Dude stop! It's easy to say that now. Moore was better player than Randy. I saw them both. Randy was a "Better fit" in terms of personality. Because he had patience to deal with a drunken lucky fool who married into the Arden empire. However, in terms of ability? Gary Moore all day every day (jaw dropping shit). Ask Dana Strum. Even when Ozzy took Randy to England, he was still trying to get Moore. Either way it all worked out.

@@shawnstarks1743 Moore was a very typical "blues" based player..Rhoads approach was completly different...stuff that NOBODY was doing back then. Or since for that matter. Randy was thinking and playing on a whole different level. Thats why his stuff still shines to this day.

technically true, but Osbourne was def fed up with the direction they were going. The last few records were way over produced by Iommi, and Never Say Die was a train wreck...i mean Saxophones??, cmon. Half the stuff they were doing could not be played "live" Thats what Ozzy stressed to Randy when they first hooked up..that he wanted to still do good, hard rock but also to be more commercially "accessable"..and most of all, be able to do the songs "live". Iommi also had a very annoying thing that drove Ozzy crazy when they played LIVE.. Ozzy would announce the next song, and there would be at times over a minute of silence while Iommi bizzarely would start tuning his guitar. Drove Osbourne crazy and he couldn't get no "flow" going with the audience. I saw them 3 times in the 70's and it happened all 3 times. And weirdly, Iommi always wanted Ozzy to stand off to his left onstage, not in the center like all lead singers do. Also, they NEVER touched each other physically onstage. All very odd chemistry..

When I was 22 years old, Ozzy Osborne was coming to the Sam Houston Coliseum on February 17th (1982). Since first hearing Ozzy’s “Blizzard of Oz” solo album, his new guitar player Randy Rhoads had become my guitar hero. I didn't know much about him, nor did I even know what he looked like, because Ozzy's album pictures really didn't distinguish who was who in the band photo. To this point, I had assumed that the dark-haired guy (Rudy) was the guitar player I had recently come to idolize. Anyway, my girlfriend Mindy and our housemate Chris quickly found a way to score some tickets for the show. I figured if we showed up at the arena early enough, we might get a chance to meet the band before the show. It was a warm afternoon in Houston when Chris, Mindy and I arrived at the concert hall. We made our way around to the loading dock side of the building to look for tour buses or any other sign of band life. The road crew had already arrived and was setting up the elaborate stage for the “Diary of A Madman” tour. Surprisingly, the atmosphere was very relaxed. We were able to simply walk in and observe at our leisure without anyone hassling us. This went on for the better part of the afternoon. As we loitered about the premises, I befriended Randy’s guitar tech. He informed me that the band would be showing up around 5pm to do a soundcheck. In the meantime, he invited me into a makeshift dressing room to have a look at Randy’s guitars. They were sitting on guitar stands right in front of me. Just feet away from my hands were Randy’s signature cream Les Paul with the snakeskin strap, along with three custom made “V” shaped guitars. His polka-dot V, white pinstripe V and a black one, the latter two sporting the name “Jackson” on the headstocks. At this point, I was not really familiar with his guitars. And this was also long before Jackson Guitars became a household name. Needless to say, I was quite intrigued by them. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to bring a disposable camera with me. I asked the guitar tech if I could take a few pictures of the guitars. He didn’t mind, so I began to snap away. Just as I was photographing the assortment of guitars, a rather large and in charge road manager walked in on me and freaked out. “What the f#$k are you doing in here??? Gimme that efffing camera, those are custom made guitars!” he barked. The guitar tech tried to quell the big fellows concerns, but he would have no part in negotiating any compromise. “Gimme the effing camera if you wanna see the show” he demanded. As a 22 year old punk kid, I was in no position to argue, so I reluctantly gave the Paul Bunion looking troll my stupid camera. The guitar tech apologized for the road managers over-reaction and allowed us all to stay and hang out. Like clockwork, the tour bus pulled into the loading dock at 5pm. Tommy Aldridge, Rudy Sarzo and Randy Rhoads soon stepped out. Randy was wearing blue jeans, a black pleather jacket with no shirt under it with a white towel draped around his neck. Absent from the group was Ozzy, who apparently didn’t do soundcheck with the rest of the group. I quickly made my way over to who I thought was Randy and asked for an autograph. Slightly unprepared, I only had a small piece of paper that I had found nearby for them to sign. Rudy signed one side of the paper and Randy Rhoads signed the other side. I managed to make some small talk, at first thinking that Rudy was actually Randy. Up to this point, (As I said, I wasn’t entirely sure what Randy actually looked like). “Man, you’re a great guitar player” I said. Rudy looked at me sort of puzzled and pointed me in the direction of the actual Randy Rhoads. Needless to say, I felt like a douche. Randy was very unassuming, soft-spoken and frankly humble. He happily complied with my autograph request. He had to lean the small piece of paper onto the side of the cinder block wall in order to write his signature. He simply wrote, "Randy Rhoads". After several minutes, the band disappeared inside the arena and we followed along like lemmings. During their soundcheck, I stood directly in front of Randy Rhoads as the band ran through the song “Mr. Crowley” in its entirety. Randy was playing his cream Les Paul and never sounded better. I was in awe that afternoon, watching this soon to be legend warming up for the impending show right before my eyes. Except for my girlfriend Mindy, Chris and myself, (and a few road-crew guys), there was nobody else in the arena. A few short weeks later, Randy, twenty-five years old, was killed in a plane crash in Leesburg, Florida. I was davestated. His autograph remains framed on my studio wall to this day. Also, a few weeks earlier on March 5th, John Belushi died of a cocaine overdose. You could feel a chill in the psyche of the masses around Houston who had just absorbed the news of both of their untimely deaths. Both tragedies were a stark reminder of my own mortality....Can you imagine what would have been captured on my disposable camera had i been allowed to keep it??? Jeff Dyer - Uncle Sally

