How Pulstar Spark Plugs Work

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Pulstar Spark Plugs use innovative plasma-assisted combustion technology to increase horsepower, torque and improve fuel efficiency.
Plasma-assisted combustion is already used to improve engine performance for racing, but requires complex control systems and costs nearly $2,000 per cylinder. Pulstar Spark Plugs, manufactured by Enerpulse Technologies (Ticker: ENPT), brings plasma-assisted combustion to consumers with a simple spark plug upgrade for less than $18 a cylinder. Pulstar uses a patented internal capacitor, developed with the help of a US Department of Energy laboratory, to create a high-intensity electrical pulse that ionizes the air-fuel mixture and saturates it with combustion-enhancing plasma. With its plasma-assisted combustion, Pulstar ignites fuel instantly and burns it rapidly; gaining up to 7 horsepower, 9 ft.-lbs. of torque ... and, delivering wicked throttle response.
Pulstar Spark Plugs are available for purchase from most major automotive retailers such as AutoZone, JEGs, PepBoys etc…and online today at Amazon.com.

    I have used these in a Ford Ranger 4.0 V6. They were Fantastic in till a month later . Miss Fire on cylinder 2 & 5. The Insulator broke on the plugs. These plugs just couldn't stay together. Had to figure a way to remove the peaces from inside the motor. After a weekend of frustrations. I got some NGK plugs in used all my life never had 1 BREAK!. Everything went back to normal no more misfires. I have sent pics to Pustular asking questions on why or how this could of happen ? I made sure there put in correct and Gap was dead on .054 was the gap. I really want every 1 to be safe and keep there car long as possible. I was lucky these did not hurt my motor.

    I have a 2005 Ford GT in which I have added a pully and tune to the car giving me an additional 175 hp above stock. Since adding Pulstar Pulse Plugs I'm experiencing a noticable improvement in accelerator response and I'm back to the same mileage as the car had before the pully and tune. Thank you Pulstar!

    Well as a professional mechanic who had to study automotive technology to become certified, I feel there may be a need to put my own two cents in. Hold on to your Hats lol . First of all to overcome the spark plug gap, the ignition system in total has to be able to produce enough pressure (voltage), to ionize the air gas mixture between the spark plug gap (the definition of plasma is ionized gases consisting of positive ions and free electrons in proportions resulting in more or less no overall electric charge). A corona effect happens the instant of ionization, then propagation, which is similar to lighting bolts shooting off in all directions from the corona, it is then, that the propagation starts the flame front which will continue to spread across the combustion chamber. (BTW the blue / reddish arc you see crossing the electrodes is the after effect of electrons following after the ionization ( ionization/corona is the true spark! ) Upon ignition the gasses expand rapidly creating pressure that will push the cylinder from top dead centre to bottom dead centre (pretty sure we all know that part). But here is the rub, the time it takes to go from the corona, to propagation, to flame front takes approximately 0.003 seconds, that may not seem like much but when your engine is spinning at 2500 RPM or MORE it is important because that delay means the cylinder through inertia may be halfway down the cylinder before it feels the push from the flame front if it wasn't advanced properly. And that is that's wasted energy. That's why all reciprocating engine ignition systems have timing advance. Bike, car, boat, airplane or lawnmower. Your engine advances the timing to make up for the delay in ignition to flame front at various RPM so that the flame front starts push the cylinder close to TDC (top dead centre) where peak pressures are utilized ! By using a capacitor in the plug it definitely will take time to charge ...delaying the ignition ...in turn this will change the factory specifications for your engines timing advance essentially RETARDING its timing ! Pulstar states that this is compensated by a faster flame front... and although I believe the Pulstar plug may produce a bigger corona effect as well as propagation and hence a larger flame front, ultimately the speed of travel after propagation is dependant on the volatility of the air fuel mixture, I think that a ignition delay would still be there. Factory engineers calculate advance timing and the sparkplugs to coincide with mixtures for optimal rich acceleration or lean cruise, as well as with a recommended fuel octane (the higher the octane the more resistance to detonation) for the engines they design. Essentially would I buy a capacitor sparkplug ? ..well I would for an engine that I built and planned to run on a Dynamometer so I could adjust the timing advance curve for optimal performance. and test it for benefits That I could see myself doing. As for just putting them in a factory spec car just as is and expecting better results ? it might and it might not... my guess is a around town as a daily driver it might ...a high revving 15,000 RPM race engine it may not ....my advice to Pulstar is more empirical proof.

