Real-world protests are making their way into video games. The ban of Animal Crossing in China is a testament to the power of these in-game protests. Making me wonder: Is in-game activism the future of activism? It’s definitely a growing trend. And I’m curious what and who is driving this trend. It seems mostly young people. But why? And will game devs keep letting this happen, or will they hit the brakes to avoid bans? We'll explore all of this and more in this video.

I'm curious about how effective they are. I mean, real life protests are disruptive right? How disruptive can a protest in a game be when developers can just pull the plug
I could give another reason for why gamers aren't big fans of inserting political activism in game. The argument against it is structurally the same as the argument in favour of privacy. Like you described in the video a lot of others looking to implement their activism in game will do so under the belief that " personal is political". The thought that every thought and action reflect social realities that are of political nature and that any piece of media or literature meant to inform should henceforth reflect real life politics that too of only a certain kind. It also implies every moment should be spent in some form or another of political activism and not doing so is nothing less of an attack on the movement I disagree with the sentiment on the basis that each and every is a result of innumerable intersections from every immutable characteristic and choice they make such that each person's actions and beliefs can't be boiled down to a single group reasoning. We could hold the same beliefs for completely different reasons. I say the argument against political activism in games is an argument in favour of privacy because each individual is entitled to time and thought space dedicated completely to themselves given that their collective group can't possibly reflect each aspect of them. I don't owe every aspect of myself to a cause. For example, I'd describe my politics as libertarianism but my group of friends are primarily left leaning. Just because my politics differ from their, there is no need for me to be awful to them. My beliefs can exist separately from my private life. All in all, people who game deserve a time to themselves away from real life conflicts without being shamed for not putting every second of their time in activism. Also people who say that all games have political stories don't know what they're saying. Games such as Bioshock aren't political in the sense that they are full of slogans against a certain movement but they offer a philosophical argument.

Nicely drawn parallels between in-game politics and the concept of privacy. I get where you're coming from about keeping politics out of games. It's like everyone's got their own reasons for what they believe so lumping everyone under one big political banner in games doesn't always make sense. You're spot on saying gaming should be a break from all the serious stuff. Sometimes, you just wanna escape into a game without all that real-world drama. And about games like Bioshock, they're not pushing slogans or anything. They make you think, sure, but they're not telling you what to think. That's the cool part. Love your thinking.

Hey thanks. I hope your channel grows, you were very well researched and your writing was tight.@@BelindaErcan Cheers!
I didn't realize this was a trend. Over the summer there was a protest going on about companies using pride as a marketing tool on FFXIV and I thought for sure this was a one off thing. Glad to know it's a trend, I can laugh at it in the comfort of my own home now!

It's all because of ESG
Now there's one thing to keep a note of, there's a difference between Politics for a Self Contained Narrative Story and Lore, and an Obvious On-the-Nose Message or Statement a Developer want's to force their own political point for people to see.

y tho, its a video game. If your that heated about a topic, do something irl to prove you actually care. Besides, most of the time these 'protesters' are kids, who know nothing about anything and instead just jump on the band wagon because its popular. Also (this is like the 3rd edit I made to this comment lol), I just don't think we should mix video games with politics. Because once you do that, you get a two-way divided fanbase making the entire community just filled with hate and negativity. Inserting politics will just make everything worse in my opinion.

"Neutral". Almost all of the issues mentioned were leftist issues. Except Hongkong and Eve. Are conservatives even allowed to have the same presence in those games, or is it one party totalitarian ride for you? Biased reporting.

@@raburner3717 Politics is not a dirty word. "Politics (from Ancient Greek πολιτικά (politiká) 'affairs of the cities') is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals." Human rights is entirely political, it became an integral part of politics. And a good thing we have made it so in the modern age. You wouldn't have liked to live when it wasn't.
This is another example to me of slackivism where you jump on a band wagon thats popular without doing research to form your own opinion.

Maybe the game devs can create a server / zone / room for activist stuff. It's good for both their server traffic and the irl road traffic

Activism and protests do not work when they are zoned off from the main spaces everybody uses. That only further silences the voices of people calling for change. A private protest changes nothing, brings no attention. What is the purpose of activism if not to spread a message? No offense to you, I know you're trying to be helpful but this is such an antithesis to social change.

Your channel only started 4 months ago, but your production quality is incredible. I remember when the Minecraft Uncensored Library was released, and even aside from its message, the construction itself was beautiful. Some future video ideas: the trend of gaming records being beat by kids (recently Tetris, Fortnite, and Chess!), or perhaps a timeline of EULA's effect on pay-to-win in gaming

I disagree, protests are logical in their effectiveness of raising awareness and bringing rise to change, to some extent. Also, humans are emotional creatures, there is no reason that politics should be *completely* separate from emotions. In fact, many policies *can* be measured overall in their effect on emotions, or the general happiness and comfort of the population, happiness is not always but on an average scale a metric which can be used to determine the effectiveness of policies, social and economical.

@@hardleecure In the past months the Overton window on Israel has changed specifically because of protests and people making their voice heard, most recently the US abstaining from a vote declaring a ceasefire that they previously not only voted no on but vetoed altogether, in addition the UK moved from “No” to “Yes” because people have made it abundantly clear it’s a politically unpopular opinion and demand for change is asked. In addition let’s look at the history of protests - How’s civil rights? How’s pride and the rights of LGBT+ individuals? How’s the fact POC are no longer required to give their seat up for white people? How’s the apartheid in South Africa? How’s the early ending of the Vietnam War, all the soldiers alive today in part because of it, the voting age at 18. How are they doing?
kids shouldnt indulde in politics also this will be interesting to watch as it develops
Keep real life activism & politics out of games! I play games to escape reality for a few hours and i want it that way! The only politics & activism i want is the type that has to do with the game's story.
