Thank you for this video. I have an even older version of that charger that I have had on the battery for an hour. I kept watching it and the gauge wasn't moving at all. Mine has no light of any kind. So I tried touching the two clips together like you demonstrated to see if the charger even worked anymore. I finally got them to spark after rubbing some of the rust of the ends of them. Then I did same on the battery...rubbed rust off....and now the gauge is showing that the battery is charging! I just need the car to start one more time so I can drive it to the dealer for a new battery in the AM. Thanks again!

If the charger is not plugged in you can connect in any order; You can connect them both to the same terminal or stick one up each of your nostrils if you like. Nothing will happen. When the charger is plugged in the rules change and you MUST NOT do any of the above.

This video may get someone following your instructions seriously injured !!!! I'm sure you received a manual with this charger. You always connect the Positive clamp to the Positive post on the battery FIRST. You then connect the Negative clamp to a ground such as a bolt on the shock tower is mostly standard. Then connect the power and charge. It is also better if you trickle charge it at 2 amps overnight, the battery will receive a steady slow current rather than a jolt of current which may or may not last as long. Connecting Pos to Pos and Neg to Neg can result in an explosion of acid in your face !

If you unplug the charger WHICH HE DID! ...and then connect the UNENERGIZED wires to the battery ... Then it doesn't matter what color is connected first because it CANNOT SHORT OUT WITH NO POWER ON. ... NO COMMON SENSE.

Best to charge the battery with the charger set to the lowest amp setting. Charging a bettery at 2 amps is better for it than charging it at 10, 20 or more amps. It will take longer but your battery will recover better.

There are some interesting comments to this video. Some good and some not so good. If you happen to be someone who is not sure which are which I offer the following opinion: The maker of this video included the warning label on the back of the charger and my comments are based on that label, specifically warning #2 under RISK OF EXPLOSIVE GAS MIXTURE. First, it is obvious that the charger manufacturer condensed the warning to save space and chose wording which is not specific to a negative ground electrical system, which most cars have. But some (to my knowledge only quite old or antique) cars have positive ground systems. To verify that you have a negative ground system in your car follow the cable that is connected to the negative post on your battery and see that it is connected to the chassis of the car. What follows is my interpretation of Warning #2 on the label shown on the back of the charger in this video as is applicable to a negative ground automotive electrical system (My edits and comments are in parenthesis, otherwise I have attempted to copy the warning word for word): 2. BATTERY LEAD CONNECTIONS - For a battery installed in a vehicle (this indicates that it is okay to use this charger to charge a battery that is installed in a vehicle), first connect the charger output lead (the output lead is the one with power coming from the charger, in this case the positive (typically red)) to the ungrounded (positive, typically red) battery post - (which is) not connected to (the) automobile chassis - in accordance with polarity identification(.) (This is saying FIRST connect red to red.) (A)nd then (connect the) opposite (negative, typically black) polarity lead (of the charger) to the (car) chassis away from (the) battery (so here, you do not connect the black lead of the charger directly to the negative battery post but connect it to the chassis at some remote location so if a spark is generated while making the connection it is not as close to the acid fumes which the battery emits): do not connect to carburetor or fuel lines (because you also do not want to chance making a spark at the fuel system). (When finished charging the battery) Disconnect the chassis lead (black, negative lead of the charger) first.

Yeah, you can’t really read specific gravity with a hydrometer immediately after charging. The electrolyte won’t be thoroughly mixed. Let the automatic charger do its thing, then come back to the battery a day or two later or drive the car around to get the electrolyte mixed back up. If it was still taking a healthy charge after 2 hours, chances are you’ve got an ok battery. When a dead battery seems to hit full charge in just a few minutes, you’ve got a bad battery.

Right on the connection points, but not quite the right reason. You place the positive clamp on the positive terminal, and then negative on the chassis ground because when the last connection is made, electricity will flow immedietly. This produces a spark. dead batteries and charging batteries produce a lot of hydrogen gas which is flammable. The spark can ignite that gas if it's close to the battery itself. So, by connecting the negative clamp last and placing it on the chassis away from the battery, you avoid having that spark near the hydrogen gas and risking a battery explosion. The rapidly burning hydrogen inside the battery is what blows the acid/water mixture out of the battery cells.

I needed that charger today and so I came to find a video to make sure I didn't do it wrong and ruin my battery or start a fire. I am a 57 year old woman who knows how to change a tire, I know what rocker arms and pistons are... I have been around people rebuilding engines... but I have never needed to charge my battery with a charger until now. I didnt even know these things existed until a few months ago. I just kept a new battery in my car. And was good about turning lights off etc. This time I guess I left them on...it happens. Anyway I missed going to Thanksgiving with my family... but tomorrow I will have a battery fully charged. Happy Thanksgiving Drago.