    Pulsar plugs aside, would you agree that most engines would benefit from a wider than OEM recommended gap? Of course you can't go too wide or there's misfire, but if one takes the time to widen the gap just enough before it misfires, there's more power and better mpg available?

    The flame front that a spark plug starts can't be sped up by the spark plug, the air/fuel mixture burns at a set rate depending on the ratio. The only way it could burn faster is if it all combusted simultaneously like in a diesel(compression ignition), without a flame front. Although gasoline is too volitile and difficult to get to work like diesel consistently because it needs perfect temperature, pressure and air/fuel ratio conditions to run well.

    I think an amplified spark from an aftermarket ignition is denser and more useful than plasma. I've mentioned before that with a high energy ignition coil for example, the smell of the exhaust changes and doesn't smell as dirty due to the more complete exhaust burn. In comparison with pulstar there is no preceivable difference in the exhaust smell and engine performance (I have them installed).

    I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but to form plasma you need to super heat a gas so the electrons fall off the atoms, once this occurs you have the change of state from gas to plasma but, in order to do this this plug must be creating a hotter burn and head space temperature is crucial to horse power, fuel efficiency and engine life. normally in my racing experience a cooler head space is what you chase, cooler air /headspace equals more density bigger bangs and more gains in power, engine life and fuel eff etc

  • @PulstarPulsePlugs

    @PulstarPulsePlugs

    8 жыл бұрын

    You are correct on both counts but are confusing two concepts. A cool "head space temperature" or combustion chamber is very beneficial. The cooler, and therefore denser the air fuel charge at the time of ignition the more energy can be extracted. We tend to think about the combustion event as a big bang but it's actually a controlled burn (a chemical reaction) The high energy discharge from the capacitor does break apart the molecules (forming plasma) which excites the fuel mixture, jump starting the chemical reaction. This can result in a more complete burn that can result in lower residual combustion chamber temperatures. Plasma is often associated with higher temperatures but in this case the plasma field is localized and short lived, only heating the fuel charge between the electrodes. This is known as non-equilibrium plasma.

    I would have thought, It would cause there to be lag in how much time it takes for the Spark to for. Would you have to change the timing for the Spark plug to make sure that the Capacitor side of thing's doesn't cause the spark to be formed after the Piston is at the correct point?

  • @PulstarPulsePlugs

    @PulstarPulsePlugs

    8 жыл бұрын

    You're absolutely correct. The time it takes to charge the capacitor does extend the time to breakdown voltage by just under one microsecond. We chose not to discuss that aspect of the technology for two reasons. 1. The time it takes to achieve breakdown voltage varies slightly by all spark plugs. The reason they moved to fine wire iridium plugs was to make the time to breakdown voltage more consistent as it tends to vary from cycle to cycle more drastically when there is a larger surface area to ionize. 2. The video was long enough to begin with and we felt tightening the ignition window from 500 microseconds to 10 made up for the just under one microsecond we extend ionization of the spark gap. The capacitor charges almost instantly. In fact, we have a grant from the California Energy Commission to build an ignition system that stops delivering voltage after ionization and charges the capacitor again to achieve a multi strike pulse system to create even more plasma.

    What effect does that extra heat from the plasma have on the piston, cylinder walls, valves and combustion chamber? Do you need to have special ceramic coatings on the piston, valves and combustion chamber to cope with that extra heat?

  • @PulstarPulsePlugs

    @PulstarPulsePlugs

    8 жыл бұрын

    The pulse is extremely quick - nanoseconds in length. The extra heat created dissipates extremely quickly, before it can effect the temperature of anything not within its immediate reach. This is known as non-equilibrium plasma. Think about swiping your finger through a flame really quickly. Thats a similar concept at much slower time frames and on a much larger scale.

