Wow, thank you! I appreciate your kind words!
There's Tarkovsky's book "Sculpting in time" and his "Lectures on directing" and "Lessons of directing", although idk if last two has English translation but it has to be included in "Sculpting of time" at least partially. So he approaches editing totally different, that you as a director start to outline editing prior to the screenplay even (when you just had an idea), and then you edit pieces based on the "feeling of the flow of the time in the shot (frame)", his main point that movie is about capturing the (flow of) time in itself, and movie in the whole is like mosaic of time (pieces), like "canned time", so you can't put together two shots with "different time (flow)" together while editing like a plumber can't put together two pipes of different diameter. I should add that by the (flow of) time he meant not the physical movement in the frame, not the speed of that movement in ontological sense, but rather something much more thorough as a dimension or so, literally capturing the time on the film. What triggers me and utterly upsets that almost every single modern movie has the same editing and the same editing feeling, and when I watch let's say Bergman's movies or Robert Bresson's ones, it's such a nice breath of fresh air...

Thank you, Menges, for this video. I would love to watch more videos like this from you. There are so many creators who just teach the effects, but I want to learn the psychology behind the cuts and editing. What is in the editor's mind with every cut or effect? I want that. ☺️

Its cool you're doing videos like these. I think today cameras KZreadrs do videos for the sake of doing content selling thier looks. Its all about their image. Personally have always cut my videos like this. I lernt by watching many films then series. It was a study for me. So when editing this type of cut is ingrained in my brain. Look forward to seeing more videos form you

Wonderful video, showing your profession so well!. I have to watch carefully and take notes, I barely started to long format videos and I need every tip for editing! Can you also mention if you do scripting for the talks and explanations, what is the best approach to record and cut talks? I do a long recording session and find myself making mistakes, talking too much and unintentionally have filler words and silent moments. It makes it very hard to edit..

Thanks for your comment! And nice channel and guitar playing! It definitely takes me several takes to get all of my words out correctly =) I have heard about some AI tools that might assist with cutting out pauses and bad takes, but I haven't tried any yet.

@@mengespost thank you so much for the insight! I'll make scripts from now on, and hopefully I can cut videos in a way that my explanations will be seamless! Also thank you for checking the channel, it's very kind of you and appreciated! I really don't mind cutting the takes myself, as long as I talk very cleanly and without any fillers I think :) I wish you the very best in your journey, I'll do my best to spread the word about the educational content that you make :)

Hi, such a great video. Can you make a video on how to do multi-camera audio dialogue ducking? For instance, I know we can do it manually if you have three speakers and you want just one of them to speak audio, but is there a faster way?