Legends 🙌 on guitar 🎸. The late Mick Ronson went to LA in 1982. He added handclaps to the song Jack and Diane by John Cougar. He was happy 😊 with that. Ronson went to Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦. He played with The Payola$ and recorded with Lisa Dalbello. Ronson was an unsung all-star 🌟. At 1 of the England concerts, a young English man watched Van Halen closely. A few years later, that same guy, who happens to be Andy Taylor, joined Duran Duran.

Mick Ronson was Randys main guy, and for some reason, thats hardly ever mentioned ....Randy literally looked just like Ronson on the Diary tour. The comments he made about other players in interviews, it was only when somebody asked him and he was being "polite"..the ol "hes really great at what he does". When Ronson did those Bowie records, he is just great, great and great. Rhoads loved his playing.

Yes officially Black Sabbath fired Ozzy Osbourne in 1979 but Osbourne had left the band in 1978 to start a solo project. So anyway looks like Ozzy didn't want to stay with Black Sabbath and wanted to start his own band. Especially when Black Sabbath failed touring with Van Halen.

This was a fantastic video. By the end of the recording of Diary of a Madman Randy Rhoads had truly developed his own style and was definitely all his own. I go back and listen to both records with Randy and it almost gets better even after 4 decades. We were truly blessed to grow up in an era that gave us both Randy Rhoads and Edward Van Halen. I remember reading a brief interview or an article with Randy's mom's quotes in it. She said Randy was really really impressed by EVH. I don't compare the two. I'm smart enough and more importantly grateful enough to just appreciate the amazing music both gave to the world to enjoy. Long live rock and roll!!!

Parts of this just aren't actually correct .Sharon might have went to LA and got Ozzy sober and back from the dead but she was not in charge of ozzys everyday affairs of putting a band together at that time her brother was David and even he didn't have as much to say as his father.it was his father that once ozzy came back to England told ozzy he thought he should keep the band a all British band which they did try several out but it was ozzy that said Randy was the guy and Arden said well ill get him over here . But while in LA auditioning guitar players with Dana Strum in a studio and the rehearsal hall Garry Moore had rented out and was letting Ozzy try out musicians .Sharon wasn't on those tours with Van Halen and Black Sabbath period .and she also wasn't around when they wrote Blizzard of Ozz and not there for the first part of their uk tour .she has always taken credit for things she wasn't even there for .Randy lived with Ozzy and Thelma his first wife during the very beginning and didn't really take over Ozzys tours and affairs till quite awhile after they had tours the uk .she might have actually came in around the time they went back in Ridge Farm to record Diary or shortly after .she has told stories of how much of a magical time it was in the studio during the writing and recording of Blizzard and she wasn't there at all period. I hear the talent, but Randy Rhoads just doesn’t move me. Gary Moore is phenomenal as well, but again I just hear it and it’s impressive, but emotionally it does nothing for me. EVH is different however. Especially those DLR records. That tone is second to none, and I love how when you hear Eddie, you never know where it’s going. I guess it’s his improvising that impresses me. That and the balls out attitude of his early playing that really made EVH special.