    The video shows the expanding combustion flame front moving quicker for the Pulse Plug in comparison to a conventional spark plug. However I don't see how a hotter spark could cause this. Once the air fuel mixture in direct contact with the spark is ignited it starts off a self ignition process and the spark no longer plays any further role in the continuing combustion process. The speed of the subsequently expanding flame front is dependant entirely on thermodynamic factors and for identical cylinders under identical conditions this rate of flame front increase should be the same regardless of the type of spark plug used. I would concede that a hotter spark may initially ignite a greater volume of fuel air mixture giving the initial combustion process a "head start" over a weaker spark, but surely the subsequent rate of increase of flame front is the same?Can anyone explain this to me please?

    If your engine is experiencing knocking and you’re having trouble with electrode temperature then the Pulstar technology isn’t going to fix that. You need to select a plug with the proper heat range and/or fix whatever is causing the knocking issue. If, however you are tuning a performance engine then the more consistent ignition allows for more aggressive timing without problems with knocking.

    How does a piezoelectric spark plug work? where does it tap into the mechanical energy, and are there other types of spark plugs? is their power source from the battery or some other form? what type of spark plug is the Pulstar?

  • @PulstarPulsePlugs

    @PulstarPulsePlugs

    8 жыл бұрын

    There are two different kinds of piezoelectric spark plugs. The most common is the type found in a gas grill which use a spring loaded plunger to create the mechanical energy. There have been several attempts at using devices like camshafts to actuate the plunger to use that technology in an internal combustion engine but they have yet to be commercially viable. The other doesn't use the piezoelectric effect to create the spark but instead combines a conventional spark plug with piezoelectric sensor to sense combustion chamber pressures in real time. These plugs are commonly used in engine development. We refer to Pulstar as a pulse plug internally because we don't actually meet the Society of Automotive Engineer's (SAE) definition of a spark plug, we have too much capacitance (the ability to store energy). We call it a spark plug in our marketing material to avoid confusing the general public. We are the only spark plug in the market that exceeds the capacitance requirements of the SAE, therefore we are the only pulse plug available.

    I'm intrigued about how these plugs work compared to normal plugs and other plugs like NGK, Bosch, and E3. I'm curious to see how these plugs work in Mazda's high compression SkyActiv-G engines. Since the high compression ratio of 14:1 already increases fuel efficiency by a great bit, I'm thinking these Pulse Plugs could squeeze a little bit more fuel economy out of the engine and still withstand the high compression. But what I am really curious to find out is if these plugs would also work in Mazda's Wankel rotary engines. If they work in piston engines, they should be able to work just as well in rotaries like the RX-7, RX-8, or even older rotaries. If they can run in Wankel engines, it would be awesome to know that they will help clean up their high emissions and they won't drink as much gas as they would with normal plugs

    Hi, we don't currently make a plug that fits a Mazda Wankel engine. However, if we did have a plug that fit it would improve fuel efficiency just like in a conventional engine. We have seen fantastic results with other rotary engines such as Liquid Piston: liquidpiston.com. We have seen good results in high cylinder pressure engines both with high-static compression ratios and boosted applications.

    We would do extensive in-house testing first. In the automotive aftermarket, manufacturers don't need OEM approval to sell their products for that application but they are liable for any damage their product causes. That's why it costs so much to produce a new model, we have to do a lot of testing before we make it commercially available. We don't want to be on the hook for unforeseen damages so we make sure to cover our bases during the testing phase.

    In newer vehicles we've seen a decrease in the performance improvements because manufacturers have begun using drive by wire quite a bit. The drive by wire tends to kick in and limit HP max output but we do see good improvements at lower RPMs. You can usually bypass that by getting an aftermarket tune. As far as how much, we couldn't say. Each year, make, and model is different and we haven't tested a '15 Fiesta. Also, I don't believe it would alter the sound of your vehicle unless you were idling rough.

  • @PulstarPulsePlugs

    @PulstarPulsePlugs

    8 жыл бұрын

    If by "higher watt fire rate" you mean peak power output, then yes. We output a 5 MW pulse upon spark formation in addition to a 50 W spark, whereas a normal spark plug only produces a 50 W spark, no pulse. Also, our "fire rate" is slightly delayed by our need to charge the capacitor before forming the spark, but the slight delay is more than compensated for by the formation of plasma to sensitize the fuel. See our response to Robert Markham below for more information.

