Polevault, just about the only sport where you can start celebrating before you hit the ground

Grant Harriman I actually came to this video from a “celebrated too early” compilation, and pole vault was one of them, sorry to burst that bubble

I like how Otto is smiling when he failed the jump, like he is admitting Lavillenie completely deserve that gold medal.

"Taking a risk" He was already bronze, in the narrators own words "A great achievement among athletes" Its the exact opposite of taking a risk He literally had nothing to lose.

If he didn't raise the bar, but would clear it, he'd still be in the games, but on bronze with 3 more tries for the next height. Now he had only two that had to work.

mr.kitloin When I was running the 1500 metre, I was so behind the 2nd runner around 50 metres. I was already in bronze, but I don’t want bronze lol. I wanted silver. I really really risked going over the line and pushed myself to my limits at the last 109 metres and got silver. I did have nothing to lose, bronze isn’t an option if you are able to push.

I saw that live. Was super hyped for gold and silver for my german boys and then Lavillenie just had a moment of pure genius. I couldn't believe it.

Same for me i saw that live but i'm french. It was so intense. My friends and me were all crazy when Lavillenie did this jump. But be proud. Germans did a really good competition and that's what makes it a beautiful story.
The way he was treated by the Brazilian crowd in Rio was absolutely disgusting, I felt really sorry for him.. Still one of the best pole vaulters out there!!

Cry me a river, he lost, and he also lost his Olympic record, then decided to try and blame the crowd for his own shortcommings. Maybe he should not have acted all smug like he had already won the thing before Braz had made his attempt and should've focused on the competition instead.

Very interesting video! I'm so happy that you have made a video about my event! Just one correction: The poles aren't made of metal, they made of carbon or fiberglass.

Fun Fact: In the 2016 games, he set a new olympic record by jumping 5.98m before it was surpassed a few minutes later by Brazil's Thiago Braz da Silva at 6.03m (his new PB). Brazil took 1st in the event and France took 2nd. Honestly, for me, it was one of the highlights of the entire Games. It was incredible to watch the King and the Newcomer go head to head. They were very kind to each other as well. Amazing sportsmanship especially by Sam Kendricks (America) who came in 3rd and wholeheartedly cheered them on during every jump. Watch the clip on yt if you have the time, it's amazing 😊

This is a breathtaking story of Lavillenie as a pole-vaulter. It's his dream to be the greatest pole-vaulter. He deserves to take home the gold award.
Great video, That soundtrack though... Wow
Love it at the end when 2 runners running behind him

Incredible story
The french are good at pole vaulting because it helps to be able to cross wide streams and get over high walls when retreating. It's the same story with Parkour
Love the narrator
lavillenie cracked in rio 2016 final when he faced brazil's da silva. he was setting the tone all throughout the game til the last minute when he had to chase da silva to take the gold. in his last attempt, je clearly cracked under pressure.
That's inspiring me
It was magical.
Just Hats off to u mite!!!.
Always hate how he was treated in Brazil. I will never ever ever support Brazil in the Olympics after how they treated this fella.

Meanwhile there was a relay race going on in the background
I didn't know Zac Efton was into pole vaulting
I wonder who the very first person was that figured out that you could propel yourself into the air & over things with a pole-and what gave them the idea in the first place to try. I always thought it looked fun, though I could never do it lol
Great OR!
How in the world that he got to put himself that high carrying that heavy balls at the same time?

Pole Vault poles do not have long metal poles in them. They are strictly either Fiber Glass or Carbon Fiber. (Or a hybrid of both) Metal has not been used as poles in the pole vault for decades.
There will NEVER be another SERGEY BUBKA

WHO is this narrator and WHERE is his audiobook contract
and they were all vaulters for ages like their ancestors but along came generation smartphone and the vaulting was gone.
6m high? Doesnt it feel strange to you that long jump record is 8.9 m
@ShreshtJain
3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Ik its been a year but heres a physicists explaination of why that maybe the case. In Long Jump and pole vault atheletes have a 40m run up, but in long jump they jump in direction of the run, meaning they use most of their momentum without any changes to its direction. But in pole vault they use their run up's momentum to a) gain a good height and b) to do work on the pole that bends and then straightens vertically during which process some work is lost as this isnt fully efficient. This may be why long jump is farther.
How was that a risk? It's not like he had any other choice to win, and he had nothing to lose.
@theburninator888

He raised the bar after already hitting it at a lower height so that the other two couldn't match him. He failed, then made it harder and succeeded.