@@johnhagan582 Respectfully, I disagree with most all of your statements. I appreciate the way you made your argument. You obviously love your guy, just as much as I love mine. However, I have seen Randy live. It was in Dallas on the Diary of a Madman tour about a month or so before he died. Look, he was very good. I remember he was very fast and his playing had that classical tinge to it we’ve all come to know and admire. I also remember he was doing a whole lot of things that Eddie was known for doing too. I remember reading an interview with him about that and I know he didn’t like copying Eddie’s stuff, i.e. the tapping and divebombs and such so I give him props for admitting that at least. I don’t think he’s the greatest guitarist I’ve ever seen or heard. I don’t even think he’s the greatest player Ozzy ever had. Jake E Lee wins that imo. As to the “rock star look”, Randy looses that one too. He looked too small and effeminate for my tastes. Eddie always looked like a rockstar onstage. This wiry guy with a huge smile all while blowing smoke rings… now that’s cool! I think mostly though it comes down to tone for me. Randy’s tone just didn’t sound good to my ears. He used too much gain and it sounded way too shrill and thin for my tastes. IMO, Eddie’s tone was superior in every way. He used very little gain but still got that massive sound by pushing the power tubes to the point of almost melting. Ed’s tone was so ballsy, full, and harmonically rich. Specifically those first six albums because when Sammy joined, he started messing with his tone and it never sounded nearly as good to my ears again. And don’t be fooled, Eddie knew music theory as well as anyone. He was a classically trained pianist after all and there’s early interviews where he admits this. I think the biggest difference between the two, besides their tone was that Randy played within in the limits of music theory, and Eddie didn’t. He didn’t let the confines of “the rules” stifle his musical creativity and it’s why he is so revered as an innovator besides all the gear tinkering he’s known for. But at the end of the day it’s all about what moves you. I love players with bluesy roots, a huge dose of improvisation, nasty swinging rhythm playing with ballsy tone and hooky hard rock songs. This is all just me saying I disagree. Anyway, cheers!

I usually try to avoid these kind of debates but it's like comparing a Lamborghini to a Ferrari. All three had tremendous talent and I don't believe Gary went to the blues because he couldn't keep up in the shredding. It was his preference and he returned to his roots. If you listen to Gary's hard rock in songs such as Murder In The Skies with the long shred intro and The End Of The World, he can shred with the best of them. Michael Schenker said that Gary Moore was one of the best. You can't deny guys such as Gary, Stevie Ray Vaughan or Rory Gallagher who are blues based, aren't very talented and I'm not saying you are. I just don't think the more faster you play, the better you are. Let's just say all three are extremely talented and the guitar world lost three legendary guitarists. Btw, EVH is my all time favorite guitarist.

I had seen Sabbath at Cobo in 1975, and 1976 and both times the place was barely half full. I was a huge Sabbath fan and i can say, without a doubt, that Van Halen literally wiped the floor with Sabbath that night. It was really kind of sad and embarrassing. VH were amazing, their sound crystal clear, and Eddie just stood out. Sabbath comes on, and they were so loud and plodding...no energy, no nothing. Their sound and mix were just awful. It took about 15-30 seconds to even figure out what song they were playing, it was so garbled. Not even half way thru, people were leaving in droves. I knew then that Sabbaths days were numbered..as i said, i was a huge fan of theirs since about 1972, but painfully, that night, i realized that version of Sabbath were over. That was the 'NEVER SAY DIE tour, and that record was just awful. A liitle over 2 years later, all that changed...rest is history.

Right on the money. He sounds like a beginner.Terrible vibrato and dreadful technique. But he did write some good riffs for Ozzy.

Ive never understood how Randy Rhodes got such a great reputation he sounds unpolished raw and amateurish compared to Ed and those people who think Randy Rhoads is better than SRV or Gary Moore are just voicing their opinions like i am. When they mention Randys background as a teacher and schooled musician no nothing about what makes a guitarist riffs and songs popular. A great example of lousy barely any talent musicians i think of KISS one of the worst rock bands musically of all time. But ! KISS sold a ton of records and sells out large venues because “there is no accounting for taste or the lack of”

He wanted Gary Moore before he ever heard Randy Rhoads. But wanting Gary Moore and ending up with Randy Rhoads is like wanting Mila Kunis and ending up in bed with Blake Lively ,,an upgrade

Sharon Arden had NOTHING to do with any part of Randy Rhoads joing Ozzy. Zero. She was a secretary for her father at that time. The part about her calling Dana Strum is flat out absurd. All these years later, Strum and Tommy Aldridge have never lied and changed their stories about their time with Rhoads. All these others exxagerate or just flat out lie.