    At 2:08 in your video you show an overlay that states there are 5000 spark events over the period. As a mechanic since 1976 and having spent many years using oscilloscopes to diagnose ignition conditions and I know what the video claims to not be the case. There is only one single spark event at the "spark line" you show, the duration of which is the length of the entire spark line dictated by time the current from the coil secondary takes to deplete over the resistance of the spark lead and spark gap, I have a number of vids on the topic. In addition to that the spikes you call individual spark events are in fact simply the variances in resistance during the one spark event due to changes in temperature and high pressure gas perpendicular to the spark during combustion (that causes the spark to bend increasing the distance it travels) and I also have a vid of super imposed oscilloscope patterns of a spark plug during a combustion event and a following non combustion (dead spark) in a 4 stroke engine that clearly shows the variances you call multiple spark events are only a reflection of the combustion as I explained above. Why are you misrepresenting the spark line as multiple spark events when it is clearly not ?

    I've had them in my '05 Harley with a stage 2 modded twincam 88 engine, running torque cams for 2 years now. I'm a pretty aggressive rider, and the only difference I noticed may have been a very slight change in freespin revs, but this was already a well-tuned motor. Aside of the cams, the most noticeable difference was a Boyesen X-wing in front of the carb, directing airflow and making immediate throttle response a bit snappier, not the plugs. But at least they last.

    does anyone have any proof of this? i mean i would love to just slap some in my bike or my soon to be built experimental engine, but only first if i know they will at least preform as good as the normal ngk my bike uses, but if they preform better (from what i'm hearing you could just add a small advance to timing to get the same result, unless the plasma part is real) then i would like to use these to their full potential, as in have a lean burn engine set up to ignite all the fuel as fast as it can and make power out of all of the burn time to have little waste heat go into the cooling system and no usable heat go into the exhaust, i will be bouncing around a few ideas on this engine and may try some ideas out on a test engine to confirm things, but from my understanding here, you can test their claims by changing gap, afr, and timing, and then measuring the exhaust temps till you get the coldest exhaust for the leanest afr, then try again with regular plugs to confirm that these are better (you may have to change your settings again because of how the plugs act differently, but you should be able to get more work for the same fuel usage with these if they do what they say, either way they can be a valuable tool in fine tuning your ignition timing at least)

Its just like Cold Air Intake mods, they do very little to nothing at all or even make the car run worse off than before. Edit: there are test videos that show its performance, but is minimal at best. Were talking maybe a potential of gaining 0.5hp on the dyno lol.

    That isn't what happens at all. After the voltage collapses to bridge the spark gap, is when the ignition coil starts delivering power to the spark plug. Because of that, it is impossible for the "capacitor" to be charging before then. There is just as much inconsistency with a Pulsestar plug as with most others, and infact, it is better to use an iridium plug because the spark initiates sooner, and with less energy requirement from the ignition coil. Talk to Mark at WeaponX for the real deal.

    These sort of devices, like fuel ionizers, turbo intake mixers and the like are all gimmick devices. They depend upon the consumer's ignorance of the combustion process. It's a matter of physics. The fuel is hydrocarbon, which is hydrogen and carbon. When it burns it forms CO2 and water vapor. CO2 is one carbon and two oxygen, and water is H2O, two hydrogen and one oxygen. The fuel itself only has so much energy, and as long as it is burned completely all the energy has been removed from the fuel. The spark is advanced so that as the fuel is ignited it creates a pressure wave in the cylinder at the right moment. This is before top dead center. The fuel takes a few microseconds to completely explode, whether the engine is idling or running fast, the rate of ignition is about the same. So, to adjust for this the spark is advanced as the RPMs increase. This way the ignition occurs a little sooner so the pressure wave of the exploding fuel will maximize it's force at the correct position of the crankshaft. Engines themselves have changed through the years to become more efficient. For instance modern car engines use what is called the Atkinson cycle rather than the Otto cycle. This allows for more expansion of the combustion gases. The head design on more modern engines often has a hemispherical shape with the intake valve and exhaust valves on opposite sides and the spark plug between them. This creates smooth flow through the cylinder and a uniform pressure wave of combustion. Of course the efficiency gains are a result of engineering design of the engines compared to engines of forty years ago, not from some gimmick device. Anyway, as long as all the fuel is burned completely and at the correct time the engine is operating at top efficiency. Modern engines have very complex combustion controls with feedback systems like oxygen sensors. Changing any component of such a system is most likely to harm performance, not improve it.
