One thing to add is that sometimes the best thing you can play in a busy groove is to play the space...just let it breath. The space becomes the surprise.

Staying on rhythm, allows bassist to push & work the rhythm while allowing the music to break. The bassist's greatest asset is to unfailingly & consistently Listen & monitor

Do you know Anderson Paak, someone call him and tell him that you guys need to start a Funk band, as soon as he realizes his true destiny. Dude is a phenomenal drummer. We need a super group, with him and Lizzo and a bassist and maybe Dua Lipa, dedicated to Funk. Otherwise, people are going to forget what it is, the music cause nobody is doing it. That will be tragic, for bassists I am serious, it's happening already now. There's millions of people playing Blues, Jazz but not Funk at all anymore. What is Anderson Paak doing ?. Someone needs to tell him he's too talented to not be leading some type of a super group. If you take him, Lizzo, Dua and add Thundercat, omg...Those 4 are my favorite young artists, they would make one hell of a group. Imagine those four, just on stage would be excellent. They need to reinstate the Funk, annoint themselves as the new royalty, we all miss Prince, someone has to take over where he left, in control over the entire genre. There's really nobody out there now, doing anything like Prince was, I am just saying that there's a entire genre up for the taking, you guys see that right ?. I must be the only one who sees it. People desperately like funky stuff, but they just don't know what it is, at the root level people forgot. What happened ?. It's not that hard if you understand what it is, once you do. Prince really was in control of the future of all that, before he passed and his band mates were not very vocal about the future of the genre. Prince got control from guess who, the King and nobody expected him to pass on so suddenly. He was in control over a lot musically, once he made Kim Kardashion get off the stage, dude was a living legend of stage performances. James Brown created a genre, Prince took over and was filthy rich and famous...nobody did anything after that, your move. Now is your young persons opportunity to take over the entire genre of Funk, which is historical and since nobody has for some extremely strange reason. Go listen to some James Brown, it's the ultimate party music you could possibly have, speaking from experience, Prince and Michael Jackson are both tied for 2nd place, these songs will be played for the rest of time at parties, we had lots of good, good times. Nobody would ever know unless you tried playing it. It's not that stuff you guys are listening to now, house music that's not smooth, it's brainless. It's all about the 1 on each bar, coming back to that and then there's a bridge...etc. James tells you about it. All the Michael Jackson songs pretty much follow this pattern, haha and Prince. Not until you learn them all, does anyone truly figure it out.
