How Reliance Jio Became India's Biggest Telecom (and Raised $21 Billion)

In 2010, one of India's most dominant companies returned to the telecommunications space. In ten years, they flipped the table on all of India's telecom incumbents and came out on top.
Reliance Jio (renamed to Jio Platforms later on, but I will stick to Reliance Jio) leveraged a $30 billion network to remake the Indian telecom industry and bring cheap data to the whole country.
Jio's entry has literally remade the Indian digital economy. In this video, I want to look back at how Reliance Jio entered one of India's most competitive industries, won leading share in that market against established incumbents, and won of the love of America's tech titans.
Edit: I misspoke at 3:57, it's BSNL not BNSL. My bad.

personally, as an Indian, the transformation was so dramatic that these names like Aircel, Docomo, Telenor, etc. sound nostalgic, and it's been only 5 years. To give an example, in 2016 we had a 2Mbps 10Gb broadband connection with frequent drops, now we have a 250mbps 2TB (practically unlimited) fiber-optic connection with zero complaints in the last 1.5 years for roughly the same price of slightly above ₹999 ($10). Though we have an Airtel Xstream connection. There is a lot to be said about the Jio effect.

When Jio first launched its service in 2016, Thailand was also experiencing mobile growth due to the relaunch of the 3rd (last) mobile network True with the same playbook, offering cheaper data plan to grab the market share from the first mobile operator AIS and 2nd Telenor (dTac). True is a subsidiary of CP, the largest agro-industrial and media group in Thailand. True could launch cheaper data plan due to cash injection from China Mobile which takes about 20% investment stake in the company. As of today, True has become No.2 operator overtaking Telenor and is running neck and neck against AIS, majority owned by Singapore Telecom.

As a Canadian here, I had never heard of Jio. Fascinating story. Great channel. I doubt there will be a Tesla cars factory in India in the near future, though I used to be more optimistic about it. However, India could be a great place for a Tesla phone factory ... as well as for solar panels, of course. India's worst resource prospects is with water. India needs desalinization plants urgently, which consume a lot of power, which could come from solar cells. Tesla Surya :D Building gigantic solar farms and battery storage has the added advantage of removing the need for hydro power, which gives more options in river water management, as well. The Tesla phone will be a huge move; but I think Elon is keeping the project under wraps until Apple announces a date of delivery for the Apple EV. When that happens, Elon will announce a release date for the Tesla phone, is my theory. You guys in India should get ready to offer Tesla a place for producing that phone. A car factory is unlikely, I think, because optimization of worldwide shipping costs implies building factories in countries where consumption is likely to be highest, so as to keep the export portion minimized; but local consumption of Tesla cars in India is not likely to be very high; and FSD AI trained for US driving conditions would be useless there.

@@BlackHawkTejas Nobody seems to need Tesla until it's too late. Established car brands everywhere in the world are going to be going bankrupt by the dozens starting next year with Ford, GM and Toyota. Even with $12000 government incentives they will go bankrupt, as there are no batteries and no battery materials to serve them; and their self-drive efforts are laughable, and their motor technology, power electronics, and production technologies are far behind too. It will be the same in India unless the government protects them, which then becomes a perpetual situation. Same thing will happen with telcos once SpaceX begins to offer cell service using Starlink as the backbone. Apple will kick the bucket the moment Tesla releases its phone, working over Starlink based cell service. Telcos will either adopt Starlink and become low markup resellers, or go bankrupt. Even the Internet Of Things will likely be dominated by SpaceX. There will be a handful of auto-makers by the end of the decade; Tesla, BYD and maybe some other Chinese brand.

Well researched as usual. Thanks. - Also worth mentioning that VoLTE offers significantly better voice quality than standard 2G-3G circuit switched voice because IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) has much better codecs than what is possible with ISDN-like 2G-3G technology. - Nearly 2 years later. JIO Telecom is the only tier one operator I know of that upgraded directly to hyper modern 5G standalone core network (and skipped 5G EPC aka non standalone). - As for devices, JIO is till 100% committed to bring "new oil" data to the most destitute with a 999 INR only 4G phone (~12usd). The device is called the Jio Bharat and is being made by two device manufacturers - one by Jio itself and promoted via sister company Reliance Retail, and the other by domestic mobile phone manufacturer Karbonn.
