There is a basic common rhythmic vocabulary in flamenco, and we all need to know it, understand it and master it. In flamenco we often express them by singing simple rhythmic cells such as "TACATACA" or "TICOTA". In this video, we explore many rhythmic possibilities with the "TICOTA" cell on a simple 3-beats compás, based on the subdivisions, and what we call “rhythmic shift”. Shifts are very common, mainly in the baile, where the footwork constantly uses the changes in flow rate, in subdivisions.
This lesson inlcudes MANY EXERCISES to help you understand, visualize and FEEL THE RHYTM. If we understood from the start a few things about rhythm in general, we could *SAVE A LOT OF TIME* in our practice!
The 3 steps to master the rhythm and the compás:
- Understand it
- Practice it (a lot)
- Feel it!

I understand even less. What use is the rhythm of the metronome if we impose the rhythm of the palmas? The rhythm of the palmas becomes the reference rhythm, right?

Practicing with the metronome is, in my opinion, fundamental. It is "he" who will tell us if our pulsation is stable and regular. Sometimes we don't realize that our pulse, our internal groove is not regular, we can tend to slow down, speed up... We sometimes realize it in an unpleasant way, while playing, dancing with other musicians/dancers who have a steady rhythm. Practicing with a metronome for a musician is as important as working with a clock for a Train station manager: make sure you're on time. Doing the palmas on the metronome allows you to continuously check with SOUND and FEEL that you are well synchronized. The practice of rhythm goes through all of this: understanding, listening, feeling, practice... In this exercise yes, the palmas do the same thing as the metronome, the basic compás. Of course, this will not always be the case. The metronome, even if it seems tedious at the beginning, in the long run gives us precision, clarity, musicality and FREEDOM! Hope this helped you understand a little better!
