How Royalty Eats in the Philippines

Dulang is an extraordinary feast that is prepared during special occasions of the Tausugs, Yakan and Sama People, in Mindanao, Philippines. The spread itself is a sight to behold. Dishes and pastries are intricately made before being displayed in an ornate platter.
On this episode of the 81 Provinces, Erwan Heussaff sits down with a Yakan community as they show him how they prepare a Dulang from scratch.

    I want more documentary and travel vlogs relating to Indigenous people of the country!!! Maybe the inland tribes of mindanao next! Or the people on the borders of the Philippines (Miangas island of North sulawesi, Palau, Eastern Sabah, People of Orchid Island/Aboriginal Taiwan) and how similar or different their traditions are to us.

    i have no idea how erwan and featr managed to keep it entertaining, informative, properly-paced, yet very respectful, intricate, and quiet at the same time. i admire how him and the team stayed out of the way for the real stars to truly shine and how they handled the symbolisations and practices of this tribe. thank you for this. as a fellow filipino, i needed this.

    Or you know, help them PRESERVE those cultures by at least not killing them to steal their ancestral lands. The Moro people were able to keep their culture and tradition because they resisted and fought for it. Even when Mindanao was flooded by the Governments with settlers from Visayas, Ilocos and Iloilo, they resisted those changes. Some Lumad tribes were not so lucky though except those whose communities are situated mostly in the mountains, forests, or interiors of Mindanao.

    Moro cuisine should become mainstream. They're so unique, and yet so familiar.

  • @scorpioninpink

    @scorpioninpink

    11 ай бұрын

    I don't want it to be mainstream because that is what happened with Pastil and now they are bastardizing it by making a Pork version of it. It's the culture of my people that was supposed to signal that it is Halal even if we visited in Luzon or Visayas or Christian part of Mindanao. Now we cannot even do that anymore because our food, our culture has been culturally appropriated by non-Moro people.

  • @AngryKittens

    @AngryKittens

    11 ай бұрын

    @@scorpioninpink Ironic. Because the reason why "pork pastil" even exists is because knowledge of Moro cuisine is NOT mainstream. Pastil spread because of the Maguindanao/Maranao diaspora to other cities in the Philippines. It's cheap and is sold in public markets where it became familiar to other working class people who then learned how to make it, then adapted it. Because it wasn't introduced properly, there are some who make it who don't even know it's originally from Moro cuisine. Hence why they think (wrongly) that it can be made with pork. If Moro cuisine was more prevalent and recognizable, more people would know what those dishes are and why they can not be made with pork. By keeping the dishes rare and exotic, you're not preventing its bastardization or theft. Instead you're accelerating it. I wouldn't be surprised if Moro dishes get introduced to Malaysians or Indonesians and they claim it as THEIR dish. It's already happening with the Sama oko-oko dish, which some Malaysians are now claiming to be a Malay dish (nasi tehe-tehe) because they acquired it from the migrant Sama people in Sabah (whom they ironically still treat as foreigners). In order to CLAIM the dish, you need to tell people about it. Explain what it is, and what it isn't.
