved a lot of folk practices from early 18th century Germany. Called the Holy Roman Empire back then.

    I agree that runes were used for magic but to say "all it takes is 30 seconds of research" seems a bit of an exaggeration. Dr Jackson Crawford for example believes there is only evidence that runes were an alphabet and nothing before and I think its safe to say he's done a lot of research.

  • @WildWoodsGirl65

    @WildWoodsGirl65

    8 күн бұрын

    30 seconds of research brings up multiple search results & even just the article snippets show that runes were used for writing and magic. He's not saying that equals gaining full info. He's only saying even that short a search will show both exist. He's calling people who claim either narrow minded stance too lazy to even ~begin~ to look. When researching we can't enter an individual's name. That's as narrow minded. We'll get only their opinion or knowledge. I know people love Dr. Crawford but he is a scholar with only one viewpoint on this, more literary, & searching for a specific source will not give unbiased results or the full range of knowledge at all. We have to research with unbiased keywords on topic, for unbiased results from a variety of sources. We can't "ask leading questions." It took way longer to type this than "runes various Norse uses" or "how Norse people used younger futhark." & If someone has been reading a particular source, to scroll further than those top results bc of Google algorithms to the variety of sources below what they pushed to the top.
