How 'realistic' is the Catachan Jungle Fighter equipment? | Astra Militarum lore | Warhammer 40,000

Ойындар

Natives to a jungle deathworld, I check out their equipment and explore the conditions of fighting in the jungle. As a former solider, I draw on my experience and whilst this is a fictional universe however it is still interesting to understand if it would actually work on the battlefield.

About naked arms, is a common problem for a lot of figures, it's a sure way to being scratched, and in hostile environment it is possible that the wound became infected.(Same problem with WGA's OhRra, otherwise very good figures)

I imagine bergans and bags were stashed in a harbour before combat operations begin.

Agreed - we can assume that any of the minis modeled are heading into an attack so are only in patrol order equivalent

For the bandana, I always thought of it as a way to identify each other, like hunters wearing orange to not accidentally get shot by another hunter while they are camouflaged. Not sure if anyone else has had this thought.

That's a great point! As you know, in the Ukraine war you see plenty of troops wearing blue tape on their helmets to help differentiate friend from foe

Loving this series. As for the vest with no sleeves, the Catachan Fang is often coated in a powerful vemon from a Catachan Devil, so if they were to accidentally nick themselves with it, dead in seconds. In the novel "Catachan Devil" an ork is incapacitated seconds after getting slashed across the stomach.

haha nice one, I didn't know about the envenomed blade outside of Sly Marbo. I've just bought the Catachan Devil audio book so looking forward to it!

see one thing you're possibly not even considering is, we use camo against human eyes, a singular range of the visible light spectrum and even the latest computer identifiers are getting pretty good at identifying camoed up peeps, discolourations of fabrics vs the surrounds, identifying movement etc in 40K they're fighting things that litterally know where they are physically, or via thermal, tremour sensing, that the plants themselves are possibly all one huge plant so they know at any time where they might be, against the environment armour isn't gonna help, camo isn't doing anything either, so a lightly armoured highly mobile force is probably better. so a bright red bandana to let your squad identify you against an otherwise sea of green and brown is probably useful.

Fair point, I took a modern world view to it which isn't necessarily correct. I would say in the 41st, the vast majority of enemies are actually other humans (heretics) so principally the concepts today remain. However as u say against anything more advanced they will either have improved optics or inherently superior vision. Supporting your comment on the red bandana, I remember we put small glow in the dark tabs on the back of our patrol hats and equipment to help maintain visual link with the bloke in front of you when moving at night.

I love the fact you made this video 😀The catachans have to be the most unrealistic models but they are iconic. I personally like the models and have several hundred. I think it must be my age and the love of Marbo er Rambo

Several hundred, that is glorious! I only owe a couple of the original sculpts and I love them as well. I have both Sergeant Ripper Jackson and The Colonel however the original plastic ones are awesome. (in a retro kind of way!)

As the GW model is so old would you consider using the Wargames Atlantic Space Nam ones?

I would imagine the Catachan Fang is more like a khukuri but they lacked the modeling at the time. As far as the red bandanas go I like to think its hibiscus print pattern to be camo in the jungle.

So I know the fang is definitely a straight blade as per old codexes which have them illustrated. Great point on the hibiscus print, would be obviously more effective from a camo/concealment POV

I think this video should have waited until they get a Kill Team revamp, or looked only at the command squad/limited release character ones, since the real squad is sooooooo old
