I honestly think being a pilot is one of the most admirable and skilled jobs in existence. The very fact they not only FLY a bloody plane, but they are trained to be so professional and keep calm no matter the situation, I certainly wouldn't want to do that job, then again I've never even been on a plane so I've no idea what it's like to fly or go through turbulence.

That’s one cool flight crew! A running joke in the CH-47 (Army aviation) community was to mess with passengers by periodically descending and telling the (air) crew chief to go pump a handle in back while the pilot levelled it out. Then the crew chief would fake getting busy and ignoring it so the passengers would start doing it while the flight crew kept up the gag. I’ve seen a lot of phone video of this little gag.

What most people think is turbulence is actually called chop. Turbulence has 4 official levels of severity: light, moderate, severe and extreme. Light turbulence makes people nervous, moderate turbulence spills drinks and makes women scream. The other two you'll hear about on the news because people get injured if they're not buckled - especially FAs. Pilots always remain buckled by regulation. But none of these will crash the plane unless it's inside a thunderstorm. That's why we don't penetrate thunderstorms.

commercial planes are tested with way more turbulences. But it can be really dangerous for passengers. Mostly injuries are just burns from hot drinks spilling and so on, but sometimes people just get launched against the ceiling. It is rare, but just recently we had 2 such incidents with many injuries and even 1 fatality. The damages to big planes are pretty minimal and since most strong turbulences are in higher altitudes even if you have issues with the aircraft you have a lot of time to recover.

That's not a heavy turbulence, not even moderate or constant chop or anything like that. They just got a little bump from a thermal, hot air rising, that makes you go up a little, that's it. That's typical every where but specially on the tropics, not sure where is that but it looks like an island on the Caribbean. That happens every day there over land, over water is less because water takes time to release the heat.

I remember one point in time. There was a story that my dad used to tell. The airplane that he was on was having such heavy bad turbulence that people were screaming and crying and my dad basically told my brother (5/6 years old) that every time the plane kind of droops that he should cheer because it's like a roller coaster. he started yelling out yay laughing and clapping. And eventually he got the rest of the passengers to mimic what my brother was doing. So then everyone was laughing and giggling along with this 5-year-old to help calm each other's nerves even though they knew that it could very well go really badly. Eventually the pilot got them out of the storm and out of the turbulence and got the plane on the ground but my dad was thanked by almost everyone on the plane including the flight attendants. Because he helps get the situation to relax inside the cabin.

I’m the Bass player of the “James Brown and the famous flames “ band. Before Mr. Brown died on Christmas Day of 2006, We flew Every day! Sometimes Twice a day! THIS IS SOMETHING YOU GET ACCUSTOMED TO. but the worst situation I ever remember was when we chartered a Metroliner , this is a medium size, twin engine, commuter airplane that holds approximately 30 people. We were going from Albuquerque New Mexico to San Francisco to do a seven day gig at the Fairmont hotel venetian room. At the airport that morning, all of our instruments and luggage were taken to the plane, and then we were standing up and getting ready to go on board and they told us they have a technical problem so we just hung out and smoked some really good purple haze that one of the fans gave us that night. When you are in a band like this. You’ll never have to buy weed! There’s some other things you never have to pay for either! I would love to go back to those days. Well anyway, they started up the engine on the right side and ran it up so high I thought it was gonna blow up, but soon we were good to board. James never traveled with the band, he had a brand new Rockwell jet commander! Custom interior with his initials everywhere embroidered and the upholstery and the curtains absolutely beautiful. We left Albuquerque and started being pancaked really hard. When you fly over these mountains, the sun beats down and hits the Earth and thermals start to rise, causing hard turbulence. All of us being stoned, it was really a hell of a scary deal. But we got up to a good altitude and then, as we were coming in over San Jose on a really stormy day, the turbulence going into SFO was mind blowing! I really thought the wings on that plane we’re going to snap off and the way you see these passengers in this video, just imagine us twice as bad some people hurt their necks and have trouble playing that night. One of our guys did some acid and was having the most fun of his entire young life. He was freaking out and laughing hysterically, pissing off the rest of us, but we finally landed and for some reason we thought that flight took many slow hours! It took about two hours!

This is pretty mild. Heavy turbulence isn’t just bumpy, it bumps like this constantly, then sends the plane into a 50 foot free fall like a roller coaster drop with your butt off the seat every minute or so. Then you can feel the plane catch air again and swoop back up squishing you back into your seat and making it hard to breathe from the G force until it levels. I’ve only been through it once and it was terrifying for about 30 minutes trying to land at Dallas ft worth during high winds. When the plane finally landed nobody said a word, everyone just quietly got off the plane looking like we all saw a ghost. I used to jump out of airplanes in the Army, been on planes and helicopters probably 200+ times. Never was afraid during any of it but now I get nervous to fly because I was genuinely questioning if we would survive.
